    I live in the U.S. and we literally just have too much stuff in this country. I’m a minimalist and I recently switched a sleeping on a Japanese futon and tatami mat on the floor and I love it. My back feels so much better. Also, my dryer broke a couple months ago and so I’ve just been hang drying everything and my clothes look better. I think the bed and dryer will no longer be something I have. I enjoy your videos.

    I really love minimalism.
    Growing up from a very poor family, our stuffs at home are very few. Never had new clothes, bags, toys, gifts, tv, radio, shoes and so on. In the kitchen, only one pan and one pot, we have to really take care of them. The cooking spoon was made out of coconut shell and bamboo.
    Me and my siblings studied and worked hard so we could afford buying our own stuffs, at least the basics. In my case, i became a hoarder coz I already have the means to buy what I want.
    Now, I am working hard to eliminate my stuffs, i just wanna have the life I had before...very minimal on material things and not harming the environment.

      I hope this starts up again in neighborhoods. As a single mom, I started a group of like minded people where we shared large family sized groceries, especially produce; we had a toy library, books and DVD (ok, a while ago, lol), and when one rented a carpet cleaner for 24 hrs, we all used it. We had a "my time" schedule to share babysitting. it was awesome.

    i love how half of your motivation to be a minimalist is wanting to do things with the least amount of effort possible. most people would think the effort of folding your underwear is so small it doesn't matter, but for some people (and i'm included in that) every little effort counts, and i appreciate a lot of your tips for keeping even small efforts in mind.

    Interesting about magnesium 😮. The western way of life has had many people believing they need all these STUFF to be happy when it's quite the opposite. We need to rethink what our "needs" truly are... stuff only weigh us down and sqeezes the life out of us: think about how much you have to work to buy all these things you don't actually need 😶

    If you have long hair, just water might not be enough, but now, even mainstream brands like Garnier offer shampoo bars, they are pretty good, and light. Also, a bar of Marseille soap is good for washing dishes, for those if us who can't do without! It cuts grease really well. :-) And by the way, thank you for the tip about magnesium. People used to use oil for the hair in the ancient times. Not sure how well it works though. The idea is that you wash it with soap, and you oil it from time to time so that it's not dry and brittle.

    Those are good ideas! I am going to look into the Japanese towel. I switched to using a small towel instead of a big bath towel about five years ago because it was less bulky and it dries just as well. I got rid of my iron too and got a small steamer in case I need to take some wrinkles out of clothing. No ironing board and no heavy iron and takes up a lot less space! That was very interesting to see that magnesium works! I will look into that. And some of the things are actually not minimalist 😄 Yes, you don't have a standard towel, but you have something else instead isn't it? The Japanese towel we also have here for camping. Your videos have been inspired and refreshing to me. I think I have a tendency to over complicate life and get overwhelmed. What you’ve shown about your lifestyle are refreshingly simple and I’d like to replicate that, even if it’s just a little bit at a time.
    My wife wanted me to ask you how you deal with people gifting you unnecessary things you don’t need in polite ways? We are recently married and both of our families are always buying us stuff for when we get a house of our own. We appreciate them doing that but it’s too much. Because they are going out of their way to buy things for us we feel rude turning them away. Any recommendations?

    • @SamuraiMatcha
      @SamuraiMatcha  2 года назад +18

      It’s important to take the gifts from your friends because your friends care about you. You can decide use it or get rid of it. The purpose of presents is receiving and being thankful.

      @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 2 года назад +9

      Maybe make it known you don't need any more things. Nobody does. You can skip gifting most of the time to no awful outcome. I haven't done Christmas in many years. I didn't need to spend a lot of money. The kids didn't need to be spoiled and I didn't need to take things home.
      Nice gifts: a plant or a nice flower arrangement in say an ice cream glass. Soaps. Think small and personal. Things from Etsy. Like handmade items. Nice coffee or teas. Experiences, like massages or hairstyling.

    Distilled white vinegar is a great water softener for the laundry for cleaner clothes.

    Oh man, I wish I could find the Biwako Fukin somewhere but I can’t seem to find it anywhere to purchase over the internet which is very unfortunate. I’ve been looking for an alternative dishcloth to the nasty things that are used here (Germany) for ages and the fact that you don’t need to use any soap with it anymore is just so amazing!

    Wow, thank you for your video! I can say it`s another level of minimalism :D
    It`s eye opening
    And can you, please, answer for my question? Is your bamboo bike really durable? I`m from Russia and I afraid it can`t lives in this diverse climate more than 1-2 years.

    Man, you're inspiring! Thanks for your videos, I loved it. It seems I'll start a new life in the new future and I have a chance to question the necessity of the things that I used to use every day at home. You helped me a lot, thank you so much! :) The solution you find for the bed is lovely, I'll definitely get one. It functions also as a couch. So, the only things that I need on day 1, are the folding mattress and a desk to work. I was also questioning the vacuum cleaner and ta taam, you gave me the idea. :) No more wardrobes and much more. Lovely solutions.
    But don't you need a pillow? Are you comfortable without it? I'm always sleeping not on my back, but on my sides.

    I am from a very sunny area in Spain. We have no roofs, we have terraces in top of the houses so we can dry the clothes there. Now I live in UK where it rains and I still do not use a dryer.

    I love watching your videos. I compared myself with you while watching this video. I do not have TV either. I work in my garden planting fruits and vegetables, feed my geese , chicken and fish therefore I do not need to iron my clothes. I have many "Tenugui" and did not what to do with them, after watching your videos, now I know how to use them.
    For shampoo and soap, since I have planted many kinds of herbs, my friends asked me to make herbal oil soaps for them. Every time I learn about new herbs, I make soap and use them to make sure they are good for my customers. I also make herbal shampoo because one of my friends had lost a lot of her hair. After using the shampoo I made for her, her hair starts to grow again so shampoo from my point of view is a bit different.
    Anyway I have learned so much from you. Please keep on doing this great work. ขอบพระคุณค่ะ Big ❤️ from Thailand.

    My grandmother always hung her clothes up on a line outside to dry. I loved the smell and the crispiness of the fabric. Unfortunately, I cannot do that because of my severe allergies. I live in the US and in my area pollen covers everything in the spring. You come outside and cars are completely covered in yellow and green pollen dust. I often have to wear a mask in the spring to get to my car. Even if I didn’t have allergies, I wouldn’t want to be wearing clothes and using towels covered in pollen. You are fortunate that you don’t have to experience this where you live.

      Suggestion? Since they attract lots of bugs and dust, maybe use the library to save some "for later" on their website.
      They also have tons of things besides books. Dvds, cds, and downloadable media like movies. Books, magazines.
      I have the same issues. So, I designate a spine bookshelf for regular sized books, and just pick the ones I really like and am reading.
      If you give each one a chapter or two, you'll easily find the ones you like or don't. Then, that frees up time and space for things you really DO like.
      This is just me, but cockroaches eat the glue, as do silverfish. So, nothing should ever be sitting around unused. I knew someone who had that problem and it was just horrific.
      I do it, too, but I've done the above and the herd is gradually thinning. Bring the others to a charity thrift store marked FREE after they close, so they don't have so much they can't get through. Someone will grab things first. Jmo.

    i'm not a minimalist but i try to simplify and declutter as much as possible. i don't have a tv either or a trashcan bc i think they've become obsolete. i did however buy a little cleaning robot bc it helps keep the floors clean. otherwise i don't like buying new appliances or new tech.
