    Children's books have always held a special place in my heart. I loved them as a child and also loved reading them with my children. I still enjoy sharing certain ones with my daughter and one day when I have grand children I will enjoy sharing with them too. A good illustrator is so very important to the stories. Their visual talent draws you in and sets the tone. You are more than a good illustrator. You really capture essence the time, place and characters and bring the story to life. Long live holding a tangible book and art in our hands! Nothing else is quite like it.

      aw thanks so much Mary for your wonderful comment, I really appreciate it! ☺ I agree, children's books are just magical things - their memories always stay with us even when we're adults. I kept a lot of the books I read as a child, and there's something so comforting about holding a book which once captured my imagination 💕🥰

    Oh wow!!! My degree is in graphic design, albeit from the dark ages of drafting tables and T-squares and such...and this brought me right back to the day that the Chair of the Art Department and I were walking across the quad, and he declared, "I hear the future is going to be in computer graphics!" And I asked, "What does that mean?" Then he leaned down and whispered "I don't know.".....
    Of course it's taken many years for the technology to be able to do what you just did, (My first experiences with computers meant I needed to do coding just to get into it. Ewww!)
    This is pretty awesome stuff! ❤❤❤

    • @rachelcorcoranillustration
      @rachelcorcoranillustration  Месяц назад +3

      Thank you for sharing your insight! I am so glad I never had to do coding! 😅 Even though I now use digital media, I had always been scared of computers before that! I'm so glad the iPad and other drawing tablets exist, because this way of drawing really suits my 'quirks' as I can have a hard time procrastinating over colours and colour changes - that's my main gripe when it comes to traditional media 🙃 I agree, the computer is an aid, and I just view it as a modern day art media. However, as you said it can't mask bad draughtsmanship or lack of artistic/creative ability, just like any creative medium really 🙌

      thanks so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed my video! No not at all, you really don't have to be a digital artist to be a book illustrator, or any kind of illustrator. There's many professional illustrators out there who work traditionally, and their publisher's designers layout their work for digital printing. If you prefer not to work digitally, it should definitely not stop you from pursuing your ambitions 🙌☺

    • @rachelcorcoranillustration

      aw thanks so much, so happy to hear that! 🥰 I keep the title lettering on a separate layer, and in Photoshop I change the colour to 100% black as this is the 'colour' that the foil transfers to. I then send a layered PSD file to the publisher 🙌🌟

    As a longtime reader, I feel like we're at a Golden Age of book illustration and covers. If you look at some of the graphics of the 80s and 90s, it's so cheesy and horrible. Publishers now appreciate beautifully done cover art, not just in children's book but in lot of genre. Like Isabel Canas's cover for Vampire of El Norte is a work of art. These covers make you want to pick it up.
