Diesel Exhaust Filter Full… Dealership wants $2000 to fix it!!

  • About a month before we were to hit the road for summer travel, our check engine light came on with an error message “Exhaust Filter Full, Power Reduced, See Dealership”. I was not a happy camper to say the least. I called the dealership only to be told we needed to drop off the truck for a week… (they wouldn't even look at it for at least four days) and though they couldn’t give me a solid answer, they said it could cost between $1,500 to $4,000 to fix the problem.
    Funny enough, there really wasn’t that much information on line for a DIY solution. After weeks of research Dawn and I found a number of solutions including one that actually worked!
    The product below is what we ultimately used to fix the problem.

    It’s normal to leave vehicle. You have 2 options. Dealer removes filter and clean. It takes 2 days. Or delete. It’s normal maintenance. I own a semi and 2018 ram myself

    I have a 2021 Ram 3500 Limited Mega Cab with the HO motor. I have 37k miles on it and it has been error free. Since the second tank of fuel in the truck I've been running Hot Shot Secret fuel additive that is supposed to help with REGENS and the entire fuel/exhaust system. So far just by the results I would say it's working. I do pull a 32 foot travel trailer and a dump trailer that gets up to 14k pounds when loaded up. I put one or two doses in the truck depending on how long I will be on the road. I DO NOT idle the truck for more than 10 minutes at a time. The only time I let the truck idle for a decent amount of time is after a long pull where the turbo is working hard. I will let it idle for 10 minutes or so to let the turbo cool down before shutting off the truck. Short trips and and long idle times seem to kill the modern diesel unless it has been deleted. Thank you for the info on the fuel additive that can help in this kind of situation. Good luck!

    Thanks. You must check out the Banks Power video on the RAM air intake preheater tendency to drop a nut into your intake. Nasty result!! Banks has a cure!! Disclosure - I'm an Aussie and don't have a diesel!

    I called around to find where repair shops get their filters cleaned (repair shops don’t do it in house)
    I called the shop that does the cleaning. Took off my filter, easy, and they cooked it clean for $175.

    I’m shocked it went into regen after being in limp mode. Typically that requires a manual regen by the dealer. Unless you have a obd tool that can trigger the regen manually. Regular regens will only happen when traveling at highway speeds. Figure at least 30 miles per diesel tank fill up. Dealer should have explained that when you purchased. At least you get the dash indicator. First gen DPF systems didn’t give you an indicator so you never knew when it was happening or if it was working. Sometimes fuel mileage, smell, or extra heat would give you an indication.
    when my 2011 Chevy went to limp mode while towing our TT, that put me over the top. The DPF was doomed at that point.

    Clear Diesel (Power Service). Your AZ short drives are a problem. Double the dose if you think there is a problem

      I actually am planning on doing a double dose in a half a tank on my next travel day of about 200 miles.

    Thank you for your wonderful video. This is for you or anybody else using these products, be very clear in what additive you have, and which tank it goes into. The maintenance additive goes in the DEF Tank itself, but thank you for introducing me to this one that goes in the DIESEL tank. Boy can a mistake there be a costly mix up.

      One product is for the DPF and one is for the DEF system. It helps if you're familiar with it all (DPF/DEF/SCR, etc.) but even if you're not quite so, just know that the DEF system cleaner comes in a BLUE bottle with a smaller head on it, as most DEF tanks have a blue cap on it. The DPF cleaner comes in a black bottle. Always read the instructions before you use.
      I also always use a good diesel additive at every fill. I like HSS EDT because I can use just 2oz of product per 24g that I fill, and get a performance dose. Some additives work better than others, and some do more than others, do do your research, as well.

    The filter is called a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). It collects soot, and when enough soot is collected, an automatic REGEN starts. In REGEN mode, the soot does NOT get blown out, the soot gets BURNT and turns to ash. There is a guage on your dash that will indicate the % the DPF is plugged. I own a 2019 RAM with the Cummins. My REGEN procedures have kept my DPF clean. Once the DPF is full of ash (not soot), it must be removed and either replaced, or taken to an Authorized Dealer who will bake it in an oven to burn off all the ash. In Canada, it costs at least $650 to have the. DPF burned out

      Thanks for the clarification on burnt vs blown. Mine was indicating full and the fluid along with towing allowed the soot to be burnt off. I’m close to a month from having the problem and everything is running great. I will keep a closer eye on the gage from now on.

      So basically drop the exhaust, remove the particulate filter and just clean it out?

      Yes, but it requires an oven, and then water blown thru at high pressure to clean it out. I don't believe it can be done at home by a DIY'er ​@@wallheadkdir

    Another solution would’ve been to buy one of the tuners on the market and it would’ve allowed you to do forced regen cycle to clear the filter out for you. The tuners cost a good few shillings but still cheaper than what that dealership wanted.

    As a semi truck driver that has to deal with these def filters on the regular for years, do yourself a favor and dont fill your def from the pump at stations, buy the boxed DEF, its more expensive but better quality.
    Personally, I would just get an older truck, no def systems and and maintenance is easy to do yourself.

    Diesel pick-ups are doomed if used as a grocery getter (ie short trips). Diesels run best when they run hot (e.g. towing through the mountains). Here’s my understanding applicable to your situation. Modern diesels DPFs ( diesel particulate filter) trap soot. More idling results in more rapid accumulation of soot. Soot consists of mostly tar and some ash. Regen heats up your exhaust temp and adds ammonia water (DEF fluid) helps burn tar away in form of colorless gases and water. A small amount of ash remains in your filter😂. I understand semi-DPFs may need replacement after 250K-500K miles due to ash plugging filter. Truck may be wore out by then.
    How do I monitor performance? I monitor DPF usage and oil temps. My F350 oil temps run 20+F hotter when I tow @217F. When highway driving not towing, I run at 198F oil temp. Highway speeds without towing @198F is minimum, but not enough to really clean your filter as you noted. Thanks to late Bill Hewitt RIP, l run ArchOil 9500 whenever I add fuel. Good advice to new diesel owners.

      DEF has nothing to do with the DPF/Regen. DEF is used to reduce NOX emissions by converting NOX into nitrogen and water. It’s similar to a catalytic converter that converts hydrocarbons to water and CO2

    When my ecodiesel had the def full messagge just getting the truck to operatingg temp and holding the throttle to 2500rpms in park for 15mins it started regening.

    I've been driving rams with the cummins for 30 years and I'm done with them. The cummins is already very expensive to operate and maintain. With the cost of fuel averaging between .35 and as much as a dollar more than regular, oil changes and fuel filters average over $300 and then all the added fun with DEF, regen issues and clogged DPF's I'm over it. Getting rid of my 2022 with only 22K on her and switching back to gas. She's currently in the shop for yet another go at the DPF.

      My message was exhaust filter full, power reduced. See the dealer. This worked for me. I would suggest to try it and see if it corrects the issue first. It won’t hurt to try. If it doesn’t work then definitely see the dealer.

    Our truck has 100,000 miles, 95% of this is hwy driving while towing 10 to 20 thousand lbs. The DPF is still f….d. Manual regens, EGR cleaning, new air filters, oil, additives, etc, nothing works. All the dealer say is let’s replace the DPF and pray ($3,500). There’s something fundamentally wrong with this system which dodge doesn’t want to talk about

      I’m about to do this and the bottle of Rislone says to add to the DEF fluid tank NOT THE DIESEL FUEL TANK. IT could harm your motor if added to the fuel tank. Please read the bottle and make sure. Don’t want to see you ruin your engine.

      Edit: looks like they have another option which is what I got. It’s Rislone Diesel DEF&SCR EMISSIONS SYSTEM CLEANER. This particular product goes into the Def tank. My apologies for the confusion.

    The key is not to ever idle the truck. Try and idle no more that 1 hour a week, 4 hours a month, or 50 hours a year. Do this and you’ll be fine

      @@topgearshoppe5693you want to let the turbo cool off after every drive. You want the egt to be at 250 degrees or less

      That’s not the issue, the DPF and or sensors are defective and need to be replaced with revised components. When an emission issue is detected, the system goes through self testing to ensure it’s working correctly. It’s at this point the pending “reduced power” message is displayed. But, if the defective components are out of spec, the self testing continues and with it the count down to reduced power. So the correct fix is to have the defective components replaced, the replaced sensors reset and a service bay test conducted to confirm proper operation. I know because I’ve been there…
      Also, diesel fuel quality is greatly inconsistent due to its quality not mandated as tightly as gasoline. We can thank the EPA for that misery. Our only defense against poor quality fuel is a diesel fuel additive with lubricants and cetane number booster.

    Glad your on the road but dont kid yourself. No liquid magic potion from autozone exists to fix modern emision diesel engines. DPF, Cat converter and DEF aftertreatment issues are a constant repair job at our heavy duty diesel shop. Cummins, Duramax or Power Stroke, doesn't matter, all have problems. It is what it is. Use Stanadyn fuel treatment for the high pressure fuel pump health and watch idle time.

      If they only knew about all the soot on those valves , from these modern diesel's . New Government GSA trucks have all emissions deleted for diesel trucks they buy that is very telling
