Yes, it was. When evaluating the entries some years ago, I realized that I only liked 10 entries out of the 23. The winning song from Estonia was out of those 10 songs I really liked. Indeed, I still think that France, Slovenia, Spain and very especially Greece should have won. This must be one of the most notable examples of an ESC won by the wrong entry, and I hope Estonians don't get me wrong. I love most of Estonian entries in ESC, but "Everybody" should have never ever won.

To me, a truly bad Eurovision year needs to have mostly bad songs (or at least mostly forgettable songs with some really bad stinkers) and poor/annoying hosts. And 2001 definitely has both. First of all, the random draw was abhorrent. While the songs from Spain onwards are actually at least decent (and some of them are actually pretty good), everything before is just plain terrible.
But h my god, the hosts manage to drag it down even more. The year 2000 didn't have much better songs, but it was hosted so much better, which makes me not mind it too much. And while I think Terry Wogan was a bitter old man without a single funny bone in his body who always tried to make everything about himself, this is the only year where I think he was right to do so as that distracted it from the easily dislikeable hosts.

2002 was worse in my opinion, and the fact that the most well known song from that year by far is the one that finished 17th and became a cult classic (obviously I'm talking about Greece's S.A.G.A.P.O), speaks volumes of how bad the contest was that year.

    • @PanosDCC
      @PanosDCC 29 дней назад

Absolutely correct, but since then that song has reached unbelievable heights of popularity, not necessarily all being good, it's a case of loving it or hatin' it, but if you look at the stats on RUclips, the Latvian winner reached like 900k views (and honestly the only thing I remember from that entry was that stripping gimmick they had), whereas many S.A.G.A.P.O videos clock millions of views and a few years ago Pringles ran a popular TV campaign here with that song and the man himself Michalis Rakintzis, so it's definitely a cult classic of the contest and literally the only thing worth noting from the 2002 contest.

What a funny way to tell the story of Eurovision 2001! Personally, I don't think that it's the definitive worst year ever (that honor goes to 2002, for having a rancid song quality), though it's not a year you would go back to often. France, Slovenia, Greece, and Denmark held up the entire year.
And I actually liked the couplets, hehe.

2001 was not the worst Eurovision (as far as songs go), but it did have one of the worst Eurovision winners ever. Over 20 years later, I still don't understand how that garbage "Everybody" won. I'm sorry, I can't be kind about it, it's a song whose appeal complete escapes me to this day, especially when there were perfectly strong and worthy would-be winners like "Energy", "Je N'Ai Que Mon Ame", "Die for You" and "Never Ever Let You Go" in the competition as well. But, as said, 2001 had its gems. In terms of the PRODUCTION however, good lord this was a s***show. The stage was awful and had no focal point to the design. The presenters and their rhyming were embarrassing. So were Aqua, in fact, as the interval act. Denmark would produce a much better Eurovision (with a much better winner!) in 2014, when I had the honor of being there.

But yet, the contest appears to be incredibly incompetent to make room for breakout mega stars.

I personally think 14 is a massive improvement with the winner, the Netherlands, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland and controversially Malta which I really enjoy with Armenia, Belarus, the host entry, Hungary, which tackles some quite strong subject matter, also being good and of course this is the year of the Ukrainian hamster wheel.

My least favourite contest of all time is 86 although 73 isn't great either. 86 has I think two maybe three songs I actually enjoy - Turkiye, Sweden and sort of Spain and Switzerland weren't bad and should have won. I think it has one of the worst winners of all time. The worst winner of all time IMO is 99 where another ABBA diluted rip off song won and mostly the songs were awful that year too except for Iceland, Croatia, Germany, Estonia and Belgium a bit. It has IMO the worst thing Norway ever sent and yes I know 78 exists at least that it's epically hilarious and deliberate trolling.
2001 might well be the worst year of the 00s though - 2002 is bad too but I think 2004 has enough great songs to save it. 2008 is in the running. 2006 - I love the winner and it was a much needed new genre to win, it has the beautiful Lelija, Tornero one of the best dance songs and a lot of genre diversity. It's a wild ride but I'm kinda there for it especially since I quite like wacky songs in general and I've always loved We Are the Winners in particular although the UK entry can get and stay in the bin.
2008 is a lowlight too although there is some good stuff that did not include the winner or IMO Greece - which to me illustrates that ESC fans will vote for any old tripe if it's got a pretty girl dancing and the staging works.

@@Satellite88 There's a channel called Groot who does rewatches on Twitch complete with votes including the semis. It revealed to me 2008 does have some great songs - Turkiye our winner, Portugal, Armenia - thanks Dadi Freyer for bringing that one to my attention, Ukraine, and even NQing Cyprus and Switzerland. It has the finest song ever to come stone dead last with Complice from San Marino a pretty decent rock song. Yes there are a lot of bad novelty songs although I do like Bosnia, Latvia, France and Belgium despite them being utterly bonkers and have a bit of a soft spot for Spain and weirdly enough the Azeri debut is one that country's favs for me (I mostly think Azerbaijan is as basic as hell at Eurovision) the winner is a triumph of local fame, staging and block voting over having a great song and any great originality and encouraging expression of a country's unique culture or expanding the genres of songs who win when even Sweden kinda did that with Euphoria.

    excellent video.
2001 has a special place in my heart as I was 9 at the time and listened to the album loads, but this commentary is hilarious and for so many of the acts (some are a bit too professional) it seems spot on ;D also Estonia winning it at the pub night makes perfect sense and the same goes for eurovision. they are not my personal winners but get way too much hate.

2001 was a definite low point, though my personal least favourite remains 1999- the loss of the orchestra was a real trauma and to my mind the single worst decision in the history of the contest- don't @ me.
I think the changes in the media landscape at the turn of the century in general were hurting the contest. Audiences for terrestrial television were dropping and the Internet, such a crucial part of the modern contest, was still very much in its infancy.
I will give DR credit for trying to hold the contest in a stadium 🏟- still the largest venue used in history- even if it really didn't work well in practice. Fun fact- the 38,000 tickets for the final sold out in under an hour- so there was enthusiasm in Denmark at least.
