  • Society of the Snow, the Netflix film directed by J. A. Bayona, should have been nominated for 'Best Picture' at this year's Academy Awards. It has been nominated for 'Best International Feature Film', but we all know that that category exists to keep foreign language films from clogging up the actual 'Best Film' category. Check out my review of this devastating movie to find out why it's an absolute must-see.

    I saw this the first day it was available on Netflix and can easily say it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. All of the performances by the young cast are so moving and real that you can’t help but be affected by all of them. Also the numerous cameos by actual survivors lets you know how involved they were in the making of this beautiful film. Some of the more noteworthy of those is Nando Parrado can be seen holding the door open in the airport for the actor portraying him,the man announcing the names of the survivors is Carlitos Paez who is now portraying his own father. Another is Roberto Canessa who is seen standing behind the young actor portraying him in the hospital at the end. This movie stays with you long after it ends.

    I finally saw Society of the Snow last night, I'd been dragging my heels a little with it as I knew it was going to be a tough watch. What an incredible movie though and such an unbelievable story. The final 30/40 minutes are amazing as well even though I knew the conclusion being familiar with the real events! I would be interested to watch Alive at some point as I never saw it. Brilliant review Bryan

      Alive is good. But if you're coming to it after this it's gonna seem like the student film version in comparison.

    I saw this when it premiered on Netflix, I liked it. Very tense in so many moments. The whole rescue scene is very emotional.

      I love how it was shot. Incredible filmmaking. They filmed it in the actual location where the plane went down. Bayona should have got a director nomination.

      @@jotade2098 I have seen both yeah. I reviewed The Orphanage just over a year ago. Great film! The Impossible is one I need to revisit. I remember thinking that Ewan Mcgregor gave an incredible performance but I wasn't sold on everyone else. That's why I'd like to give it another shot.

    Question Bryan: what are your fav movie composers these days?
    I have a loving of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Bear McReary is coming strong and Hans Zimmer made Inception so...
    My all time fav soundtrack is Rumble Fish by Stewart Copeland :)

    • @jotade2098
      @jotade2098 7 месяцев назад +1

      funny thing the first heard from Bear was this for a Black Mirror episode. fits like a glove there

    • @BryanLomax
      @BryanLomax  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hans Zimmer in number one for me. Saw him live last year and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. Reznor and Ross did an amazing score last year for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. It's severely overlooked, I think, because it was to an animated film that wasn't Disney or Pixar. Bear McReary is a special one for me. I'm a massive BSG fan and I got my wife to walk down the isle on our wedding day to 'Roslin and Adama' from season 2 of BSG. Beautiful piece of music!
      One of my favourites at the moment is Daniel Pemberton. Say what you want about Birds of Prey (personally, I love it) but his score for that film was excellent. Same with Across the Spiderverse. Incredibly diverse.
      Ludwig Göransson and Justin Hurwitz are up there for me too.
