For those asking about how it would work if your service provider already has a router. You have 2 option, use this one only as an Access Point. In other words you will disable the wireless feature in the router for you service provider and make this one as Access Point only device (no Routing). Option 2 depends on whether you can disable Routing on the device provided by your service provider. If so, it will works more or less as a modem and the Asus will take care of everything else.
Your directions for positioning the antennas are incorrect. They don't "shoot" the signal out the tip, but rather in a "donut shape" around the shaft of the antenna.
Finally i can stream to the Chromecast without constant buffering or freezes. And download at full speed at the same time. Very happy with this router!
Outstanding review as usual. I was searching for a review on the RT-AC68U and stumbled across this one. The only thing keeping me from getting this one, is the lack of a USB 3.0 port. I intend to connect an external raid stack for a media server. This would be the perfect router for it, if not for the lack of USB 3.0. Btw, thanks for your reviews on cases, roms, and new tech. I've made a few "well-informed" decisions/purchases, based on those reviews! I only wish more people would be as thorough in their reviews, keeping an eye on the stuff that matters, instead of just glossing it over, and giving their opinion. Much appreciated!
Tim a small advice for speed testing, you need to select a server as far as possible as in different country you are at. That way you get realistic download and upload speeds. Speedtest.net automatically selects the closest to you which will give you huge speeds, once you select server from let's say China, then you might have slower speeds and by selecting servers all around the world you get the average performance speeds which will give you more realistic results
Thanks for the info.. My old router died this evening, so I'm comparison shopping., and this does seem to be a darn fine piece of equipment, especially for the money.
Nice video,i just got a NETGEAR Dual Band N Router last month.i am getting better range now when i'm upstairs. i will get AC Router but not right now because most stuff don't support AC
great job, Tim! I myself have the Asus RT-N56U, with Brighthouse Lightning. The thing is a beast. I get better wi-fi in my house than anywhere on the planet. Works great when downloading those big ROMS off of XDA!! ;)
I've been using this router for about 7 months. One went out already but Asus replaced it for me no questions asked. This thing reaches farther than any router I've ever used. Also I just read an article where net gear is suing them over this router. apparently they goosed up the gain on the antennas above the FCC limit to allow for further reach lol fine with me. shortly after the lawsuit they released new firmware and took all previous versions down. I still have the old firmware..
i wanna buy it but i already have linksys ea2700 and i only connect through wire for gaming, is this router going to give me any extra advantage over my existed linksys like lower latency timings over wire or not?
Sorry to say this, but the thing you said with the antennas pointing the general direction of where your device is, is completly wrong, thats not how those kinds of antennas work.
yeah its the gigabyte ethernet that make a huge diff....that way your getting max output in each channel and wireless...i switch mine a few weeks ago and getting same speeds ilike yours
I'm curious too about your ISP Modem speed and what "speed plan" you have through your ISP. Myself, I can only get 18MB/s from my ISP, so adding this router would do me no good at all. Great review, however !!
Jim C K Flaten That's correct, and it's why I added an Apple Airport Extreme to my ISP's router. I now get around 20 mbps for a connection rated at 18 mbps. Thanks for pointing that out.
Hi and thanks for your video, I am planning to get this router as well and wondering if wifi will drop when they are selecting dual band simultaneously
Do u still have ur sprint airave? If so how is it working with this new router if u have it connected. I was highly considering this one and now with ur review im hoovering over the amazon purchase button. Just was wondering if airave would take away from its performance.
The speed rating on a router is the maximum throughput of that device. It will not raise the maximum throughput of your Internet connection. EDIT: Unless your current router is a bottleneck, of course.
I am still having downloads that HANG....and then stop...I have the latest firmware and am on my 3rd new router from ASUS.....any ideas?? I have checked most of the settings and have heard many others complain about this download hanging as well......It does not help me to return the past 3 when they all 3 hang on my downloads.....
D. Shvan dude. Some of us aren’t that fortunate. Some of our apartments run contracts to where you can’t get anything other than 100mb without taxing you to hell in back with fees and shit to use their shit.
Aim the antennas where you are most?. I dont think you know how the radiowaves from the monopole antenna transmits. Its like a big donut, if you want to point the antennas you need a patch antenna instead.
I got the Asus RT-AC68u and when i do the test i get 33ms 12 mbps download and 0.80mbps upload which is not as good as yours can u telll me some settings to make it better and can you make your internet go through the one router and not two
Having trouble with my aicloud setup for internet access via away from home. How do i get my wan to actually show my isp ip address instead of the 192.168.1.X address. I have it connected to a modem/router provided by cable company with wifi disabled. Would i need to ask cable company to now provide me with just a modem version only?
i need your help =/ i cant connect my W7 computer and android tablet to my ASUS RT-AC66U router =( but my mac and android cellphone can connect to it i already tried everything is driving me crazy can u help me please??
Your W7, and tablet most likely only has support for wireless-N. While your newer Android, and Mac support wireless-AC. You'll need to get a adapter for your W7, most likely shit out of luck for your tablet, unless you buy a new one.
Truthfully if you have an internet package that is under 50mbps then u only need a quality N router. If you don't have an AC wireless adapter then the AC bandwidth on this router isn't utilized. So get a 802.11ac USB adapter and then connect your laptop or desktop to the AC bandwidth and Oh Happy Day!
+David Johnson Some people have more than one computer, media servers and whatnot and they transfer data between them, you know. Just because you don't need an AC router for your internet connection doesn't mean you don't need such a router.
wow man your lucky my internet speed is 5.63Mbps down 0.98Mbps up and my ISP Nemont says thats the fastest they can do i even upraded my RJ11 cable an also ethernet cable from cat5 to cat6A from the router to PS4 an it still sucks anyone know a fast DSL router that might help seems like even though i upgraded my wiring im still getting a bad bottleneck effect somehwhere now im thinking its just an outdated router after watchn this vid but i dont know of any good routers or if my IPS will support it
Any idea"s how to get the port forward to work behind the modem. I have the ports open in the router an can hit it locally but not outside of my network. I have the dynddns setup in router and it said its fine.

Dude doesn't know much, but he got the spirit xD
Finally i can stream to the Chromecast without constant buffering or freezes. And download at full speed at the same time. Very happy with this router!
I was going to get this router but I'm going to wait another year. Asus' products are awesome for the most part.
I bought this same router in march...this router has not let me down.
Outstanding review as usual. I was searching for a review on the RT-AC68U and stumbled across this one. The only thing keeping me from getting this one, is the lack of a USB 3.0 port. Thanks for the review. Definitely buying this despite it being 3 years old.
Still a solid router!
have this router, upgraded my laptop's wireless card, connection speed of 900 Mb/s, internet speed is maxed. I love asus
Tim a small advice for speed testing, you need to select a server as far as possible as in different country you are at. That way you get realistic download and upload speeds.

Good review. I ordered mine off Amazon today. Can't wait.
Full setup can be done via a tablet or phone. I'm pretty sure I've done upgrades from my tablet too but I understand not suggesting that to people.
Nice video,i just got a NETGEAR Dual Band N Router last month.i am getting better range now when i'm upstairs. i will get AC Router but not right now because most stuff don't support AC
Hey Tim, what's you internet connection speed? I mean what your ISP has promised?
My phone guy is now doing Router reviews... wow, awesome!!! you taught me how to hack my phone dude!!! WOW!!!
great job, Tim! I myself have the Asus RT-N56U, with Brighthouse Lightning. The thing is a beast. I get better wi-fi in my house than anywhere on the planet. Works great when downloading those big ROMS off of XDA!! ;)
The best ...is docsis 3 modem work with this router you will get better internet for sure ... Nice vid I use this method work really good at my house
Great review man
Was wondering what the benefits are of having a Modem|Router as opposed to a separate Modem and Router?
cheers
Awesome review Tim, may get one of these!! My modem already has built in wireless though, will that cause issues running both?
I've been using this router for about 7 months. One went out already but Asus replaced it for me no questions asked. This thing reaches farther than any router I've ever used. Also I just read an article where net gear is suing them over this router. apparently they goosed up the gain on the antennas above the FCC limit to allow for further reach lol fine with me. shortly after the lawsuit they released new firmware and took all previous versions down. Another Great Video Tim !! I was already going to purchase this router...you just reconfirmed this being a great router.
great review!
router kind "old" is it still suitable handle 2016 demanding softwares??
I still have no issues with mine! Switch off between using this one and the Google OnHub, review here: ruclips.net/video/QksjxjRDyrk/видео.html
What it's covarage ranges
Nice review!!! Do you know if it can work as bridge-mode?
I have 100mb/s internet, but only get 45mb/s, because there is 9 wifi devices and 1 ethernet device at any time. Will this deliver on speed?
And please answer quickly.
*ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router sale 51,98%*>>>amzn.to/1pytQJi
I have 130 mb/s and I have 17 devices connected over a bridged router. I get around 70mb/s over wifi and 100mb/s wired
jps7878 Jesus that's a lot of bandwith hogs! I guess anything over what I'm getting now is a huge improvement.
My only question is the "RANGE".... how far can you go before it isn't effective...?
i wanna buy it but i already have linksys ea2700 and i only connect through wire for gaming, is this router going to give me any extra advantage over my existed linksys like lower latency timings over wire or not?
Sorry to say this, but the thing you said with the antennas pointing the general direction of where your device is, is completly wrong, thats not how those kinds of antennas work.
Tim you do realize that you HTC ONE, GS4, and Galaxy Note 3 all have WIFI AC support right?
yeah its the gigabyte ethernet that make a huge diff....that way your getting max output in each channel and wireless...i switch mine a few weeks ago and getting same speeds ilike yours
Price similar to N900 (450mb+450mb) from Netgear, what's the difference between AC and N series? Which is more future proof to buy?
Do a speed test comparison on one of those phones on WIFI AC
I'm curious too about your ISP Modem speed and what "speed plan" you have through your ISP. Myself, I can only get 18MB/s from my ISP, so adding this router would do me no good at all. Great review, however !!
That's not necessarily true. It could be more stable, allow more concurrent connections, have more features, and increase the bandwidth of your LAN.
Jim C K Flaten
That's correct, and it's why I added an Apple Airport Extreme to my ISP's router. I now get around 20 mbps for a connection rated at 18 mbps. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for the info Tim...but you forgot to mention price... Lol but it's no big deal I could just google that info thanks once again
I have a question- Why do two routers each show different speeds? Does it mean better router = faster internet speed?
The speed rating on a router is the maximum throughput of that device. It will not raise the maximum throughput of your Internet connection.
EDIT: Unless your current router is a bottleneck, of course.
because the wireless signal was weak on the old router.
Quick question, what port did you put the ethernet in from your main router?
Cool, thanks for the reply! I guessed as much, need to get a normal modem then a decent router. Not the one that came with my ADSL provider :)
What firmware your using I'm going to buy this router today
Should I get one
nice router and you're good looking as well but the room u did a majority of the review in had an annoying echo D:
DaFriar sez: Great video review....2 thumbs up !
WPS is an option that makes hacking your router password easier. hahahaha
is Great, I would like buy this router, but how many Watt uses this router ASUS RT-AC68U?
What if you don't have a laptop or computer to hook up to?
How do i set up this router without an ethernet port? My macbook pro has no ethernet port. Can i set it up wirelessly? Thank you
I'm assuming that this router does not support ADSL? or Broadband?
can i use this one with my 100/100mbit internet?
I'd be careful, it can explode.
dont make us laugh with that kind of speed
D. Shvan dude. Some of us aren’t that fortunate. Some of our apartments run contracts to where you can’t get anything other than 100mb without taxing you to hell in back with fees and shit to use their shit.
Stay strong brother! Dont never give up!
WRONG! At 08:49 Tim states that to access router within a browser type 198.162.1.1. Try 192.168.1.1 instead.
if the modem is not set up but you connect the asus router to modem it will work or not
Aim the antennas where you are most?. I dont think you know how the radiowaves from the monopole antenna transmits. Its like a big donut, if you want to point the antennas you need a patch antenna instead.
I understand that this router is being replaced by the AC68U.
Is the AC68 1900AC worth it? Or Netgear's Nighthawk?
The AC68 was said to be the fastest(Commercial/For House) wifi router, i dont know if there is another better now
Good stuff. Thanks Tim.
What was your old router?
I'm envious of your download speeds :P
Lets get some DD-WRT on this bad boy ...... Yaa-Yeeaa!!!
my 5ghz speeds are slower than 2.4 at the same distance... I'm about 15 feet away from the router.
what modem are you using ???
Great video! And great router ;)
Is this review on the Asus RT ac66u
Because the box says ac1750
I got the Asus RT-AC68u and when i do the test i get 33ms 12 mbps download and 0.80mbps upload
which is not as good as yours
can u telll me some settings to make it better and can you make your internet go through the one router and not two
Its your connection thats affecting your speeds. You wasted your money buying a router like this, since your internet is the bottleneck.
Problem is that some ISP's only work on the 2.4Ghz network not the 5Ghz like TWC
Good video. To much White though. Wear a colored shirt next time. Better contrast
what is your router now?
+Skyethur Still using this one!
+Tim Schofield (Qbking77) did you upgrade the antennas atleast?
Do you have an AC network card in your laptop, or is it just N?
were did you buy it please reply.
Mine was missing the router stand and I cannot find one
What internet provider do you use?
i need your help =/ i cant connect my W7 computer and android tablet to my ASUS RT-AC66U router =( but my mac and android cellphone can connect to it i already tried everything is driving me crazy can u help me please??

***** I fit this category, I get max 40mbps with Ethernet but wireless around the house is poor what router would you recommend?
Any of the Netgear Nighthawk series would be my top choice
+David Johnson Some people have more than one computer, media servers and whatnot and they transfer data between them, you know. Just because you don't need an AC router for your internet connection doesn't mean you don't need such a router.

Hehe... I have 1 Gbps down/ 200 Mbps up and I'm using Asus RT-N18u
im geting the new model that just came out the ac68u
Does it support any router
Awesome Review
Good review thanks
processor speed of this router??
Sold!!
Hi how are you??
Any idea"s how to get the port forward to work behind the modem. I have the ports open in the router an can hit it locally but not outside of my network. I have the dynddns setup in router and it said its fine.
how can that be when i bought a 25ft cable it cost me more than that
most people i know call WPS wireless point search
It's not a waste of money to buy a router like this just because your internet speeds aren't anywhere near what the wireless is capable.
And isn't the ASUS AC68U better?
What is the step with the network key ? What is a network key ?
anthony nunez yes
how is 5ghz coverage?
Cool router!
One job RUclips.....
Kidding, just give it a little time for YT to process the vid and I'm sure it will work soon!
I'm still getting 6 mb/s download. Anyone know how to fix it
why won't my 5ghz ssid show up on my connection list?
Your laptop might not support 5Ghz Bands.
Getting this for my son and our school room (both upstairs)
He puts the price in at 0:39 its $189.99
I returned this router because it was just not worth the hype. My Asus RT-N66U performs just as well if not better.
aperantly with this router you can set it up with wireless
i would never use a cable of that length
why peoples buy gigabite router if they have max 100 Mbts contract , i get more speed with n class router with 200 Mbts contract , buy a nother antena
gabriel me Advertised speed does not equal real world speed.
