  • Today we have a chat with Michael Gerken, running dive/photo tours in Chuuk (aka Truk) Lagoon Micronesia and also the Sand Tiger Shark Wrecks North Carolina. He is one of the best photographers in his genre that I’ve ever seen. He talks about Chuuk, diving, photography, and COVID downtime. Chuuk background: Feb 1944, this was the largest air attack ever. Often known as the Japanese Pearl Harbor, scores of Japanese ships were sunk in the allied attack on this fortification. The consequences of the attack made "Truk lagoon the biggest graveyard of ships in the world". This is a must-dive location.

Great video! I've had the pleasure to dive with both Jim and Mike, two divers that I really admire. I joined one of Mike's Rec expeditions to Chuuk in 2018 not knowing anyone else (except for Mike, who I had met on a dive in NC). He's right - once I dove Chuuk, I immediately started to plot my next opportunity to return. The wrecks were amazing and I really improved my photography skills on that trip. The Odyssey is the best option for diving Chuuk by far. An added benefit...I made some great friends during the week.

Ohhh, that's definitely a bucket list location! Looking at the depths on the schedules, that's definitely something I'd like to rack up some more experience and certifications for, though. I passed my GUE Fundies two weeks ago, so I'm on my way!
