I remember Marilyn Manson talking about how he was heavily inspired by this film and even got the director of the movie to do a couple of his music videos back in 1996-1997.

I think if it had a different theme or story, it would've been a cool idea.

I think it worked perfectly fine…. Theme kinda goes with what it was doing….

I have to agree with you. I loved it. I also love the synchronicity video with Begotten and Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar. It seems to really flow really nice with the film

I like it best with no music, just the crickets, or the ocean. It adds to the atmosphere, and makes it feel more like a German Expressionist film from the ‘20s, which I’m a big fan of. I’m glad you liked it, I know it’s not a film for everyone

I wasn't a huge fan of this film, though i may give it a second watch. I will agree with you that it feels like a art film.

Definitely an art/experiment film... WITHOUT THE PRETENTIOUSNESS!!! I absolutely loved it

I saw this film 12 years ago, i was alone, i wasn't particularly a fan of films with no type of focus of story or films that are weird for the sake of being weird, but i could see when watching it that it was a cool, eerie, surreal and something that was different.
While watching it, i got the feeling that the movie was not real or that i stumbled upon something that i wasn't suppose to be watching. I totally agree with you man.
Seeing that its been years since i watched it, i want to revisit it so i could get the same insight that you got from it. I got the stylish approach that the director was influnced by the stories that HP Lovecraft might of written in the style of like "The Tomb" or "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" or something like "The Temple". Maybe im reaching.
I could see the similarities that you sort of shared with the movie Mother, although i was not a fan of the "babies first symbolism" approach that the movie presented, the director did not understand what the the word subtle meant. I think Begotten contains better understanding of metaphoric meanings and symbolism, plus it being conveyed in as a silent film(sort of).
I can tell you that this is the best review of this film that i've seen on youtube, being there are so few on here. You also got me seeing the philosophical view points of the story.
Do you know if this is a well known movie between horror fans or is this a forgotten cult movie that only few people know about?
I'm only asking because i picked this up more than a decadeago at a flea market and the copy i got looked more "bootlegged" than the one you have.lol
    Thanks man👍

Thank you for saying that! I appreciate that!!! I think Lovecraft, though I’m a fan as well, is a reach, I do know, because I read up on it for the review, that the philosophy aspects were an inspiration to Merhige. It’s considered a ‘cult’ film, but judging by its availability and lack of reviews, it’s forgotten :/ which is a shame :(
I’m glad you enjoyed the film and my review! And that you found it as insightful as you did! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

It’s very well received! Hard to find, it’s not really a forgotten gem, but I don’t think it’s as talked about. Nowadays I think people just call it ‘pretentious’, which I can see, but then they kiss Ari Aster’s ass and pleasure themselves to Midsommar.... And THIS is pretentious?
A lot of people say ‘no story’ or ‘weird for weirds sake’, about this and Eraserhead, but both have a plot, although thin, but a plot. And the weirdness serves a purpose, theyre experimental. I was able to watch them both and get them, I LOVE both. My favorite part of this was HOW WELL the ‘20s silent, German expressionist aesthetic was done!

Idk… I think people want to appear more artsy and cerebral than they really are when they pretend that understood this movie, let alone understood it. With no dialogue and nearly impossible to discern visuals, you are just watching grainy, weird figures moving in strange jerky motions. Good for a Marilyn Manson video but terrible for a movie.

I mean… I followed it. Pretty easy to grasp. I’m not pretending. I think people like to appear more cerebral by telling people they’re wrong when they didn’t understand something
