This is probably the best “guitar pedals for beginners” video on here. You explained what each pedal does and demonstrated their uses really well without needing to make a 30 minute video that drags on.
Except that he didn't provide examples of the same licks with and without the pedals, so you could hear exactly what each one does to the sound. It doesn't help me figure out what pedal to get next to find the sound I want.
Nephalem Yes, but he's left out some crucial details, like which pedals enter at which point in the amp/effects loop path. Also, nothing about using an isolated power supply for each pedal, a critical part of any board. Save folks time and money by demonstrating what happens if you fail to provide isolated pedal power and end up with ten pedals worth of hissy, spitty noise.

yeah... except... NO FUZZ PEDAL!!!
Its all wrong information.
Dunlop is a professional SET of pedals that can't work by themselves as individual pedals.
Its the same situation with MXR's professional SET of pedals.
I've given you 2 years to realize you've told lies and misleading information and spreading confusion in the community.
You're clearly wrong and now you've been reported.

Thanks Trent! 🤘🏼
For me, I would say the essential pedals are tuner, overdrive, distortion/fuzz, reverb, delay, and some type of modulation (I prefer flanger), EQ, and compression. Less necessary, but personally super-fun for me, would be a looper and octave pedal.
Wrong.
@@dreyn7780 Ratio
what makes em essential
Nope.
octave pedal unlocked the guitar for me
I once bought a tuner pedal and turned it on, (it was my first pedal I didn’t know how it worked) there was no sound then I told my dad that it isn’t working when it is on. We bought another one and we thought it was a defective unit and the we bought ANOTHER ONE and the same thing happened. I looked it up and it said that it cuts the signal when it is on. Stupidity at it’s finest.
Hahaha
man I am dead lol lol
You should have told the store that the first one didn't work. Then they could have explaine to you why and you would have save a lot of money.
😂😂😂😂 at least ur guitar is gonna be really in tune
Reine H
If he told the store "it doesn't work" then they're just going to take his word for it and return it...
Are you and Rachel still on a break???
bro i was just bouta to say somn along the lines of that
I was looking for someone to say something lmfaoo
Omg I was just about to comment something along those lines!!!
Omg I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees Ross 😂
Lol
A humble suggestion for any guitar player: Get an isolated power supply for your pedalboard.
Strymon Ojai,Zuma are the beast and 1spot Pro also :D
What do you mean with an isolated power supply?
Juan Orol Like a Voodoo Lab or the likes. They have isolated individual outputs for each cable to connect to each pedal and really help to keep the unwanted noises down that come with running daisy chains🤙
J Frog thanks!
Plz check out Caline P-1 pwr unit before you spend all that money on that B S . I'm running 13 pedals including 2 18v and 2 daisy chains with no noise. It's under $40 on EBay all day long. If you want to spend $80 to $160 go ahead but I'm very satisfied with this set-up,enough to recommend it to others! Big pwr in 8 outlets and no problems in a yr of use. Remember 13 pedals, actually I have a couple of outs on each end for add-ons. Use 16 pedals but don't include the passive volume pedal. Still have an electric out on that side. Just don't use it YET! Bad thing about G.A.S. Never know, something cool could come along and I'm always ready. I do run 16 pedals on my board at times. Plus a tap tempo also. It a BAD ASS unit trust me
So all pedals are good for funk ?
Yep all the pedals could be used for funk but in truth you could just go straight into amp and play funk with a clean tone. Compressors and boost pedals have been associated with funk. Check out Catfish Collins from the James Brown band, No effects.
Most of HIS peddles are good for funk. Keep in mind, most funk musicians did tons of LSD.
@@CoffeeConversationMusicGear But for grunge and metal ??
@@jameshet8309 the only pedals for grunge and metal there I can see being used is the xotic rc booster and the mxr phase90.
@@CoffeeConversationMusicGear so the pedalls who you have there are good or specially for grunge and metal ??
nice video. for starters didn't bore us to tears with a long intro like most such videos, got right to it, and explained things in a straightforward way, not chatty or trying to be cute or jokey about it. finally a video by an adult.
Something I love about this video, other than revisiting it three years later--first time I had only been playing guitar a year--is you're presenting it with just your guitar, an amp, and a good but modest number of affordable pedals, sitting on the sofa. Most of the videos like this, the presenter is surrounded by gear, several super expensive guitars, and they're showing off pedals which are not only expensive but not what you would find in your average shop. It's relatable.
Also you're not showing off a bunch of gear that was provided to you by the manufacturers.
My comment three years ago, I got an all-in-one thing. Ended up selling that and now I have six pedals which are pretty standard but essential to how and what I play.
Thanks for making this video, it helped me a lot early in my guitar playing.
Attention everyone: This is the way to make a video.
Why on gods green earth did I just see this video now, after buying several multi-effects pedals and returning them, just to end up with a Avid Eleven Rack, when this video could have helped me getting the right pedals from the beginning!?!?!?! Thank's for the video ;-)

Pedals for beginners? There's almost 1000$ on that pedal board!!!
Chico Medina es rico por eso para el eso no es nada
Mira su casa, guitarras se nota q es de clase alta
He was just going through types and how you use them, not specific pedals.
How do you get a grand out of that board? Used I could get that for about $700. C'mon man shop around, dont jump on the first thing you see. I got 16 pedals on my board hook-up and it's only at about $1200. 3 drives 2 delays. Only 3 minis. Only 1 pedal brand new and waited til could use my EBay bucks on that 1. That is a mini Sonic stomp. I also bought my Dime bag wah new but that was in 2003 when that pedal was first released. Now used you can get 1 for under $100 when you shop around and look. Don't rush,it will come to you. I wanted a 10 band E Q w/ silent mod. Waited and looked for about 2 yrs. Found 1 for $90. Now I don't look for that so much. But I never found 1 that cheap again. I got all kinds of those deals on my board. I guess I'm lucky ,but I work HARD for that lucky shit. Just shop around, watch Ebay,Reverb and Craiglist. Whatever it takes, you gotta do the work.
@@sparkyguitar0058 why the fuck you have 3 drives I just have 1 distortion and a drive on my amp and it can hit any heavy metal / rock tone I guess youd call it
In my opinion and choice, I'm gonna buy them in my order of importance:
1. Delay
2. Reverb
3. Wah
4. Volume
5. EQ
6. Overdrive if I got extra cash, which i probably won't, but so I can switch to overdrive and back mid song
The most important is the last pedal from the professional SET of pedals.
If you mix brands they won't activate the old-fashioned sound.
The Dunlop wah is part of a professional SET of pedals and won't activate the old-fashioned sound without the rotovibe pedal at the end.
Follow the professional brand and stop listening to looney male gossip.
What a comprehensive video and a friendly guy!
Thank you for sharing with us!
I loved your wah explanation. Simple and effective. Amazing content
and WRONG.
Unfortunately Dunlop is a professional SET of pedals not individual pedals.
The crybaby pedal requires further refinement from a Dunlop rotovibe pedal.
Guitarist have wasted decades of their lives not realizing this basic information about Dunlop wah pedals.
Without the rotovibe pedal the crybaby pedal makes a harsh 2080's style sound and can't activate the old-fashioned sound.
6:07 cameraman wearing only socks ✊🏼
Lol who cares
That's so he can walk quietly while recording video. The video is about guitar pedal sounds, not shoes on floor sounds.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about effects and the way how they can interact with each other. I myself got an almost proper board. All what I was needing more was a wah/compressor/and phaser. I think it's now something done. I simply ordered what was missing to my usual musical instruments shop. And the three of them have been selected from a brand which I affectionate a lot. Electro-harmonix (ehx abbreaviated). I don't even imagine how the final result will sound like. Cheers from Belgium :)
Thanks that's really helpful, you're a really great guitarist too
Damn, I really miss playing guitar. Depression has been pretty bad for over 15 years and I can't fix it. Hoping one day I'll be able to pick up my guitar again.
We hope you can find your way back to the music 🙏
Can relate to that...I’m bipolar and when in depression ( bipolar low ) I’m stuffed...no motivation at all
You are insane - I've watched this video numerous times just to listen to you rip off those little riffs. Absolutely love your sound.
Thanks for the support 🙏
Great video. Thanks! Grtz from The Netherlands.
I literally thought all these sounds were made by the amp
These alter the signal on the way to the amp. Some amps do have a couple of these effects built in and have their own distortion sound.
@@michaelb9537 yea mine has built in stuff, really nice for beginner although it is a cheaper amp
Depends on what amp you're using. Some have built in effects, and some dont.
@@thesuperiorinferior7844 Which amp are you using ?

If you're a beginner you don't need: TUNER, VOLUME PEDAL, COMPRESSOR, 2 OVERDRIVES, TREMOLO AND PHASER...unless your genre or style requires specifically one of those.
The best all arounder is: overdrive, distortion, chorus and delay. That's it!
Of course if you play ambient you'll need a volume and a big reverb...for funky and fingerstyle a compressor, for rockabilly a reverb and tremolo; Phaser if you play 70's rock or funky (but it can be very versatile), flanger for rock/metal or darkwave.
And in case people forget to mention it...you've got serious guitar chops. I hope your channel contains videos of you playing live👏🎸😊
i spent 2 years putting together my ideal pedal board and it was fun but also a nightmare, and expensive. i have about 13 pedals on there but i bought and sold about another 27 pedals before i was happy. I'm super happy with it now, and it literally gives me a headache to look at pedals right now, but I am seriously happy with everything that's on there. Thanks for the demo, solid pedal board sounded really good
The pedal board is a journey all it's own!
Thanks for this all killer, no filler explanation. Other videos are wordier and lack examples. Yours provides immediate empowerment!
Thanks for watching!
Refreshingly strait forward
This is a nice video. I'm this close to getting a Wah pedal, and this nudged me a little bit closer.
0:37 "How porn music is made"
Lmao dead😂😂😂
JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA!!!
hey when you have time you definitely need to check out this channel here on youtube called “Christ forgiveness ministries” and hear the message they have. sin will drag us all down to eternity in hell fire, and we all sinned, so our only hope is in Gods mercy and grace which is this
john 3:16-21:
“for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
and romans 10:9-13:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
God bless you friend ✝️👑💟
Lifetime Achievement Award from whatever the porn version of the Grammys is to the inventor of the wah pedal...
Lmaoooooooooo
Super nice video, and great player! I wish i was able to play all those genres
I like how you silently state that it's more about the playing than the effect. You don't turn it up so much that it will interfere what it's all about--the playing. And you do play well.
HEY!
I just wanna say that you played amazingly
I have that same kind of setup as my little travel board. Little pedal train Jr volume wah phaser delay reverb compressor distortion. That's all you need!
My top 10: Tuner, distortion, chorus, delay, reverb, overdrive, wah wah, looper, drum machine, pitch shifter
Ross is that you?
I've been playing for like 2 yrs and this is still way above me😀
The sound and the flow rocking is awesome. Good taste and nice playing man. I Have the orange phaser, the Tube screamer and the RC like you. For my honest opinion the DD8 is a nice pedal with a lot of options and sounds and the chorus pedal is simple but effective. Nice review cheers.
How about overdrive , fuzz and distortion altogether and earthquaker device on top
Of all the youtube stuff i have seen about pedals for use..this is by far the best
Thanks for watching!
It looks so great! Thanks a lot for video, very simple
Great vid! But would be dope if you mentioned the brand and model of each pedal
Starting in 2009 I switched to using a stompbox, before I used digital effects. in terms of advantages analog effects are easier to operate just by turning the knob and feel how big the coloring changes. also the bypass signal is still good, the guitar tone is still thick. since I switchedto the stompbox sound engineer never complains.
I could listen to that wah wah all day long!
Next except for modularion pedals like tremolo, the Orange Crush 35RT ,( reverb plus tuner) can do what most pedals do!! Has clean volume control, that can also blend with dirty channel. The dirty channel, ( 1 input, 2 channel,4 anolog pre amps), footswitchable or on amp controls also switch clean/ dirty. Now i find with this amp i dont need any pedals , lije overdrive, distortion, fuzz can get all this from amp even at bedroom levels.
Tried few pedals like tube screamer but didnt do much amp ciuldnt do, and as always with Orange amps already have boosted mids and articulation of lows is very good, now I know this os Solid state amp, but blown away with tube sound saturation im getting from this light weight small amp pleanty loud!!
Im using this matched with my Vox Cambridge 30 in stereo guitar rig using EBMM pan/vol pedaland with stage seperation up to 50 feet i can get some great syereo effects something i wanted to be able to do since 1970.. Never after seeing Who Quadorphenia live in opera house Chicago, thought why more bands werent doing at least stereo. So today with technology you kids got it Great!! Lookning into now something like EHX tri parallel pedal to do more than simple chain.
Finally! best explanations. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Nice and clear demo...i have already of 6 pedals,,only lacking is the tremolo, wah, volume pedal, compresor and booster.
I like that volume pedal after distortion but before the delay tip.
sounds cool right?
I just watched that i thought you did a great job.. i think your gonna get plenty of clicks and in 2 years you will be right up there with the best ...
ive been getting into playing the guitar and had no idea these exist... lol
Not only did I learn a lot about pedals but I also picked up a few sweet licks from you. Cheers.

I still use the First gen Flashback and I love the Tape mode the best ,, Thank you so much for. Confirming I chose the right mode . It works great on slower blues tunes and ballads ,, It really fills in the bottom tones .

Excellent démo, very useful and interesting. Thank you for these advices for starting in the world of guitar's pédals.
Its wrong information and very misleading.
MXR makes a professional SET of pedals not individual pedals.
Those MXR pedals won't activate the old-fashioned sound without the carbon copy pedal at the end.
Great video. Thanks for your simple explanation on what a pedal is for, what it does, and how to use it. You also are a great player. The tone on that Tele is awesome. Thanks for making this video.
Its wrong information and very misleading so we've reported this video to the authority.

Lots of those brands are custom electronics and can't activate the old-fashioned sound without the SET of pedals from the 1 brand.

Just got my first pedal the day before yesterday, which is a multi effect pedal including ‘expression pedal’-so wah, volume, and whatever else I may use it for, I still have no idea. Just that first demonstration with the wah, I’m totally doing that tomorrow!
I’ve been playing less than nine months by the way.
It’s funny how I’m watching this like one of those seminars on new products at the Apple Store.
Can you please do a full equipment list. Amp, P.A., all pedals?

wow. so many effects and i dont hear any noise. How could it be?
im having problem with noise. i use my behringer umc202HD as my audio interface, but a lot of noise coming in when i plugin the guitar.
any good recommendations for low noise cable?

The more I learn about the electric side and watch video's like this one makes me just want to stick to my acoustic 12 stringer. My brain is gonna explode trying to learn all about the electric side.
I'm ignorant, but i need to know why you would buy an overdrive or distortion pedal if you can do it directly from your amp. I mean i have never used a pedal in my life but still i would like to understand more about them. Is it because it is easier to set the effect If you have it on a pedal during a live performance, or because you can get better effects than the amp, or because you can combine both amp and pedal, or they are just basically the same? I don't know, if someone would be so kind to answer me that would be awesome, thank you.
Thank you Ross, glad to see the music path worked out for ya!
😂
Very nice how you made the Phase 90 so versatile. Kind of 3 pedals in one. Thx!
Thanks for the great video, this will help me set up my pedal board and experiment with different tones!
I thought you did a great job. Nice information, nice tutorial. Some nice pedal choices. Nice Tele replica, who makes it, I couldn't tell. I'd like to see more from you. Excellent video.

I really don't think a beginner needs a compressor. Tuner, Tube screamer, delay and maybe Wah would be enough.
So cool sound effect.

Good evening. Excellent video. Please if I want to add a looper pedal to the mix, should it be the last pedal I add on? ( The pedal that connects everything to the amp?)

What I can say is your pedalboard is awesome, you've choosen the most important effects to put in together as one killer machine... but do you have a noisy problem because I can't see any noise gate on your board?
