11 years on RUclips, 141,000 views, & 27 comments. Sure, Elton is BIG, career-wise & he wrote this song. But come on, people. There's tens of millions of us who've been listening to Hall & Oates ever since _Sara Smile_ in 1972
I've never seen such an underrated song. Certainly Hall & Oates deserve better. And no doubt Elton was more than happy to license his song to them. They are, afterall, Philadelphia's own...
I'm a native Texan, but a modern Texan in a very multi-cultural & musically-eclectic world, not a stereotypical cowboy. And even present-day farmers & ranchers here enjoy music from all over. Point is we're not from Philly... but we've got nothing but respect for Philly. And I'm sure it's safe to say that many a 70's boogie child or 80's baby feels exactly the same way...
    We salute you, Philadelphia!
Hall & Oates, Dexter Wansel & MFSB, The Three Degrees, the Trammps, Mr Cornelius & his _Soul Train..._ the list goes on

Thanks for including the lyric. "Philadelphia Freedom" takes its name from Billy Jean King's tennis team, but in the song's context it refers to the personal liberation that comes from honoring and experiencing diversity. It has been a sort of anthem among the LGBTQ community for decades.
Choosing this city for the title works in a couple of ways. Philadelphia in the 18th century was the birthplace of American freedom from British rule. In that city the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. Jump forward a couple centuries and it is home to the Philly Sound, a fusion of R&B, soul, and symphonic influences to create a popular music style that appealed to a diverse range of fans. Elton John's recording of this song incorporates the elements of the Philly Sound.

I always figured Elton John was the only person who could've ever done this song justice. I just listened to this Hall and Oates version for the first time, and it's not bad. Of course, it's not even close to as good as the original EJ version, but it's ok. At least they didn't destroy it like probably anybody else would've done.

I'd go as far as to say that I think the chords in this make it the better version, I love the original but...…. this pushes it. The laid back beat - great sound of Philadelphia!!

Maybe you have to be gay to properly sing this song. It sounded pretty good, I can’t rule them out being gay.
