Speaking about languages, in every year ending with 7, a song in a country's official language wins
Very well observed ! 👌👏 I'm really impressed.
But germany won with a german ballad in '82
@@BirdyMisha Also true. Only exception though.
@@BirdyMisha 🤦🏻🤦🏻♂️ that's the year ending with 2.... open the eurovision winners list
@@lumiosepan Valid because that was the year ending with 2.... oh god I mean 2017, 2007, 1997, 1987, 1977, 1967, 1957, open the winners list and you'll see
This is the reason why I fell in love with Eurovision more than 20 years ago, cultures, music and lenguages 😍
Portugal hasn't "often preferred to sing in their native language". It literally never sent a single song fully in English in 50 years!
And they only won once. Most of the time, Portugal doesn’t even qualify for the grand final. Unfortunately Portuguese is not a popular language in Europe
@@myriam6101 To be fair most of the time their songs were not strong enough to qualify like 2012,2014,2015 or they were ruined by a bad staging like 2019 or well 2011 and 2006 happened as well...
They qualified in 2008-2010 and won in 2017 with quality songs so..
But they were really underrated in 2018 for being a host nation!
@@myriam6101 they have only one vixtory, but the biggest victory of the contest :)
@@srdjangavrilovic3232 I agree with you, In my opinion they were really underrated in 2019 too, the song was original and unique
Until this year that's will be the first song of Portugal fully in English with The Black Mamba - Love is on my side
Such a shame that the cultural aspect has diminished more and more over the years
When you waited for another episode of How to Eurovision but instead you get a Eurovision Explained episode... 😭
5 minutes about culture and don't talking about France or the French language, i'm impressed! 😂
Well said ! I commented exactly the same way and quoted several entries with traditional music and specific languages in the 90's.
Well there are 40+ countries, they cant really mention every language. Plus, french culture is well known, let others shine a bit
@@ihavenoidea_1 I don't think that so many people know how diverse the french culture is, especially the corsican part or the exotic rythmes of Antilles islands. In most of the videos of this channel, other countries are regularly honored but the Big Five is too often forgotten.
Bring back the pre 1999 language rule to the Eurovision Song Contest. Bring back the diversity to the contest
Thank you very much, Eurovision channel, for having forgotten France ! Quite extraordinary how a member of the Big Five can be ignored and bypassed ! Just three entries to refresh your memory :
- 1990 : Joëlle Ursull with the drummers of Antilles islands in "White and black blues"
- 1992 : Kali and the sound of Martinique's island and language in "Monté la riviè"
- 1993 : Patrick Fiori and the two mandoline players from Corsica islan in "Mama Corsica"
- 1996 : Dan Ar Braz and the musicians from Brittany in "Diwanit bugale".
These are brilliant examples of what diversity of cultures in one single country mean to contribute to the richness of Eurovision.
Also not a single mention when they spoke of countries who most of the time sing in their own language....
Like, WTF?
I found it a bit strange that the channel would neglect that.
And those entries are quite great (even if Diwanit Bugale took a bit of time). In addition, one can't forget 1991 amongst them!
@@anaiscardot6674 Yes, such a shame for this unforgivable oblivion ! Quelle honte pour cet oubli impardonnable !
@@EldaMengisto Of course, you're absolutely right ! Amina deserves a special tribute. Her song is even 30 years later still modern and full of originality. No one can sing like Amina did that year. Unforgettable memories !
I love when countries send entries in their language!
Universal values: Freedom, peace and culture. Thank you Eurovision! ❤️
Greece 1997... I'm glad it was here.
For those wondering, the song with the long horn was Swiss Lady - Switzerland 1977.
In the 90s, France sent songs in regional dialects such as « créole » from the French Caribbean island Martinique or even in Corsican with Patrick Fiori
Don't forget the Breton languaged song from 1996! France were so experimental in the 90's, not only with languages, but also with music genres and styles 😁
Breton too, with Dan Ar Braz
Poland 1994 😍😍😍
And where is Poland 2019?
Also props to all countries who choose to sing in their native language and show their culture more often!
THIS
Eurovision: let's speak about *every country has sang in its own language*
*Azerbaijan: sorry not sorry*
RiverDance will always be the most iconic cultural performance at Eurovision 🇮🇪
I love seeing ethnic elements in songs. I love Azerbaijan, Balkans and Israel for bringing such cool sounds 😍
And armenia, portugal...
Israel doesn't appear in this video 🤷
Azerbaijan? 🤔 maybe only 2009 and rest sound like Melodifestivalen reject
@@ggsin1528 Definitely ! 👍👌👏
Måns and Petra demonstrated culture better than any MCs ever could have. 😊
Man's and Petra demonstrated absolutely nothing to be honest.
@@stefanenglishman954 Of course they did ! How can you deny it ? Except if you don't want to hear and see the evidence.
They demonstrated the culture of Eurovision, not really the culture of Europe, hell i think the 2018 acts were more of a demonstration of culture and musical genres than 2016, also any 2000s act of esc had ethnic acts in their repertoire, it only stoped after 2013.
Unpopular opinion: Mans and Petra were overrated, i think the 2011 and 2014 hosts were better
@@vilkopoljak7370 You realize I was being facetious, don't you?
@@vilkopoljak7370 2011 ? In Baku ? How ridiculous ! The hosts had no charisma at all.
thank you so much for acknowledging and sort of showcasing that great georgian entry who ended last place...i love it til this day
I love how y’all have Petra and Måns at nearly every ep of this even though they don’t even meet each other at all🤣🤣
Iriao getting the attention they deserve is what I like to see
2:42 "Since the new Millenium..." 2:53 *Cuts to 1980* 🤣🤣
Tar, Balaban, Sarı Gəlin, Muğam və digərlərilə Azərbaycan ❤️🇦🇿
Georgia 2018 is really really underrated tbh....
as well as 2019
georgia 2016 was my winner
georgia 2016 is also very underrated
I love trying to sing along to both 2018 and 2019’s entries.
Serbia always bring quality and does not lose herself!
I missed the other 3 but I'm here now
With all the nice cultural elements that Turkey showed, Rimi Rimi Ley gets to represent Turkey in this video lol. I was expecitng ''Dinle'' from 1997
Riverdance is my most favourite interval act 😍
Prior to that year, the interval act was always a bit cringey and more like a tourism ad. Then Ireland smacked us with that, left us with jaws gaping, and every country has been trying to out-do them since. IMO, only "Love love peace peace" came close.
Thank you for mentioning Iriao ❤️🇬🇪
I want nothing more but for Eurovision to bring back the native language rule
1:50 Julio Iglesias
2:20 Mahmood
👍💯🔥💥💗
Justice for Iriao and "Sheni Gulistvis".
❤️🇬🇪💖🇬🇪❤️🇬🇪💖🇬🇪❤️🇬🇪💖🇬🇪
Not including Naviband only because noone gives a damn about Belarus? It was the first and only time our country finally sent a song in Belarusian, it was an important moment for Belarusian eurofans
Naviband was one of my favourites that year. That song is just so infectiously happy! I can't listen to it and not smile.
turkeys 1997 entry ethnic sound was the best in history
So true ! 👌🙏 A masterpiece of song with Şebnem Paker & Grup Ethnic performing "Dinle", who came 3rd that year.
Leylim ley RİMİ RİMİ LEY
Unpopular opinion: bring the language rule back. For at least 60% of the song like in JESC.
yes, I agree with this.
You know, it was removed for a reason. It gave english-speaking countries an advantage since english is commonly known language so it was easier to reach the viewers with their lyrics. It's not a coincidence that Ireland has the most 1st places and UK has the most 2nd places yet none of these countries has good results since the rule was lifted and other countries can sing in english too. Another proof - out of 21 winners since the rule was lifted, there's only two non-english winning songs (Serbia 2007 and Portugal 2017) and two part-english songs (Ukraine 2004 and 2016). It shows you in what direction the voters are inclined.
@@alam5055 You're right but that's sad :( although nowadays we have the ability to search for translations so it would be easier to understand the songs, for example, Italy has always sung in Italian and has achieved good results as well
Does Duncan's song have Dutch version? I don't think so.
Ala M but back then there were only juries. Nowadays it won’t be like that I think, anyway juries should reward songs in native languages rather than punish them.
I do miss countries singing in their native language(s). It's much more fun learning what the songs are about when they aren't in English.
Happy that "Rimi Rimi Ley" was included in the video.. it's been criminally underrated for years
Although I love new electronic songs, but I am not agains when countries show their cultures with the modern song!
Ukraine enters in the chat...
@@user-ng5fq8wl9g they were actually my 2020 winners
Eurovision should stop having the rule of choosing any language every year, but instead do this, e.g.:
2021: free choice
2022: national language(s)
2023: free choice
2024: national language(s)
With this, there's more room for bringing back different languages and cultures. :-)
To me Serbian is the most beautiful language in Europe
Love from Germany
This is pretty much the reason from why am i eurofan❤
Sertab Erener is the first winner with a "cultural" song i think. ❤️
I mean I love her too but, 1995 Norway?
@@ege-sucu1 Um yea but i think Norway 1995 just violin song. Violing is global instrument.
@@erenaygun4157 mm, it’s not? Did you research background of the song and instuments used in the song?
@@ege-sucu1 Oh ok
How about ireland in 1996 ?
*Eurovision nowadays it's not about CULTURE anymore, Eurovision today it's all about glamour, fashion, singing in broken English etc. EBU should bring the old language rule or like in the Junior Eurovision, half of the song to be in one of the national languages of the respective country and the other half in English.*
yes, preach THIS.
I'd prefer every country to have the freedom of sending whatever they want. Restricting them to just showcase their language and culture is very limiting and sad. Also, since we are talking about languages and culture, what about minorities? Implementing the "only native language" rule like in JESC would mean that countries can't sing in minority languages.
true
Fun fact: Serbia only sent songs in English thrice
@Gabriel Del Pino Coffey ok teacher
@realgabriel dc no thrice is correct
And it was a bad idea.
Georgia is my favourite country❤

No mention of France... Why ? 😅. In the 90', they bring songs about the diversity and use typical instruments... they sing every year in French (or French-English). But good video
