    I remember renting and watching the DVD circa 2002. It was sufficiently weird that I watched the whole thing through in one go. Disturbing, yes, but impatient viewers should skip. Honestly it's worth watching it for the introductory scene alone.

    In my opinion.... (Don't hate) I believe that Begotten is one the most visually disturbing films of all time. This movie burns images into your mind. I haven't seen any other film anywhere that made me feel the way I did when I first saw Begotten. I was disturbed. I was beyond disturbed. I was horrified and frozen. For that reason, this movie is a fucking masterpiece. Some of the scenes just make you freeze. One part of your brain wants you to stop watching, and the other part is wondrously content.

    This movie was very interesting. It wasn't as scary as it was disturbing. This movie came straight from someones nightmares. He says, "The first fifteen minitues are the most intense" It's definitly.....odd, but I don't think it's the most intense. I'm not some "critic" or strong mind trying to "disect" this movie, but I thought it was so fantastic. No words needed to be spoken to keep my attention. My fiance said it was boring....I say, blah on him. It was fantastic as far as being quite disturbing and odd. I didn't expect much from this movie, I give it a 7 or 8 out of 10

    • @NicParsonsArt
      @NicParsonsArt  9 лет назад +2

      Hi Dawn.
      I think expectations play a huge role in the overall movie experience. There is definitely a downside to researching movies. I expected a lot from Begotten when I first watched it, which is unfortunate. The fact that you were able to go into it with low expectations ultimately helped you enjoy it in my opinion.
      Cheers!

    Genre is a tough call on this one. If you stuck to the mainstream, video store categories, I'd probably put it in Drama. Otherwise, it wouldn't be difficult to think of some funky new category for this type of movie.

    You gave this 6/10 for disturbance. Could you share what you to believe to be the most disturbing films or footage you're aware of? Things that are more of an 8/9/10 out of 10? I was given the impression begotten would be more disturbing than you make it out to be. I haven't seen it yet but I will watch it. I'm hoping to create something that isn't just jump-scare horror but more uncomfortable and disturbing style horror. Something that would make people consider not watching any further without resorting to cliche gore or distasteful acts like murder/rape etc. So I'm looking for inspiration. And let's face it. Hollywood is useless at that sort of thing.

    • @dawntucker4979
      @dawntucker4979 9 лет назад +2

      Yes ^^^ I usually only want to watch nothing but horror, but eveything is now this found video crap, or jump scare. Nothing truly terrifying. Begotten wasn't as much scary as it is just down right disturbing. I could watch more movies like this. This movie is something I feel I will always remember, and that's what I truly want from horror/ disturbing arts.

    the New French Extremity genre was one I ventured into shortly after watching some surreal experimental films the likes of Begotten, Lucifer Rising, The Fruit Of Paradis, THE ZERO YEARS, Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain and so on
    some really fun gory/ visceral, gritty and often very real feeling New French Extremity body horror I would definitely recommend would be: Martyrs(2008), Inside (À l'intérieur) Trouble Every Day (2001), (2007), Baise-moi (2000) and Amer (2009)
    PS Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising is a direct and GREAT variant/ correlation to this film

    If this film is a 6, and i'd give it a 9 out of 10 for disturbing-ness.
    And to put that in some kind of context A Serbian Film i'd score about a 6/10.
    As this film as you say just has a kind of a dread, and an ominous feeling that i've never seen, watching this film ive experienced things that i have never experienced watching film before. Maybe the only other time ive experienced something similar was watching Funny Games, but obviously that film isn't that scary or anything, but it is good.
    So what would you give a 10/10?
    And i mean like a proper film!
    Not just a real video of real violence that you might have seen online. ("2 girls 1 cup" doesn't count :o) )
    PS The Babadook is a new australian horror thats really great, and really scary, but its not like... Super shocking or anything.

    • @NicParsonsArt
      @NicParsonsArt  9 лет назад

      Hey there. First, thanks for watching!
      Serbian Film is great at pushing the boundaries of conventional cinema, but does so in a way that is so over-the-top, it's hard to take it seriously. I'd argue that much of it is eye candy for gore-hounds.
      Funny Games has always and will always disturb me. It's a review I desperately want to do, but it needs to be perfect. Hopefully soon.
      I plan to continue my disturbing movies series, so check back for new content and recommendations.

      Okay, make a horror film which William Friedkin finds terrifying. Which he puts up there with Psycho, Alien, and Diabolique.
      Very good company.
      The fact is, its scary. Its atmospheric and it just works! On every single level it works as a horror film.

      A 10/10 is hard to come by. Even when it does happen, you become desensitized to it. So the next time you watch it, it turns into a 9/10. I can think of only a couple movies that hold their disturbing value. I'll review them soon.

    @mathewbleasdale-clews4825 9 лет назад +1

    Well, I watched it. Or rather I tried to. I got half way and ended up skipping through the rest. I concur with this review mostly, although I'd say 6/10 for disturbance was generous. I'd wouldn't give it more than 5/10. Scene 1 is certainly up there with being very bizarre and discomforting, but beyond that it loses steam. Considering what this film is meant to be, it deserves credit, but I ended up feeling like the emotional ride the creators tried to produce here was given in reverse. It doesn't go well when a film feels like it's given you it's best in the first scene and left you hoping that the film will build on that, instead I kept checking the time left and becoming more disappointed as it went on. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but if anyone comes to this hoping for a decent if not memorable film with unusual qualities, just don't expect to be propelled beyond what you feel or see in the first scene. This is certainly one for those who have a very abstract love of film, because there is no crescendo of emotion created through watching this film in my view; you'll need to appreciate each scene individually rather than the film as a whole in order to feel like it was worth your time.

    • @NicParsonsArt
      @NicParsonsArt  9 лет назад

      Hey there!
      I can definitely agree that the first scene is the films most triumphant in regards to anything disturbing. Overall, the film's value comes from its artistic surrealism. However, there were moments when I, too, was checking my watch.
      As for some recommendations, it's a very broad sub-genre. I don't really follow exploitation movies, so my suggestions would usually come from films with a budget of over $1000. :)
      You should try:
      -Grotesque (Japanese)
      -The Girl Next Door (not the comedy)
      -A Serbian Film
      Let me know what you think!

      The official releases, on vhs and dvd, are very long out of print. Viewing the movie is not difficult, although viewing it online, especially youtube, is always going to be a very poor reproduction of the film's actual aesthetic. If you try to obtain an actual copy of the movie, you will either have a difficult time finding one out in any store, or you will probably pay more than $50 on ebay. You must be very unaware of any collectors market and the reasons why demand and supply cause prices to go up.

    • @bem1942
      @bem1942 7 лет назад

      Get Real have you seen how poor the quality of this movie is just due to the style of the film? the sound quality and picture will be shit no matter if you got it on vhs or not. what i said has nothing to do with not knowing what demand and supply is. I just said its easy to find because he said it was hard to find.(excluding a physical copy)
