  • Chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, seemed too good to be true when they were first created, and before long astronomers studying Venus' atmosphere discovered what could go wrong with this "miracle molecule."

    It's easy to see the similarity between the CFC/ozone layer situation and global warming. Lots of people are skeptical and there could be disastrous consequences for our planet if we continue with our behavior.
    The truly frightening thing is that, like the CFC situation, it'll probably require a big event similar to the hole in the ozone layer to spring people into action. Such as . . . . I don't know . . . maybe the flooding of some coastal cities.

    • @pramitbanerjee
      @pramitbanerjee 7 лет назад +7

      unlike the CFC however, global warming has feedback cycle and it will accelerate itself without any human assistance. So once trouble starts, there is no going back anymore.

    • @danaphanous
      @danaphanous 7 лет назад +4

      it will be even harder to convince people to do something about it because global warming is a much more complicated issue. In this example there is a very clear relationship and only one chemical reaction. It could be proven and we knew once the ozone layer started thinning that it was bad news. Also only one industry produced CFC's so the rest of the world could vote them done and initiate controls.
      For global warming there are whole books on the issue. Everyone knows CO2 is a minor greenhouse gas but the models that project the "problems" are shaky and don't predict accurately for more then a few years. So even though a lot of people agree warming is happening what everyone isn't convinced that it will result in a disaster scenario. Plus you can point to feedback mechanisms like the ocean absorption and plant/algae oxygen production increasing in response to rising CO2 levels to argue the earth will dampen the problem and slow down the effects. So there is no one clear argument to make and everyone has different ideas about how it will play out. Put on top of this the fact that almost all industries emit CO2 and you have a powerful lobby to stop regulations unlike in the case of CFC's where only one industry was affected most industries are affected so they will fight harder.
      It's the tipping point argument that many people don't buy. The models used to predict it have so far failed to predict even 3 years in the future accurately so should we trust them? Clearly the earth is warming and CO2 levels are rising along with ocean levels. I tend to believe it will become a "problem" but won't suddenly tip into disaster as the earth will dampen the effects to some degree as will the agreements. What we are doing with the Paris agreements and subsidizing alternative energies and gradually capping and reducing emissions will probably be enough to prevent a disaster scenario though we will have a warmer earth, higher CO2 levels, and higher ocean for awhile.
      Already alternative energies are taking over more and more of the grid so progress is being made. If we suddenly made regulations to cut emissions by half, for instance, we'd cause a market crash and skyrocketing energy prices. It takes time for change to occur but we are doing it. Don't let to vocal idiots scare you. Even in the US progress is steadily being made by many engineers who know and energy crisis is coming and are pioneering new tech so when it becomes cost effective the switch can be made. For now, the most mature reliable tech we have is nuclear but due to public fear about that it has not progressed to more then 20% of the US grid and is actually being reduced. Whereas in France 90% of their energy is nuclear thus they have very low emissions. If you want to make rapid progress on reducing emissions spread the word that nuclear is a good option, otherwise wait patiently because the other techs are going to take time and stuff like solar/wind can only be about 30% of the grid and are actually encouraging the building of new coal/gas plants as you need a large part of the grid to be something you can turn on and off quickly and produce constant power and solar/wind can't do that.

    Technically the title should be "How studying Venus saved the human race from self extinction". We didn't save the planet, just our own hides... again.
    Saving the planet, would be something like 'ejecting the planet from the solar system just in time before it's star explodes.'

    • @NameHierEinfuegen
      @NameHierEinfuegen 7 лет назад +3

      Or getting rid of the humans ;)

    • @AndreLeRoux81
      @AndreLeRoux81 7 лет назад

      NameHierEinfuegen you don't save the planet by killing of humanity, since humans are not destroying the planet, just making it uninhabitable for humans. Would you say that Mars is a destroyed planet...or that the earth would be destroyed if it was the same as Mars?

    • @NameHierEinfuegen
      @NameHierEinfuegen 7 лет назад

      No I wouldn't consider Mars destroyed, just dead. If we manage to make a Venus out of Earth I would say we pretty much killed the planet, but it's more probable that we just kill ourselfs and Earth as well as life goes on without us.

    • @AndreLeRoux81
      @AndreLeRoux81 7 лет назад +1

      This is the message that should be brought home. That we are pushing towards our own extinction. We should be trying to save ourselves and our future generations.
      This planet has faced worse than this species. And although we'll take a lot if other species down with us, the planet, and the life that remains, will easily carry on without us.

    Lets not overstate things here. Earth would have been just fine. At worst, a good percentage of species would have gone extinct, along with humans, which would have put an end to CFCs production and allowed ozone to be replenished. A few million years of evolution after that and Earth would have been back to its old luxurious self.

Some of the same arguments against global climate change action. GM sold the Ethyl Corporation in the 60s, probably due to liability concerns, but they had been poisoning the planet since the 20s. Actually there is one replacement for CFCs in the electronics industry which is pretty benign. Tetrachloromethane and TriChloroTriFlouroEthane were used for decades universally as a cleaner up till about 1990. Then someone figured out that of all things orange and lemon oils worked well for removing flux. I was one of the engineers involved in the trials for one company.

    Since the montreal protocal they have been fasing out r22, r12 to go to r134a and r404a. As a hvac tech the new refrigerants are hydrocarbons. R134a is being replaced with r600a, which is isobutane.

    "UV-driven phenolic formation in tree rings has dated the start of ozone depletion in northern latitudes to the late 1700s"?
    I don't think CFC are solely to blame...

    Can we control where ozone is and is not?
    Ozone, a colorless gas that can be good or bad, depending on where it is. Ozone in the stratosphere is good because it shields the earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Ozone at ground level, where we breathe, is bad because it can harm human health.
    Ozone forms when two types of pollutants (VOCs and NOx) react in sunlight. These pollutants come from sources such as vehicles, industries, power plants, and products such as solvents and paints.

    fun fact at one point the U.S. govt. offered money to manufactures who disposed of there CFC's responsibly however, this caused the businesses to purposely create more so that they could destroy it and get the money. When the govt discontinued the program the companies dumped the excess chemicals into the air.

    Compared to CFCs, HFCs and HCFCs have an almost negligible impact on the ozone layer, but they're still potent greenhouse gases.
