- Prices have dropped and a friend recently bought a Porsche 993 for £30K, could not pass up the chance to drive and look over this bargain! Nick Murray makes a guest appearance to talk about his own 993!
Check out Nick Murray's great channel!!

What a beauty!!
Alright Nick. Enough messing around in New Zealand now. Get back and get making 993 content. I need it! 😜
You pop up in surprising places Nick? 🤔 enjoy being back in the motherland and kiwi sun. Hope to see you out there in 2021 when I can get out of the UK latest lockdown @nickmurray
FYI In the US 993’s are a lot more expensive than 964’s. They’ll keep on climbing since they’re the last of the air cooled cars. Regarding the driving experience if you drive the 911 3.2 it will feel more raw than a 964. At the end of the day, the 993 is overall a better car than the 964, it’s called evolution !! You can’t go wrong with either one !!
Could someone explain why it doesn’t have a ‘911’ silhouette? It’s a slightly smoother 964! It’s really not that radical
Does have, just a little rounded at both ends👍🏻
@@verdeboyo nice one! I wouldn’t mind having either 😜
@@Jamesmorley1999 oh and a happy new year to you Sir👍🏻
Better than the 964.
@@verdeboyo happy new year 👍👍
Colour is Arena Red.. as in “Kills bugs fast”
Yes, Turbo was launched in Arena Red - one of the best colors for those
@@Dwelijan I had my Caterham Seven painted in Arena red, great colour; I did read that it wasn't a popular colour with Porsche owners.
Get in 😂
Love the 993. See they sound like a bag of spanner’s on start up like my 996
it was like a dirty diesel 😳
My love of Porsches is certainly coming back as I’m getting older, definitely get one when you decide to sell the influenza.
Happy new year Jack
i discovered the channel way back when i started loving 964s and specifically the 964 turbo and that video comparison...i wonder what you'd get if you got a 911 again jack
A TVR would be an interesting proposition? Maybe a Tuscan or Chimaera?
spot on!
When the new owner takes this car for its first service, he’s going to find a £5-£10k maintenance bill, no one would sell this car for £30k (not even a trade deal), if it’s been well maintained.....
In the video, it was mentioned it's running original dampers after quarter of a century and 120k miles...it's probably also been run on 'long life' cryptonite oil with 60k service intervals too!
...and will probably find a lot more rust too!
I love a 993.
I used to walk passed a gorgeous dark blue one with grey interior on my way to school. It looked stunning back then, and I think they still look ace.
That’s just the purchase price. It will cost twice as much when you’re done doing all that it will need getting done.
Who cares. It’s a great car!
The best shape ,993
I've learned lots from your videos Jack this one included, great review, I'm looking at 993's now on autotrader !
Thanks Roger!!
A 993 for 30k hard to believe, I’m always looking at prices all the time and have never seen one that cheap? Lucky chap, love the colour too. 👍
I think this car was just the exception rather than the rule and was probably underpriced by its seller - the new owner just got very lucky!
Swap the Influenzo with a 993......... Nooooooo. This is a daily driver not something special and unique. A good car but just a car and as common as a Volvo. It would be more interesting if you bught a old GTR or something interesting. How about a Renault clio v6, A Alpine 310, Any Lotus, Honda NSX, Datsun 240Z. But a 911 - come on Jack. There are enough people on the net that are babbling about those. Even in Norway where I come from, we have at least 20 Porsche 911s in every town. If you must have a Porsche, get a Boxster and shop off the frontscreen and make a speedster tribute from it. I have owned several 911s, and think they are great. But special, not really. Stick to plan and get a 355 or even a 348 and make it go and handle.
The 993 turbo is in my opinion the best Porsche ever made. £250000 for a mint one. If I had £70000 to buy a tastey coupe I’d buy a Ferrari 360. In silver, manual gearbox. Or for less than half the price a mint Manaro Vxr 500. Oh yes. 6.0 supercharged v8. 500 bhp.👍
If you do end up selling the 308, please please get a F355. They are one of the prettiest Ferrari's ever and the noise of that v8 is incredible! 😍😎
Even if I could afford one of these, which I can’t, it’s very hard for me to justify the premium over the 996 like the one I bought (also Arena Red 😎)
Infuenzo replacement: 105 Alfa Romeo
Still looking for an F355? I have a 1995 (pre-airbag with the 'nice' steering wheel) that I have been instructed by my wife to sell (!). Got a 1996 993 Carrera in September (Iris blue, light grey leather hardback sports seats, manual, sunroof and (gasp) rear wiper). 355 is Rosso Corsa/tan leather with full history (last belt service in 2020 was over £5K!!!). I don't want to see it go as I have now had it for 10 years. But if you're interested I am in Otford, near Sevenoaks in Kent. Make me an offer and save my marriage...Cheers, Neil.
Very good I think your next project the Ferrari Dino 1971/2 beautiful car. I hope the Alfa ok, happy new year Jack.😎
Get a Ferrari 360 Jack - can pick em up for £40k of lucky, but £50k easy. Would be great to see you run that mate 👍👍👍
If you replace the 308, get a the Dino inspired 360 and if any problems, consult with Ratarossa 🤣
Eh 964 preferred over 993. When did this happens. Oh ny gosh. I’m off shop a 993
“Arena’” red. Came with 16” wheels as standard. 17” Cup 2 and 18” options... As for torque. I think you’ll find the non Vario’ is a bit more torque’y early on in the rev’ range.
That car appears to have metallic paint, 18” wheels, Cruise, rear wiper and looks like the rare A/C option. Most 993’s were quite basically spec’d.
You are very right about classic prices too. The bubble has definitely burst! Escort Cosworth owners in the clouds: Take note.
I’ve got a Fiat 500’and just don’t get this?
Cheapest manual coupe 993 on Pistonheads is £60K, so that is a freak price, though the engine bay looks awful. Cheapest unmodified UK manual coupe Carrera S is £90K.
That is a good looking 993, there's a turbo version not far from me in a very similar colour and I always think wow when I see it drive past ! Hope 2021 is kind to you Jack and to everyone else !
Unusual to see an Integrale out and about. I bet the driver took a second look at the 993 too.
highly unlikely seeing as an Integrale is much rarer!
Another 911 would be fantastic. A 993 would be great to see on your channel
Nice car, but it's a 5 minute movie if you really stretched it, Jack.
So, to sum up, I didn't like them but now I do. How very 911 of you.
pleeeeeese press the button on the handbrake before applying - i hate that ratcheting noise wearing away those teeth [yes im an old school mechanic] on your friends car. all the best for 2021 + keep up the good work. i like your good days / bad days equally - a true reflection on the world we live in. cheers.
964 for life Jack - don't mind a 993 but as you said 964s were the last 911 looking shape. 80% different to a G series but still could not confuse it for anything but a 911.
How anyone could confuse a 993 for anything but a 911 is beyond me 🙄
This is why Porsche has always been better than Ferarri and McLaren 🦵
I remember that I didn't like the 993 back then ( i could not imagine how bad things would get with the 996) but from today's point of view i almost consider it a modern classic. And yes , 30k is a steal basically.
you should consider a Maserati as your next purchase!!!
Hello Jack, I think the price is a fair value, I have been looking for one for a while now, (Canada and U.S.) and this particular car is priced right, for starters it has 120k miles, that's close to 200k kilos.Over 200k kilos, cars really start to depreciate, even, should I say it? (a 911, oh, I feel the wrath). Can't see why you think its such a good deal though, considering the mileage and condition, this will have to have an engine job in the not to distant future, (my guess 10k Pounds), and other upgrades. Prices are pretty constant for these, ie. if you find one of these cars at 40k miles expect to pay double what this car has been bought for. Just my considerable opinion, ha, ha. Love your videos.
Thanks John!! Happy new year buddy!!
One day I'll have one. That's a beautiful motor
That’s my friend’s car. He sold it to your friend a few months ago. We went to many car shows with our 993s and had some great times. Mine was a polar silver 993 Carrera (1994 pre-Varioram). By the way, the Varioram mechanism can stick, affecting power, particularly at low revs. Worth looking at that first. I hear your friend has spent some serious money on it. Good to hear it’s continuing to be looked after as well as it was before. I have a manual 997 turbo now in meteor grey. My friend is still thinking about which 911 to get next!
I was going to suggest the Varioram as a possible source of power drop. I remember one on Wheeler Dealers and that needed fixing.
Something funny going on here, there’s not a manual C2 coupe available under £45K
Yeah I've found any cars that sit around the 3-4 decades period end up exponentially rising. Kids back then coveted them. So now willing to pay any figure to acquire them, now they have the money.
@@rocketn8 welcome to the world of 1970’s Japanese motorbikes!
@@PhilbyFavourites Absolutely. Already seeing it in 90s superbikes. Not exponential increase yet but i now really want a original Fireblade and now realise i should have bought one 3 years ago, as an investment. Nvm
How about a Citroen SM as the next car seeing as you are brave!
Having owned a 993 turbo 4 for over 15 years I think the 993 is an awesome Porsche . Beautiful and amazingly fast with looks that seem ageless. Think I need to have a lie down!!!
Beautiful car. Worth a shit load. The best Porsche ever made in my opinion.
A 993 would be a perfect replacement for the 308. If you get a worn or tired one you can do a lot of work updating its parts to get the exact focus and driveability that you want giving you the 911 you want that responds how you want it to.
The colour is called Arena Red. It was the launch colour on the 993 Turbo..
Enjoyed the video Jack. Lovely car at a reasonable price. My favourite model 911. A 97' 993 Turbo in Arena Red would be one of my lotto win cars amongst others. I'm 15 months away from 55 when I can take a lumper out of my pension as long as Coroni hasn't smashed it any more. A 997 C2s is on the top of my list but will be having a good look at 993 prices when the time comes as I didn't realise these were similar money of late.
Jack i'm looking for a w/end toy come March onwards and the Alfa GTA is is on my lust list so if you ever need to sell in the near future for a new project let me know as I could be interested as I know it would be right.
Happy new year mate...
Have you thought about a LHD 360 Modena or a high mileage RHD as a replacement for the 308..
I have.. would have to be a manual though!
@@Number27 another option might be a R8 manual..🤔🤔
Tell your friend (if he's interested)- I will safely restore the paint, plastics, and leather. I've done so with a few classics, including my 996. I'll even do it for free- for the love of Porsche :)
Good review. Wouldn't be my choice colour wise (exterior and interior). I do like the overall shape.
Unsure you can say it “doesn’t have the 911 silhouette! Jeez, it’s the most beautiful incarnation of the 911 and definitely doesn’t look like anything other than a 911! Total perfection and the natural progression from the 964 which somewhat archaic and agricultural. Yes, I do have a 993 before you say! I enjoy your videos but I’ve never heard anyone say it’s not a 911 silhouette!
It’s two and a half years later and 993s got even much more expensive. I was looking at 993s this year here in Switzerland and the cheapest was 40k pounds that was crashed (was sold after 2 days on the market), next is 45k totally rusty example with 200k miles that needs 30-40k togeit into a decent conditin. A few weeks one extremely nice spec 993 4 for 50k came up I bought it the next day. It wouldn’t last long on the market, used car dealers would take immediately but the owner would luckily only sell to a private enthusiast. Those 993 in decent condition go now for minimum 60-70k and those with recent mechanical/engine restoration work for 80k+
I am talking about manual coupe only.
There are three 993 on EBay now under £30k, two of them Cabriolet.
Tis the season to sell Motorbikes and Cabriolets ... I would guess that changes to 'buy Cabriolets' around March ... ?
Tiptronics. Unusual for a manual to be this cheap.
You havent bought a TVR yet
Surely an Alfa SZ would be a good replacement for your 308? And, GTA?
Another great review! Man your blue 964 was beautiful! Since you have owned a few 911s what would you recommend buying for 45k in the 911 family? I am still thinking of a 997 05/06. But latley I am in love with the 2014/15 981 cayman . I would really like to own a 993 but out of my budget! Any input would be great! Thx
Replacement for the 308...
BMW E39 M5...
400hp
V8
Rear wheel drive
Manual transmission.
Get a usable one for £12 - 15k.
Loads of fun, and lots of things to upgrade..
Influenzo has been the highlight of 2020 for me, sad to see her go. How about a Caterham Build?
Ferrari 355 now your talking
Underdog or not @£30k that's a steal. You'd be lucky find a nice one for almost double that. Great car though.
Alpine GTA/ A610 ...or to keep it Italian, something from the Maserati back catalog perhaps; a 3200 ( if you're feeling brave) , or a 4200 GT. A TVR, if you can live with plastic maggots, which if you've lived and loved an Esprit, will be nothing new ...?!
It's all in the mind of the PeteolHead: for me, this is simply an rather ugly, plum-coloured, not particularly quick or well-handling example of a mass-produced sports car. I get that it's an icon, but I don't get thrilled by Madonna or Lady Gaga. 30k buys much more interesting drives, for me. Horse (power)s for courses. Thanks for the vids, Jack!
I owned MY1990 964 C4 and despite throwing a bucket of cash at it with new suspension etc it still drove a little like a 1970’s Triumph Spitfire 🤨... the MY1997 993 I also had was by far the better car... mind you the 964 was proof positive that these cars can run forever @ 160,000 miles.. other than new coil pack and battery it was faultless.. Either way, both cars lovely 😀
Love the 993, but here’s my off-the-wall suggestion for the Ferrari replacement.......an Alfa Romeo 105 saloon. Buy it cheap in Italy using your contacts over there and fit an Alfaholics handling and engine kit. It looks like a boring old saloon but is an amazing drive apparently. Check out the RUclips video of Alfaholics taking one up the Stelvio pass
If you do eventually sell up the Influnenzo...... Get a TVR!!!! Preferably a complete shitter Cerebra. Endless content with that. Also actually really easy to work on. If you buy a v8 i promise I'll buy it when your done. Best car I've ever had. Love the channel. Happy New year.
Slower, less safe, older, less green, really ugly steering wheel, that wonderful oil smell in the cabin, and now much more expensive than the 996 and 997. Not in my garage and who cares about AIR COOLED. The car is really oil cooled with air blowing about. Finally if Porsche thought they could stay with the 993 model and engine they would have. NM probably would like a Fred Flintstone car with bare foot power. And he could have his cute little dog assist in the drive. Then he could say 6 foot power. Owners of 993 defend it in hopes that it will justify the ridiculous overpriced 911 that the 993 is. So that their resale will give a higher return. Give it a brake gen 5 through 8 will give you a safer more comfortable ride.
I bought a 1995 993 in 2014 for 20k 42K Miles, I have 13K in Repairs, The AC was not working the Evaporator needed to be replaced 15 Hours labor, Love the Car but you have to keep up on service.
The 993 does drive really well, significantly better than the 964. The suspension on the 993 (rear in particular) is massively better than the 964. I owned RS versions of both 20 years ago, however if you drive a 987 Boxster S or Caymen S then you won't want to drive a 964 or a 993 again...
Also... I would love you to get a 993. The 308 is okay. But a little blah! Now. The 205 was of great interest. And a 993 would be awesome as it’s something many of us aspire to or think of getting ourselves. The 308 not so much...
Jack, your killing me, I have had two 993 coupes, you can’t touch a 993 for anything close to that over here... Heck Mondials have gone back up to $49k-$100 fricken K...Put that 993 on a track and you will see why it’s the best air cooled car there is....
Had to stop watching at the “doesn’t have the 911 silhouette” comment. Not liking a 993 based on “image” is just silly - just as silly as not liking the 964 for having plastic bumper covers was back in the day. They’re all 911’s, and they’re all amazing.
Love the 993. I have a silver on black 85 with the factory spoiler package, full leather interior and sport seats. The right 993 is the only car I'd possibly trade it for. Just not Arena Red, just not my color, and not with the twist wheels. RUF wheels and tail, and I'd be happy.
The 993 is definitely amongst the best looking or maybe even the best looking "911" but like all "911's" ridiculously expensive for no real discernible reason, special?,yes, but not that special.
Happy new year. My ten pence worth. 968 manual springs to mind. There are no decent videos on these beauties. 993/964 are to similar and you've done that already or go balls out and get the monster. (alfa SZ)
The TVR comments.are a good idea but i recommend a T350C. again little or no video on those and plenty of work to keep you and us happy.
How does this "Not have look like the classic 911"?.
The 993 was the most perfect air cooled iteration of the 911 (in my opinion).
The likes were smothered out just enough to make it even more beautiful than the 964.
This is my dream chassis for the, 911's before the wrecked it worth the 996.
To me it was the pinnacle of the 911 shape.
Not to mention the turbos for the era are worth waaaaay more than any 964 turbo.
I think you should try a water cooled 911. Possibly an early 996 for their reasonable prices and they make excellent project cars. Then again you can pick up high mileage 997's pretty cheap and they're superb 911's!
I have had 911s, 964s, 993s, 996s & 997s.Personally I would not want an old 993 when a 996 or 997 is cheaper, much nicer inside, & more modern & reliable. Part of the reason that one was cheaper than most will be the burgundy paint & beige leather. Neither are as popular as normal colours. I wouldn't want either. But that is just personal choice.
Unsure of your historical facts there......the 964 pretty much saved Porsche from going bankrupt. Hence they were able to continue with further models ie the 993.
It’s absurd to say the 964 is the “last 911 to look like a 911.” Each generation has adhered to, and deviated from, certain elements of the original 911, but they all look like 911s.
I would say a 73 carrera RS if it’s an air cooled Porsche, probably out of your price range though. If your looking into 90s cars and don’t mind it being Japanese a highly modified and crazy horsepower supra.
I respect 993 a lot as being last air cooling 911 but the prices are unrealistic in market. 993 turbo is over 100k usd!! 996 turbo is around 25k usd and for me it is most handsome 911 since my childhood👍
I guess part of the reason it's cheap it's that the engine bay is quite ugly for a 993, usually at least in France and Italy they are a lot more "cleaner". Better drive them than wash them don't get me wrong and unfortunately we need 45-50 for a non-varioram car in France
We had a pristine low mileage 96 993 about a decade ago, in turquoise with light grey leather , best looking car I’ve ever had and a cracking engine. But the offset driving position gave me backache after an hour and at stupid speeds the steering got very light. Wanted a 911 for 30 years at the time ,got rid after 18 months. Old adage about meeting your hero holds true. If you’re going to get one take a long test drive.
I’d like to see a 993 on the channel as a replacement for the Ferrari
Next car: Lotus Esprit. The last affordable poster car. And there are loads to choose from in the UK.
Completely agree with the view that cars which were heavily inflated over the last ~5 years are falling in price, & it's totally a good thing for most people. Super super rare/collectible stuff aside, I think they will continue to fall as ICE engines cars are seen as more undesirable/restricted more.`
I saw my first 993 turbo in that colour and thought Porsche just can’t improve on that. I was right, they changed the whole evolution concept with the total redesign of the 996, which I hated when it first came out. I saw a turbo with a twin rear spoiler and it was the first time I liked the 996. But being water cooled, just didn’t seem like a 911.
Would love to see you take on a 996 .
It's a shame you weren't smitten with the 348. I think it's such a pretty car that I can see really appreciating. Will have a good think.
A pristine 355 wouldn't be interesting but a basket case you have to properly restore, like your 308, would be pretty cool.
Another car easy to find with lots of sex appeal and doable restoration: e-type
OOOOHHH what a car, the last of the pretty ones. I love Porsches and I would have a Porsche over a Firerrari any day. And I think you will find two working headlights on an Alfa was an optional extra.
Probably cheap because of the color combo. Let's be honest, the car is burgundy with a beige interior. Not the most striking combo compared to red, black, silver, etc.
Is the Busso better than the Ferrari V8?
I saw a Ferrari 412 advertised at 28k the other day in need of recommissioning - I assume that's probably a bit more Ratarossa?
When will car RUclipsrs start saying Porsche the correct way. We don't say Lambogeenee or Farrrarri its Porsche with the e sounding er. And before anyone asks, no, I have nothing better to do at the moment.
I remember looking at a black one of these back in 2007...it was £23k. Now where's that crying emoji...
Not sure if you had one yet, but BMW 635CSi seem to be on the cusp since a while. You could shoot a nice one for about 20K without losing money ;)
Just watching this you can tell that Porsche drives well. Something about the cars movement. Don’t sell the Ferrari though - that’s why I watch.
I own a 993. It likes very high octane fuel. Are you able to get 98 octane RON fuel or higher in the UK? If not a 993 is going to feel really sleepy at low rpms.
What? The 993 is the last 911 that looks like a 911...
Yeh not sure what he’s on about tbh
Are you saying the gta is quicker than that 993 or just feels more responsive ? Next car to succeed to your 308 could be an AM Zagato
A dry sump system with 10 quarts of oil being pumped to the front of the car and then through an oil cooler with a fan forcing in cool air before going back to the engine at the rear of the car, yet people always refer to these cars as 'air cooled'!
the engine is about as attractive to look at as an air conditioning unit on the side of a building
ha ha ha made my day. Look no further than under the bonnet of the 147 gta, and the 911 plans go swiftly away.
That's very cheap. I've been keeping an eye on prices and haven't seen a manual coupe under 40K. Looks a great car!
