one big factor i bought this is i am so mad with my old router when im mowing my 1acre lawn! this router solves my problem. 17 wireless devices connected simultaneously and no buffer on all. i fire up plex (1080p maximized rate) on my note pro 12.2 and it plays instantly! my server is mac mini. i have 2 story house and the router is just placed in the basement. unbelievable router!
I too have the same router had it for over two + years now and it works great. I started off with the defualt antennas but upgraded to three high gain antennas that work even better for longer range of both the 2.4 GHZ range and the 5 GHZ range. I even used an ASUS AC dual band repeator and now with the latest firmware updates I dont need to use that any more on the 5 GHZ side, for the upstairs of the house, down stairs the 5 GHS drops some, so I set up the mini ASUS router as a stand alone 5 GHZ third network. all use the same SSID with numbers 1 2 and 3 in section so for example, 2.4 is network one, network 2 is the main 5 GHZ and network 3 is the mini ASUS sending out 5 GHZ downstairs. We too use the ASUS usb adapters and they work great.
I have a large house so i just bought a range extender. Your router wont boost the distance if its in the same spot as all that other clutter. It did boost performance since ur laptop at least connects.
What kind of cable modem do you have? Looks like a SB6121. Channel bonding is part of the improvement in speed and having sustainable speed with multiple HD videos and netflix and other things going on. Also I would recommend changing your channels on your router to another channel like 9,10,11 to lessen the interference that other routers that are around you giving off interference. Also you can load a third party firmware on that router.
10:41 Your laptop most likely has dual-band wireless N. As a fellow owner of the AC66U, I can tell you that the router is prone to switching to WiFi-g if it does not recognize the device. You must switch the "Wireless Mode" setting to N-only and change the channel bandwidth to 40Mhz for optimal results, unless of course you require compatibility to older devices (like pre-2008 computers). I am not to sure if they fixed this issue in a newer update, but the router always seems to have issues reading computers NetBIOS settings and only gives a computer WiFi-g connection. Just a tip.
Talk about strange coincidences--I just replaced my DIR-655 with this same router for the same exact reason! Huge issues connecting to the tablet I'm typing this on when I'm out on the balcony 40 odd feet from the router. And the Wifi extender I bought is a POS. So far this router rocks. Of course I haven't pushed it yet, but at least I'm not dropping signal on the balcony anymore!
You need a proper client to utilize the associated router. Most modern adapters are not shipped with AC capable wifi devices. The first two smartphones to use it are the SGS4 and the HTC One - some 2013 q3 laptops include wireless AC, and some custom builds will include the option. It is unlikely that pre-built desktops will have AC installed in them.
can i suggest a cool tip: these routers, even with heatsinks, get hot, and generally after a few months they may start to burn out. it also depends on the climate where you live and the season etc.. anyways, get a cheap laptop cooler from amazon or newegg or whatever, should be around 15- 30$ and plug the usb power cord into the router to supply power to the fan(s). now place the router on top of this. it def works and keeps your router well cool.
Sounds like you'll have a great setup! When you call your ISP (In my case I have Charter Communications) you will need to give them the MAC Address of your new Motorola modem. Once they register the MAC Address and provision the modem for your speed tier, everything should work just fine. Note that some ISP's do not allow customer owned cable modems especially if you are a new customer. Once your cable modem is setup then all you have to do is setup your new wifi router :)
Nice review. Would have been nice to see your throughput test results with the old router so we could see the difference ourselves firsthand. I mean with everything running and all. But overall good review.. Thanks
Here in KY, lovely Windstream runs the show. In my area they have no competition and has been oversold since 2011, refusing to upgrade their equipment. So my daily speeds are usually less than 0.50mbps while paying for 3.0mbps around $60 monthly. I have to wait until almost 2am to use the internet. During the day, cannot watch RUclips at 144p without buffering every 15 seconds.
It is the same. You must have purchased your router from BestBuy. For some reason their router has the 'R' instead of the 'U' but they are exactly the same.
Get a bigger antenna. I scanned all the network near by and used the channel which was least used. By putting a new antenna, the reception remained the same but rate of transmission increased by almost two folds. Also, I put a aluminum foil behind the antenna and it was just a trial and see what happens. It also actually increased the transmission rate slightly. From 145 to 169!!!!!!
omg ty so much for telling us you had problems with it and your wii. i got a wii too and i thought it was because i had moded mine that made the wifi mess up some how but if you are having problems too it must be all wiis. anyway i had mine hooked up for like 2 months now and i tried everything to make it work good with the wii but no setting or feature enabled or disabled or security thing made a difference. the way i made it work was by hooking up a middle router.
your network speed might be related to your hdd also note the channel you transmit on in regards to chatter from 3rd party networks as that will bring down your wifi network speed..
Thank you, this is exactly what i needed. I have the same router dir-655 and same problems you are having streaming netflix to the wii gets slow and pixelated and re-buffers often. i was concidering this same asus router, i was just not sure if it was a router problem or a problem with the wii i ran speed test with the same software you mentioned and it should be fast enough throughput wise. i have loved my dlink for many years but i guess it is time for it to go. thank you
btw you can adjust the signal stregnth in the dlink dir-655 also. i would have liked to see you test the dlink with that asus wifi adapter also to compare, and see if the dlink is capable of more throughput with a better wifi card. are you still happy with your asus router? now if i can find a review of the bestbuy asus rt-ac66r vs the ac66u to make sure it is exactly the same. i think the r is for retail, so they dont have to pricematch.
Although the specs and speed of wifi AC are nice, I can't imagine too many real-world uses for AC where I would actual notice any benefit or difference. I already have lightning fast Wifi N for all my daily laptop and phone uses which are mainly web pages, internet downloads and streaming of audio and video. I have no buffering issues with Netflix movie viewing over N. Plus you are limited by the bandwidth of the broadband pipe anyway. The real noticeable benefit of AC is in file transfers. But that's only good if you're within the 20 foot range.
First off, Your comment is definitely not spam. Second, File transfer are still WAY higher speed at range than wireless N900. I have a notebook with a Dual-Band AC card in it and yes it is faster when you are close to it, but it only drops about 100MBs in speed at longer ranges, rather than N which would plummet to half its bandwidth at range, which is all thanks to Beam-Forming.
Rubensteezy I've since put an ac card in the notebook and have a NETGEAR ac1250 router. I've changed my thinking and now hope ac becomes part of all WiFi enabled devices in the future. Even though the card's max output is 867mbps, that's plenty fast enough. The real world transfer speeds I've seen are about 300 to 500 mbps.
On the another hand, It will heat up your laptop when multiple tabs open, your battery life will shrink to half and eventually your laptop fan will just burn out. Keep enjoying chrome until this happen.
don't crank the mw past 108. 108 was the highest before it would start creating errors. More is nice but more errors will negate the benefit. Actually I wouldn't take it past 90 mw if you plan to keep the router for awhile. More heat means a quicker death.
Hi. I saw you didn't have bigger speed with this router due to distance. 802.11ac standard runs on 5GHz, does your laptop support 5GHz frequencies? I can't see the model of your laptop so I can't check but if your laptop does not support 5GHz than it will run on 2.4GHz so not much different than you had before.
EpicReviewsTech Just curious, why do you have such a beefy router if your laptop only supports one band? I don't mean it in a mean way, but don't you think if your laptop only does one band, it might be time to upgrade?
Well, I'm sitting here feeling ill looking at my RT-AC68U router and new Moto Surfboard 6141 modem. Why? because I don't know what to do. I guess I have to call my ISP :( and tell them I'm replacing their equipment but, then what? Do I simply connect everything and voila, it works?
Having the same disconnects with my daughters wii have you figured out the problem? also how your range mine doesn't seem to be to impressive but I think it because my devices are holding on to the 5 ghz band and it's know to have poor range.
how do i delete files from the hd? it sais "You need permission to perform this action" these are files downloaded using utorrent. How do i set up permission so i can delete them whenever i want to???
i need to do a project like this as im on fiber optic internet 100mbs down 25 upload and 6ms ping great for gaming and streaming no l;ag but when i do speedtests i get 56-9 down and 10 up 15ms ping so im only getting like half what im paying for needs a new network hasent been touched since 2011

I'm in Canada, And my internet is said 100 down and 5 up with a ping of 9ms. When I run a speed test, I get 110 down and 5.7up. And thats on Coaxial!
Not bad were only on fiber optic as it was like £5 extra and got like 40mbs more than previous package also came with a new router which by the way is shite (SuperHub 1)

how does it do with length ? i need a router that could cover large spaces. im in the last room in my house and get no wifi because the router i have doesnt reach.
I have this router and can get through floors and walls just fine. My friend who lived at the other of our 14 unit townhome building (I had one end he had the other) could pick up my signal and surf the web, no gaming though. That was shooting through about 20-30 walls into a wireless N usb dongle. Open air I could pick my network up about 2 blocks away from my house. Netgear sued Asus over this router because the firmware allows it to put out too many watts for transmit power.
Alex King netgear wouldnt sue asus over output wattage. thats an fcc issue. this is also why the gooberment demands digital broadcast because it happens at lower wattage than analog. however, these routers are nice. i run one. range is excellent. if you have a range issue move the router. not far. couple feet, turn it 60 degrees etc. deadbands are weird. you could have a piece of artwork acting as a faraday cage of sorts. u just never know without surveying the site. the gear however is very nice, unless u got a lemon.

Old people don't know about technology that's why if he was smart he wouldn't have bought in the router that routers only doing him one good thing giving him better wi-fi that's what that routers meant to do his wired connection is in no faster as he plainly could see was pretty pissed off about but didn't show it but him going downstairs using his Wi-Fi I bet you his signal was twice as fast as compared to the old router
Asus scammed all of you guys with the price. I already tested this router and believe it or not. It is not so good enough for this price. Anyway, u will discover it by yourself.
So two years after this (2013) you're bragging that you already tested it in 2015 eh? So have millions. As for price, this was when the router was released.

which one is better the ASUS RT-AC66U or the ASUS RT-N66U?
ac ofc
AC..... 3x faster than N. And can still do 600N on a single frequency.
I have a ps4 and I got 4 sister using wifi will the router automatically pick which band or do I have to do it myself?
it'll automatically pick up witch band you're on but make sure you have both bands running on you're router or you'll run into problems like constant disconnection
