    Hey! Love your RUclips channel, thank you so much for the invaluable advice!
    I recently watched a video about sterilising compost... After I'd planted my peppers... DOH! I've noticed some white kind of fluffy light growth on the compost. Do I need to repot into sterilised compost or is it unlikely to cause any harm?
    I planted the seeds 28th Dec, and they've been potted up into 7" pots. They aren't ready to go up a size yet, and I'm worried it'll do more harm than good disturbing them just now.
    Ive got them on a windowsil with lights too, im in Durham, north east Uk so lightnis a bit hit and miss. They dont seem to be growing much. They look way behind yours!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад +1

      yay you made it :D
      Hmmm ok, remembering I can't see what's happening or watch your plants growing so I can only give possible things that might be the case and you'll have to kinda make decisions based on what you know of your situation but... potentially, yes, white fluffy stuff on the soil surface COULD be a mould... but do a wee check cause if it's white strings..... that is most likely just that the roots are too near the surface. To be fair that usually happens more frequently with broadcast sown small seeds, but just in case.
      It is a difficult one to make a decision on about if you should pot them on into new soil... thing is, if it is a mould, it'll be through the soil, not just on the surface so it will be on the roots too and so potting on won't get rid of it completely. It may be better to try to. make sure you don't give it the environment it wants. So making sure the soil isn't wet all the time, making sure there's plenty of air flow, etc
      In terms of how big your plants are... don't get too caught up on comparing. There are so many things that determine how quickly your plants grow and remember, taller doesn't mean healthier.
      So yours could be slower to grow than mine because my environment for them is better, maybe better light (mine are strong grow lights), in a very warm room. Maybe yours took longer to germinate so actually your plants are younger than mine? Or are you using the same potting mix ratios as me? Does mine have more nutrition (I don't fertilise seedlings and small plants). I know at least 2 people who have kept using seed starting mix which isn't nutritious and basically their little plants weren't getting enough goodness from the mix to encourage growth.
      But basically, try not to worry too much... remember gardening is meant to be fun :D
      Edit: Jo I just saw your video clip :( That's mould I'm afraid)

      @@eliandkate thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking time to answer in such depth!
      I'm on sterilising my potting mix now so will try repotting then. Would I be best trying to wash the current soil off the roots gently? Or just knock as much off as I can and hope for the best? From the short I posted, would you say repot in to the same size? Or go up or down?
      Haha, so right about it meant to be fun, I absolutely love it. I just want to get it right. I'm not usually so fussy over anything else, but with these needing a longer growing season I panicked a bit haha!
      Thanks again, I really do appreciate your time!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад +1

      hmmmm don't go mad trying to wash things cause at this point the plants really are delicate, just try to dislodge as much as you can.
      Stick with that pot size but try not to over water and make sure you are using potting mix and not seed starting mix :D
      As a wee aside... keep an eye on your lights, some of the leaf tips looked a little burned... could be the lights are too close, or if you are fertilising it could be that... just watch out :D

    I have an excess of tomatoes AND peppers, so will soon have to make some hard choices about culling, or giving some away. Given the choice, what ratio of space would you give to peppers over tomatoes in the greenhouse, assuming they need equal pot sizes? Which gives the most valuable crop per square foot?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  4 месяца назад

      I decide based on what we want to eat. Usually we grow 4 of each in our greenhouse, different varieties will produce different amounts.

    I think an espresso machine has a future in my seed starting room. I also need a Dr Who shirt, but in 5x, those are hard to find. I havev been watching since Pertwee. The pepper plants you up potted are just slightly bigger than the size I take out to harden off. By then they are in 3 inch pots. A heat mat really helps with germination. Nice root development in your plants and it looks like the perfect time to move them up, no root circling. I do pinch early flowers, but never the center growth. If you do you may get more peppers, but they will be smaller if you change a tall plants growth to a bush. The peppers I grow tend to bush out on their own so I dont. I am adding banana peppers this year to go with bell and pepperoncini.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад

    Your Peppers are looking fantastic. I'm a little hesitant about upsizing my peppers right now even though a few of them are at that stage. I'm worried they'll get too big before I can just leave them outside because I usually only pot them up once before actually going into the garden. Plus, I lack the room inside to house all these Peppers that I started that have actually germinated, along with all my tomato plants, even though my tomato plants this year seem to be harder to germinate than the peppers were. In Fact, I haven't gotten the first germination from the tomato plants yet. It's only been a week, but usually I can germinate tomatoes in 3-4 days. This year the Hot Peppers germinated in 3 days and the the sweet peppers are lagging still.

    For some reason I have trouble with Jalapeno and Serano seedlings. They germinate and then die off after they get their first set of true leaves. My other varieties have done well, especially the Fresno peppers. I'm not sure what the problem is with the Jalapeno and Serano.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад

      Is the problem actually with the variety (as in it’s the same every year) or is it just that these are the seedlings that haven’t made it this year?
      The reason I ask is that it’s quite common to have issues with some seedlings but not all, early on they are seriously susceptible to all sorts and can be killed by pathogens )like damping off) without you even knowing there was a problem. Or a very small difference in the environment can cause problems like one seedling being nearer a window and being affected by the colder one that gets more of a draft, maybe from a door, and it dries out faster than the others.
      It might take a bit of investigation to see why there’s an issue ?

    My overwintered pepper (capsicum to us here in Australia)... is doing much better after I potted it on... I'm sure it has nothing to do with the weeds that were in the pot with it basically covering all it's roots ;) That one has a decent fruit forming... I'm not sure if it will get to full size but we shall see... I also have three in the veggie patch so it will be interesting to see how they do. I haven't added any extra nutrients though so I might add some extra compost to the greenhouse (overwintered) one and see how that goes.

      I always grow mine in quadgrows.
      Not an issue to have them sharing a reservoir, but just make sure to keep an eye on the levels as the tomatoes will use the water faster

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад +1

      You “could” but you might find it’s a bit small for sweet peppers as they are larger plants. They would still grow and be healthy but you prob wouldn’t get the same harvests levels you’d get in bigger pots. 😁

    Just start ghost and jalapeño megatons today. Normally don’t start till March, but those hots have long germination time which I tend to forget about. Most all the sweets say 8 weeks. We are unusually Big time warm this winter, But-we can get snow for quite awhile. Tuesday we will be a sweltering 65 and dive down to 15 at night with chance of bad storms. That temp will Smash our historic high. By the weekend 70!😮. Holy heck, what will summer be? It has me worried as this weather can wreck outdoor plants with advanced growth that can’t take freezes.
    So I’m still aiming at June 1st to plant out unless I try and babysit a low tunnel. April 1st is 8 weeks and with a few more days for germination should be 3rd week of March to start sweets.
    If it remains this warm I may be able to heat the greenhouse early. Our lows are exceeding our normal highs for a majority of days. Yes, we all want longer growing season and smaller heat bills, but I’m worried we will lose fruit plants.
    Nice thorough step through on pepps.

    If there was any doubt that I'd rather have you and Kate for neighbors rather than the not so nice, utility stealing neighbors who are actually on the other side of my red fence, the Doctor Who shirt took care of it.
    So the big questions, who is your Doctor and who is your companion?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  7 месяцев назад +1

      my Dr is Tom Baker, Kate's is Jon Pertwee
      my companion is a difficult one... I used to be a massive Ace fan growing up, but these days... Donna
      Kate's companion is Donna too

    • @sarabelden7092
      @sarabelden7092 7 месяцев назад

      @@eliandkate my husband's is Tom Baker, mine are Paul McGann, even though I didn't love the movie I loved his take on the Doctor, David Tennant and Patrick Thornton. Patrick always reminds me of one of my grandpas. Living in the states we were limited on what Doctor Who we could find. The channel it ran on here our tv had a hard time picking up so I didn't really get into Doctor Who until I was in my late teens, early 20's. I think I rented the movie 25 times one year. Lol when I started dating my husband we started watching what of the series he had from the beginning. I connected with Patrick Thornton almost from the first episode he was in. Then they relaunched about 6 months after we started dating with the 9th Doctor (but I didn't really ever connect with him). I'm convinced my husband decided I was worth the consideration of marriage when I bought him a DVD player that played region 2 and the 9th Doctor's first season for Christmas.
      We're both big Ace and Donna fans, but my husband's totally a Sarah Jane fan boy. Lol it's hard for me to pick a favorite companion. Most often it's whomever we are currently watching. We have almost all the available series on DVD or VHS tape.
      It's easier for me to pick which companions I didn't really like.
