What I am not sure I understand is why you had to make a frame first? Why couldn't the doors just be attached the shelves? I Really want to try this. I have a wood cutter but don't ubderstand the frame part

You could definitely attach the doors right into the wall, but I think they did a frame to make it look more like a built in vs having doors attached to the wall out of nowhere. If you look at a basic kitchen cabinet, most have frames like this. I think that was the purpose.
