My biggest problem is the one time that I had to surrender a cat to the SPCA they charged me. I get that they have fees they need to cover, but to me that's a huge barrier in surrendering an animal, and partially why people are surrendering them in boxes outside shelters.

Thank you for caring, Vanessa! As a caregiver for a neighbor, I had to take their little kitty in to be shaved. It is true that sometimes people do not understand a situation. My neighbor/client is a wheelchair user and does not have the manual dexterity to groom the cat, and the cat is older and less able to groom itself. Because the person could not afford to have the cat groomed, I paid for it myself, and the cat is now a lot more comfortable. Also, having been shaved down, the cat is better able to groom, and also to be brushed.
The agency I work with said they would not reimburse me for the work, because it is not in my job description, but to me, caring for my neighbor means keeping everything in the house clean and in order, and that includes Kitty! It's a labor of love for me.

I think George was happy-licking his paws. He was inspired to look after himself because someone was helping him with his very discouraging mats. When my cat got old and got poop on his butt but couldn't clean it off himself anymore, I'd get a warm, wet cloth and wipe it for him, and he'd go from looking utterly depressed and lackadaisical to purring and happy and licking his paws right away. Kitties like to be clean and are depressed when they're dirty and can't do anything about it.

My freshman year of high school I met a stray cat who was covered in matted fur. I had just lost my two cats due to some poor decisions of the adults in my life. I regularly spent time on my porch with him, and every day I would make a little bit of progress cutting the matted fur off of his body. Even though he was a little uncomfortable with the process, and I only had a pair of kitchen scissors, he kept coming back. I'm so happy that I eventually got to see him look like a normal cat. In such a time of hardship for me, helping him was one of few things that brought me joy. Watching this video reminded me of him. I hope that wherever he is, someone is taking care of him.

Didn't really want to do this on day zero of my relationship with him but i couldn't leave him in that condition, think i was more upset after it all as it was distressing the amount of fleas he had. As someone who had their friends in bad conditions, definitely can see why some people leave their animals like this.
I've had to care for a horse who've been neglected because of his owners disability. He left everything for his daughter, yet she didn't attend all he asked for, which was actually not much, and we ended up with a severely underweight guy on out hands.
I don't even know how those two survived. The horse - horrible condition. Infection, shap teeth which scratched his cheek on the inside, patchy mane, bald spots from matting on his feet. The guy - bad fall down the stairs, which was caused by a broken step. He flew from the second floor, hitting the ground with his neck.
Let me tell you, he was FURIOUS upon seeing his friend like this. I don't blame the guy for putting her out of his will. If she can't even feed and water a horse, what is she's going to do with her poor dad if he's going to get worse?
He still recovered tho. I don't even want to imagine the poor stallion's feelings during all of this 😅

Thank you! Someone recently posted a story about a dog who had been put up for adoption after the family had a baby. People were all over this family, how they couldn’t be trusted with a kid if they would rehome their dog.
I knew a couple who had to rehome their dog after baby came. Baby and mom both had severe complications during labour and delivery. Mom took months to get better, baby will never fully recover. Overwhelmed dad was trying to do for his wife and new baby and after awhile it became apparent that this family simply didn’t have the time or energy for the dog anymore. He wasn’t receiving the love, time, energy and attention he deserved and they knew it just wasn’t going to go back to the way things had been.
So they made the hard decision and sought a new home for their beloved pet. Because it’s what was right for all of them.
Sometimes life happens. It doesn’t mean these pets aren’t loved.

It's wild because people will get on the family for rehoming the dog they can no longer take care of but they'll also get on them for not rehoming the dog they can no longer take care of. In my opinion you just need to do the best thing for everyone involved and there's no one solution that works for everyone. It might be rehoming, someone looking after the pet temporarily, someone coming into the household regularly to do exercising/grooming/etc, putting the pet in a kennel for 1-2 days a week when you're most busy until you get through the crisis (ideally a really good kennel so it's like a little vacation they enjoy)... Some of these also require more money than others and as much as we don't like it that's going to be a big factor as well.

There's certainly cases like that. there's a hell of a lot more cases of "We KNEW we were going to have a child and got an animal that we also knew we'd toss aside as soon as we had a baby", and other such terrible shit. The majority of cases are people just tossing animals aside because they're tired of them. No, it might not reflect on how they care for a human baby, but it doesn't mean they're not bad people.

    • @dont_harsh_my_mellow
      @dont_harsh_my_mellow 11 месяцев назад +131

Some ppl get furious if a family won’t treat their pet like an actual child when the reality is that the pet doesn’t take precedence to a human baby. Idk why but we have taken up a mentality of treating animals as actual equivalent of children and have devalued children in society and wonder why they’re coming out so poorly behaved.
We need to get a single thing straight and that is that at the end of the day, if a family continues to have a pet around and treat them poorly or neglect them, they should either rehome their pet temporarily until they can care for them better or permanently rehome. Wow. 😣

It's also important to be kind in these situations, cause if they expect to be shamed for not taking care of their animal, while they already feel ashamed of it, they might just never take the animal to get shaved. I'm still trying to convince my aunt to get her dog shaved and she's considering pretending to have found her on the streets...

do you think some empathetic videos like this one could help? The Kitten Lady has talked about animal hoards before and, like in this video, invited her watchers to understand that people are basically doing the best they can and lots of people could just use some assistance to get things in order again. Like, it's not like the carers are failures or "bad" people - sometimes life snowballs :(

You have her ticket to a veterinarian's office that does grooming. Sadly we lost our office that was fabulous the old guys retired during COVID and the new ones destroyed the business so that it literally went under about a year ago. It did such wonderful grooming never judgmental etc. We do have Petco now in our little town and they hired the groomers but well you're in public bringing your animal that's in bad shape I've had a lot of people tell me since I got sick from COVID I haven't been well enough to really do what I used to do and my animals suffering from it. It doesn't matter find someone who's kind also you can also see if there is a mobile groomer in your area They are really cool The animal doesn't feel so frightened because they don't have to leave home We have two of them in our area it's fabulous. I have them come to my place and do it That way my cats don't have to freak out and go in the car which they positively hate.

as an avid RUclips commenter and cat video watcher, I see a LOT of comments who are all just “for shame” “how could someone” “there’s a special place in hell for” and it drives me nuts! Of course people feel so ashamed when so many comments say that!
So one piece of advice for if you don’t want to feel so much shame to the point you’re a hermit, don’t read comments on videos about animals being rescued. Never!!!

I was afraid to take my dogs in for dental appointments because I had PTSD and was barely able to even care for myself, and the vet had no space for what might have led to that situation. I'm doing better and my dogs are doing better, I'm stubborn enough to keep going for my dog's sake even if the vet acts like I'm a bad person. But it IS discouraging for a lot of people, and just being gentle with owners encourages them to come back.

My mother had cats and dogs, but after her mental decline due to age, her dementia caused her to neglect her health and that of her usually beloved pets, which had to be taken from her.
This case reminds me of how awful the mats and skin were on her kitties and dogs. She always loved her cats and dogs, and I know she would've been upset with their condition, even more than her own if she was of sound mind.

When kitties get old, they often lose the raspyness of their tongues, which means they can't remove the loose hair as effectively. I had a shorthair and when she got around 15/17 she had to be brushed constantly because she could no longer groom herself well on her own. If these guys are both older, they could be grooming themselves and each other, but don't have raspy tongues to do it properly.

She is 12-13 years old, she's plump, and usually very friendly. But her fur is bad this year. We have a good groomer for our dog and I hope she can do equally well for this cat.

Long haired cats don't shed properly sometimes, especially if they are elderly. Sometimes they can't handle the hot weather. Good, reasons for shaving. The same thing goes for dogs with thick/long coats. We have had both in this family. The animals usually appreciate the relief they feel.

My late Muriel did get ingrown claws when she got old. It was always really difficult to clip her claws even when she was young, but later when she started to have her claws growing too thick and long it hurt her to have them clipped.
I did my best but I am alone and it was so hard to keep her claws trimmed. I had too little money to bring her to the vet and she was so terrified that she would urinate on the way - except for the last time when I had to bring her to be euthanized. She was so, so calm that day. I was a wreck, but she was an angel.😢😢😢
I had never heard of the happy hoodie until I started to watch this channel. I will try it on my Nancy who rips me in narrow shreds if I try to clip her claws.

Thank you for being considerate of some owners, Vanessa. When I had a serious bout of illness, I couldn't take my dog and cat to the groomers, the park, or make my dog's food like he was used to. When I finally got better, the vet and groomer embarrassed me about being a terrible pet owner so much that I gave them to other families.
EDIT: Thank you guys for the support and I'm going to give some context to show why Vanessa's compassion meant a lot to me. Marco, my dog, I had since he was a puppy. Because he had stomach issues when I got him, I cooked a special diet for him until it cleared up. He always liked it, so I just continued to cook for him. When I got sick, I didn't have the energy to cook, so I bought dog food and treats. He started gaining weight because I was giving him the same amount of food as with the cooked food/treats. The vet screamed at me for Marco gaining weight. As for Chloe, my cat, the groomer was just pissed because she was used to Chloe coming every two weeks by the previous owner and that was a spot I wasn't filling. She was also annoyed that I didn't take Marco to her. (He's a greyhound. And she complained he was terrified of the dryer.) Chloe wasn't matted, her nails were longer than usual because I didn't do them as often as she did. Coming off of a potentially life threatening illness and not being in the best frame of mind, the berating made me feel like I was the world's worst pet owner. But when I think back, the vet was just a jerk and the groomer was greedy.

A lot of the time back matting can come from the cat hiding under a bed or a couch and the furniture rubs on ther back so much that it mats. I had a cat growing up that used to do that and it was near impossible to get any brushing done to prevent it, especially in the shedding season when the loose fur gets rolled up in the new.
