  • MusicRadar Basics is brought to you in association with Boss.
Octave and pitch effects aren't designed to change the tone of your guitar, but the notes themselves, and are a great way to add greater depth to your playing with ease.
Octave effects can be used to create notes an octave below the guitar lead line. Jimi Hendrix was known to use octave regularly - give Purple Haze a listen - and more recently Jack White has been using it to great effect.
Like the octave pedal, pitch will enable you to create note harmonies above and/or below your original guitar line to change it into a different key. You can then use it to extract a whole world of crazy bends and squeals from your guitar.

Hendrix and White use octave up, not down. Octave down has its uses. But emulating those two is not one of them.

What's the position in the chain for a octave pedal?

are all octave pedals actually octave fuzz pedals? I am trying to learn about this octave stuff and what it can do for the thickness and hugeness of guitar tone..

Ocataver ≠ Fuzz. Many fuzz pedals have a octaver in it but there are also pedals for only fuzz/only octave.

Michael Craig - no, some are a combo. The Pitchfork for example is just with whatever tone you have. Same with whammy and heaps of others.

Yeah, thanks. I know about fuzzes, distortions etc..trying to find out more about this octave stuff. Which is the best, or some of the better ones that dont have fuzz, just octave stuff? Like I said, trying to get a huge thick sound, but not just a distorted generic one..will the octave pedals help with that?

Michael Craig - yeah I'm in a similar situation. I've got the EHX Pitchfork in the mail. No extra tone, but with fuzz or distortion, can get that big choir/organ sound.

No, try a nano PG for starters unless you really want an octofuzz.

the OC-3 is a digital pitch shifter. It's not a real octave pedal. Those are analog (like the OC-2)

What exactly did this pedal do for Hendrix? I play a Fender Strat, and a Marshall JCM 2000 dsl 40 watt combo.. all I can afford now.. so I am looking for somethign to really get a huge gigantic Hendrix type tone, but have real thick and growly bass, because this amp has great gain, but not much thickness or bass. I just got an eq pedal...I do have a harmonist.. more on that. But I am wanting to know exactly what this octave pedal can do.. can it help to get a much thicker tone, when I just have a combo amp, not a head and cab. I am looking for the best way to get that huge Hendrix- Stevie Ray tone.. will this octave pedal do it? and what is the difference between this and an octave fuzz? Or is this an octave fuzz pedal also? Which is better? I have the harmonist, have not really explored it too much yet. IS it sort of like a digitech whammy? Do they do the same thing? I also saw a pedal called a pitchfork, but it seems the digitech whammy does the same things, just much better and more stuff. So what abouyt the similarities and differences, comparisons between the harmonist and digitech whammy? Jeez.. lots to learn here..

If you're trying to cop a Hendrix tone the OC-3 will do nothing for you. You want something based on the Octavia, which is a fuzz that also has an octave up effect. The OC-3 only does octave down.

Does the Octavia have an octave up, and down? My amp already has distortion, and I have a fuzz face and big muff. I dont think I need more fuzz. Maybe an octave pedal that just does the octave thing. Wouldn't that be more clear, and easier to hear what it does, instead of just adding more distortion or fuzz along with it? What would be the best one, if the amp itself already has plenty of distortion?I am mainly hoping to thicken up the tone a lot, build it way huge, but not more distorted. Is this the right effect to build a way huge thick tone, or is there something better for that?

    • @mark7166

Michael Craig No, it only does Octave up. I'd look at getting an Electro Harmonix POG of some sort if you're just wanting clean octaves (especially if you want octave up and down).
Probably a Micro POG or Nano POG, unless you want it to have lots of crazy features.

He used Vibe, Fuzz and Wah more than anything but he did use an octofuzz.

I own one. Place it as close to the start of your signal chain as you can. After a tuner. In my case I have it guitar into tuner, into compressor into Harmonist. For it to track at its best place it as close to the start of your signal chain as you can.

    Say it with me: Ock-TIve
The second syllable should sound like "second phoneme in "I've" as in "I've got to get to the store and buy an Octave pedal"
