When Laurens died, Hamilton was two days without talking to anyone, not even his wife. After that he closed himself to everyone and couldn’t easily make friends, also, he never talked about John Laurens again since it hurted him so much to remember his death. Eliza (who never got to meet Laurens) got really worried about her husband’s situation, but after she found and read the letters, she was happy for not hearing about John Laurens after his death.

2. It was not real. Like I said, there is not even enough evidence to support this. Not to mention that it would have been nearly impossible for them to be in a relationship because that was not allowed back then.
3. It is not cute. It is actually rather annoying seeing people ship them and spread false information without any real evidence to back it up. It is also annoying because they feel the need to shove it down everyone else's throats. Also, it is somewhat disrespectful to ship real people who had real lives.
@@Chloeee182 I'm only saying that the letters are not enough evidence since, despite what you may believe, they were quite common. A man saying they loved their friend wasn't at all unusual. Also, I'm not angry about people speculating if they actually have evidence. I am more annoyed at the people who are spreading false information by saying that Hamilton and Laurens had some kind of affair without any real evidence to back it up.
@@Chloeee182 I did, in fact, watch this video. I watched it before I even scrolled down to the comments. However, I will admit that it has been a month since I last watched it so I don't remember every single thing that was said. You do bring up good points, and I am even willing to believe that they deeply cared for each other more than what was considered to be normal. Hamilton was very close to Laurens and also Lafayette. I will not, however, believe that they had an affair like many people like to say. Many times I have heard people say, "They definitely had an affair, this proves it" or even, "He loved Laurens more than Eliza". The last one is the worst, in my opinion. Honestly, my main problem is when people rely on the musical more than evidence and then go around shoving their ship down everyone's throats. I don't get annoyed by everyone who disagrees with me. For example, I'm not annoyed or frustrated with you or this discussion at all. In fact, I find this conversation to be interesting.
As for Hamilton and Angelica, I will admit, I have wondered if they ever had an affair. After some research, I personally don't think anything happened between them. Eliza saw the letters Hamilton and Angelica wrote to each other. She even added a few lines to the ones Hamilton sent to Angelica, suggesting that Hamilton most likely had nothing to hide from her. Hamilton didn't do a great job hiding his affair with Maria Reynolds. He met with her husband in public and wrote letters to both of them in what was clearly his own handwriting. I feel like there would be some kind of evidence if something was going on between Hamilton and Angelica.

Many people were homosexual in the 1700’s there’s the same amount of homosexual people as there were in the 1700’s but back then it was probably shoved to the side and less known due to social standards and less education of it. Wondering if there was a romantic relationship between historical figures isn’t disrespectful. We want to know what we can about our history and if figuring out our founding fathers romantic interest helps, it helps. Many historians have came to the conclusion of a homosexual relationship between John laurens and Hamilton. There is too much evidence to ignore at this point and personally, I find it nice to know that some of the most important people in our history were part of the lgbtq+ community. Sexuality isn’t a choice now so it wouldn’t have been a choice then. It wasn’t uncommon for men and women to be forced into marriages together due to family or societal pressures. So even though both ended up married, they both displayed a lack of interest in their mistresses.

As mentioned in the video, at the top of the letter, the line "I must not publish the whole of this" has been pencilled in. John Church Hamilton was working on publishing all of Alexander Hamilton's works, so it would make sense for him to leave a note to not publish the whole letter. In his book "The Life Of Alexander Hamilton", only the opening three paragraphs and the postscript are shown (all the parts about discovering that Laurens had a wife and child, and thus the majority of the inappropriate lines, including the censored five words, were omitted). The September 16, 1780 letter where Hamilton invites Laurens "to be witness to the final consummation" (probably most known for the line: "In spite of Schuyler's black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now.") was also omitted in its entirety. While it could be argued that he omitted this letter as it rather explicitly states for Laurens to not kill himself ("have recourse, neither to the dagger, nor to the poisoned bowl, nor to the rope."), this argument doesn't entirely hold up on its own considering John Church Hamilton later somewhat acknowledges Laurens' self-destructive (and seemingly suicidal) thoughts (see pages 391 and 392: "While to others [John Laurens'] heart was all kindness and benevolence, he was unjust only to himself; and while the world saw him graced with every virtue, he was still aspiring to some higher excellence, -an ideal perfection, which is denied to our nature, and exists only in the warm conceptions of a mind deeply tinged with romance. Nothing can more fully express this inward struggle for superior excellence, than his letter to Hamilton, and the latter's elegant rebuke [...] [Alexander Hamilton] knew the deep wound [John Laurens] had received at an early period of his life, and that there was that upon his memory which made the latest moment the most desired of his existence").
Interestingly enough, despite censoring the Hamilton/Laurens correspondence, he described Laurens to be "the individual who held the first place in Hamilton's affections" and even goes as far as to say "In the intercourse of these martial youths, there was a deep fondness of friendship, which approached the tenderness of feminine attachment."
I think the reason people often associate John Church Hamilton's name with Laurens is because later in his life, John Church Hamilton went on to name his youngest son Laurens Hamilton (likely after John Laurens; the guy seems to have been a fan, looking at pages 389 - 392 of the book mentioned above), but his own name was indeed after Angelica Schuyler Church's husband. There is always the possibility that Hamilton named him after both John Laurens and John Church, but there is no solid evidence to support this theory. Still, it is always a possibility.
