I think the word "underrated" is used too often, but Dennis DeYoung is definitely an underrated keyboard player.

From my days with the early Styx, I remember one cold winter evening when we ran cable from the 3rd floor recording studio down the stairs, out the door down a block or so to the St. James Cathedral where Dennis recorded the pipe organ for Father OSA. Also sang in the Plexiglass Toilet choir. Fun times. They have always been a great live music band.

Equinox their best album-- Every song is in my top ten.

      Agreed. My top ten:
      10. Heavy Metal Poisoning
      9. Rockin' the Paradise
      8. Lady
      7. Music Time
      6. Lonely People
      5. Mr. Roboto
      4. Mother Dear
      3. Suite Madame Blue
      2. Miss America
      1. Born for Adventure
Honorable mentions: Lonely Child, the rest of Equinox, Earl of Roseland, Double Life.
I am not a fan of Tommy Shaw's musical style (although Blue Collar Man & Crystal Ball are ok to hear once in awhile), but fortunately DDY and JY gave us some good tunes. I do not consider myself a true fan but the songs that I did mention I am really into, esp. the Equinox album.
I'm glad Pete mentioned so many songs - I did a deep dive listening to them last night and added about a dozen or so to my playlist. Good stuff !

Pieces of Eight is my favorite album But Lorelei is my favorite song. On a personal note, 1 of my closest friends growing up was a cousin of the Panozzo brothers. We went to watch them rehearse a couple times at the local civic center in a suburb of Chicago where we lived. We heard some of Grand illusion and Pieces of eight before it was ever on vinyl.

You have *Half Penny Two Penny* at number 9, as I do. A great track that rarely gets recognized.
And *Crystal Ball* at #3 also same as me...

My top ten, as of today. It has changed a lot over the years as I've changed.
    1) Castle Walls (Grand Illusion) - Styx's finest moment overall. Because of the medieval themes and lyrics, grandiose had never worked better for Styx.
    2) Queen of Spades (Pieces of 8) - In addition to what you already mentioned - the drums on this one are incredible. And that final instrumental passage is so epic and dark.
    3) Snowblind (Paradise Theatre) - amazing synthesizers and performance. Song never wears out its welcome. On a level with the Black Sabbath song of the same name.
    4) Father OSA (Styx II) - the beautiful acoustic guitar passages, the amazing church organ and the beastly twin guitars at the end. The mysterious and metphorical and philosophical lyrics. One of the most amazing prog songs nobody ever talks about. The drum parts are also phenomenal.
    5) I'm Okay (Pieces of 8) - Again, amazing church organ. I guess I have a soft spot for that instrument the way Dennis plays it. The lyrics about conformity and how to deal with it - one of the best thing Dennis ever wrote.
    6) Clair De Lune/Ballerina (Crystal Ball) - The melancholy in this song is like no other. Amazing keys and piano. And the guitar dueling at the end probably could only be compared with KK/Glenn from Judas Priest.
    7) Suite Madame Blue (Equinox) - if you don't start air-guitaring toward the end when it gets heavy there is something wrong with you.
    8) Just Get Through This Night (Kilroy) - masterpiece deep-cut and possibly my favorite thing Tommy ever did with Styx. And how many other songs can perfectly blend accordion, synthesizer, keyboard and piano?!
    9) Best Thing (Styx I) - song is just so damn heavy and punchy for it's time period. Probably the best example of Styx dynamics - every instrument in that song gets to shine and rock out.
    10) The Best of Times (Paradise Theatre) - the perfect power ballad, and still to this day has a charm all its own.
Honorable mention - the bundle of heavy songs from the Wooden Nickel days. Jonas Psalter, Serpent Is Rising, Man of Miracles, Young Man. Also Love Is the Ritual because of how catchy and commercial and modern it was for a 30-year old band people's jaws completely hit the floor. I mean to go from the Musictime flop to that - damn.

  • @crusheverything4449
    @crusheverything4449 5 лет назад +7

    10. Born For Adventure
    9. Claire de Lune/Ballerina
    8. Queen Of Spades
    7. Lights
    6. Love In The Midnight
    5. Boat On The River
    4. Renegade
    3. Blue Collar Man
    2. Man In The Wilderness
    1. Crystal Ball
As you can see, I lean toward Tommy’s stuff, but this band has a wealth of great material, a lot of which pre-dates Shaw. I don’t want to start up The Big Debate (plenty of that elsewhere), but it’s a shame the band can’t patch things up because the combination of Tommy and Dennis’ voices is really something special and they both sound pretty much the same as when Tommy first joined, which is remarkable!

I totally agree -Queen of Spades is my favorite Styx song. I have all their albums . The first few being on Wooden Nickel Label.. It's so hard to rank songs of bands that have so many good songs. Good list , by the way.

So hard to chose. I was a Sophomore in High School when 'Edge Of The Century' was released. I liked Styx, but i did not become a full blown fan until then. My. Jr year my Show Choir sang "Show Me The Way", so that album among a few others was in my DNA that year, ironically Damn Yankees was too... but i digress. So my top 10 is different than most as i am a latter day Styx fan. I love the older stuff but it was the new albums that i fell in love with after EoTC. So here is my Top 10
    10. Crystal Ball
    9. Show Me the Way
    8. Grand Illusion
    7. Queen of Spades
    6. Paradise
    5. One With Everything
    4. Radio Silence
    3. Love Is A Ritual
    2. For The Greater Good
    1. Blue Collar Man

How about Borrowed Time? I love those crushing chords
in the beginning. The whole "Cornerstone" album is uneven
It's like they began to make a hard rock album but when Dennis brought in Babe they wrote softer songs to match it.
    Cheers!

Styx gets a lot of flak (as does Journey, which comes to mind) but as stated, they are a great band that mix elements of Prog, hard rock, Pop, with great song writing and vocals.

    • @alrivers2297
      @alrivers2297 5 лет назад +6

You can add Foreigner to the list of good bands that have gotten flak. They were accused of being the epitome of corporate rock in the late 70's. But just like Styx and Journey they just have a lot of good songs that have stood the test of time.

@Christopher Bingham I’m always surprised, especially since Styx and Kansas aren’t really arena rock. Kansas was very much a symphonic Prog band in the mold of Yes, Genesis, and ELP (at least until Audio-Visions), and Styx is a great example of Crossover Prog during the seventies as well as the latest album.

When you said "Queen of Spades" my jaw dropped and I had to rewind. After hearing Renegade and Blue Collar Man, both incredible songs of course, I wasn't expecting Queen of Spades. Every list I see never puts it in the top, much less at #1! After hearing you say it for the second time I instantly subscribed. An not just Queen of Spades, but seeing Man of Miracles get a proper mention is amazing. Absolutely amazing list, you have incredible music taste.

This one is tough. Styx has so damn many great songs. I like your list, but I would've taken out Renegade and replaced it with Pieces Of Eight and then moved Pieces of Eight to #1. I also would've somehow fit This Old Man somewhere in the top ten.

While I didn't really care for most of the DeYoung ballad songs (Babe, Show Me the Way, Don't Let it End, etc.), I actually really like the Best of Times. Did a vocal cover of it, though I'm reluctant to post it due to difficulty nailing the two high notes at the end.

Mother Dear from Equinox was lead sung by Dennis and John Curulewski. He was the one that left after the album and penned and sung several tracks from the first four albums. Also, the organ used in "I'm Okay" from Pieces of Eight was from St. James Cathedral in Chicago.
