  • Did you happen to know? There are four species of giraffes: Masai, Reticulated, Northern, and Southern. Each giraffe boasts a unique coat pattern, with no two giraffes having identical markings. These majestic creatures display a fascinating diversity in their patchwork coats, varying based on their species.
My first painting of Giraffes turned out to be a fun experience. Like the stripes of Zebras, the square patterns on Giraffes sealed the deal, painting those instantly made them look like what they are. While painting these intricate details was captivating, I realized in hindsight that leaving more white spaces in areas bathed in light could have added a touch of drama. However, in Watercolor, there's no turning back once the paint sets!

I like your background. It doesn't distract from the subject because you left it soft, like gentle clouds. I also like the left giraffe best. He's watching the viewer.
Coincidentally, I also painted my first giraffe last week. I did overwork mine though, and turned the shadow on the face a bit muddy. It's so hard to know when to stop. Your's are amazing, as always.

@CathyPowellGlass Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! I'm glad the background worked well and isn't distracting :) . The left giraffe is clearly the stand out & wish i had planned the other two better.
It's wonderful to hear that you've also painted a giraffe-wish i could see it and I'm sure your painting is fantastic in its own right! Learning when to stop can indeed be challenging, i had to be very conscious too. Last week, wanted to try something new & tried a scene with trees & houses, i overworked the trees to an extend where i would have torn the paper, if i kept going any further :D (will never publish that). So don't be hard on yourself.
Your kind words mean a lot to me, Keep painting and enjoying the process! 🎨🦒😊
