I read We Used To Live Here and The Gathering this month and loved them. I still can’t get The Old House out of my head 😂 My 5🌟 reads in October were The Ashes and the Star Cursed King and Bloom ❤

I also loved Bloom and DESPISED IWOHFAM this year. I think my arc review is the top review on GR for it rn but like man, how did it suck so hard?
It's definitely in contention for my worst book of the year.

What a great reading month! I think my best read of the month was Rest Stop by Nat Cassidy - love a horror novella! I was on the fence about Dinner for Vampires, I love memoirs about cults, but have never seen an episode of One Tree Hill. Sounds like maybe I would enjoy it anyway?

I definitely want to read Rest Stop! It seems so interesting.
I think if you are at all interested in cults, Dinner for Vampires could be really interesting. Orrrrr you can binge a season of One Tree Hill and then read it hehehe 😁

It's been disappointing forme, I tried the angels of elysium and it was 2 DNFs and a 3 star, the red palace was better but the best part of it was researching about the actual prince the book was based off of. I liked invocations but that was early in Oct.

Wow! You had such a good reading month, but I am sooooo bummed you didn't like Blood Guard because my copy is coming from BotM! I feel like I need to contact them and tell them get it out of my box! Oh well.
I actually got through quite a bit this month.
First I finished Silver in the Bone and I was floored by how much I enjoyed it. I gave it a 4.5 and I can't wait to read the sequel.
Next was If I Have to be Haunted. This was a highly anticipated read for me and it fell a bit flat. I still enjoyed it and gave it 3.5, but it just wasn't quite what I was wanting out of it.
Next was The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. It was super cute, cozy and light and I gave it a 4, but my brain just couldn't stop comparing it to The House in the Cerulean Sea and if these two were in a fight, Witches would lose. Every time. Cerulean had me weeping by the end and it will forever live in my heart. Witches was good, but did not have the same impact.
Then The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires. Dear Lord was this a RIDE. This was my first Grady Hendrix book and now I see why people tote his books so hard. It was good and made me go through all the emotions and took me through twists and turns I was not expecting.
My final book of the mo th, finished on Halloween was Every Heart A Doorway. I wanted to finally dip my toes in the Home for Wayward Children series and I'm so glad I did. This was a solid 4 for me and the co kept and execution was brilliant and I can't wait to continue.
It wasn't all great though. I did have 3 DNF's. The first one absolutely KILLS me. It was Court of Wanderers, sequel to Silver Under Nightfall. The 1st was a 5 star and one of my top 3 fav reads of 2023, so I was so happy to finally get to the sequel. I got through 50% and was devastated by how boring and lackluster it was compared to the 1st and I just couldn't slog through the second half. Silver Under Nightfall will be considered an excellent standalone for me.
Then we had The Hurricane Wars. It was so hevy in the info-dumping the 50 pages I read felt like 150. The last was Tempest of Tea. I don't think I need to say more on that.
Oct was a great month and let's hope the last 2 months of the year follow suit!

A lot of people have been LOVING Bloodguard so definitely give it a shot still if you're getting it. I just didn't vibe with it personally.
Grady Hendrix literally writes either a 5 star book or a 1 star book. There is no middle ground 🤣
You literally read so much! I'm so impressed and this also makes me even more nervous to try The Hurricane Wars 😆

Novemeber TBR, I have a few ARCs. I FINALLY read a Jay Kristoff book. It was different than I had imagined. I see him post on IG a lot with negative comments like some do for good reviews as a gag which is hilarious. I'm not sure that the comments were meant for the book I read specifically (Empire of the Vampire) if so, from what I recall they wouldn't fit? Yes, there were some kind of spicy scenes but they were nothing like others I've read. It seemed more plot heavy to the MMCs mission to help save people and stop the Vampire King, and the half vampire's story kind of reminds me like An Interview with the Vampire setting? I dunno, it was good. Just a long steady recollection of the MMCs journey to date with the vampire who is interviewing him.
Then I read The Temptation of Magic. I got the Litjoy edition through Too Bee Read but listened to it and I really liked it. Different magical beings, kind of a similar set up with people in power who are secret scumbags and they are trying to figure out how to stop them vibes. I was here for it. I am going to read We Used to Live Here at some point this month and then I can watch your video on it to compare thoughts. That might not be until later in the month though. We will see. I just need to stop choosing ARCs that are not the first in a series that I have not read yet and maybe it will not screw up my reading month 🥴 I didn't pay attention last month when choosing books on Netgalley. I like to try and go in a little blind which is how I got myself into that issue. Oh well. 🤣

I absolutely loved Empire of the Vampire. It was my second fav book last year haha. The comments on his IG are so funny. I'm addicted to his social media. It's kind of a mix of negative comments about EoTV and Nevernight.
I have Temptation of Magic but I havent read it yet, so that's good to hear it was a good read.
I literally had to stay off NetGalley because I got myself in trouble like you and kept getting too many books 🤣🤣

Sorry to hear you didn't like Bloodguard. Borrowed it through KU and am about halfway through. So far I'm really liking it. I'm really liking the political aspects of it and personally don't mind the relationship, but everyone is different.
I've been meaning to check out The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. Was iffish on it but still curious. Might still borrow it from the library if I get curious enough, but what you said about not much happening is kind of what I was worrying about.
IDK if you've read it yet, but Can't Spell Treason Without Tea is a cozy fantasy I really liked. It's about this assassin for an evil queen and a mage who decide to run off together to open a book store/tea shop. There's a little bit of a mystery in the town, so a bit higher stakes than something like Legends and Lattes, but still very sweet.

That's awesome that you're liking Bloodguard! It's definitely going to be one that will polarize people.
I would def try out Amina from the library because it's gotten very mixed reviews from people I've talked to. Hopefully you end up liking it.
I have Can't Spell Treason! I'm pretty excited to read it but I'm very hit or miss with cozy fantasy.
