  • Embark on a solo hiking adventure on the Nakasendo Trail in Japan, from Tsumago to Magome in the stunning Kiso Valley. Explore the historic Nakasendo way and experience the beauty of hiking in Japan! If you think Japan as all about the massive mega-cities and anime, you’d be wrong. Japan has some incredible back country, and you can easily access amazing walks and multi-day hikes. But you can also do seriously great one-day itineraries that not only take you out of the city into lovely countryside, but also throw you back in time into a Japan from the Edo period. It’s like entering a 400 year time tunnel. And the great news is that you can easily do this as a solo hiker too.
Today, I’m going to tell you all about the Nakasendo trail, how to get here, what to expect, and show you the sights and sounds of being in the Japanese countryside.
Footage filmed using iPhones (11 Pro Max + 13 Mini) and Insta360 Flow - the best smartphone gimbal I have used.

    Partial Transcript:
The Nakasendo Trail, literally the central mountain route, was a mountainous inland walking route through the Kiso Valley, that connected Edo (which is modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto back in the Edo period (1603-1868). The trail spanned 540 km (or 340 miles) and had 69 post towns for travelers to rest and recover.
But in just this short, well-preserved section of the Nakasendo trail - don’t worry, you’re not going to attempting the whole 540 kilometres of the old route - you could be excused for thinking you have taken a step back in time to the age of the samurai.
The part of the Kiso Road we're interested in is celebrated for its unspoiled green forests, clear streams, and secluded rural villages and farms that have been largely unaffected by modern development.
Nowadays, the original Nakasendo Trail is mostly lost or repurposed as modern roads. Parts of the original road in the Kiso Valley can still be seen today, with the most renowned stretch being from Magome-juku in Gifu Prefecture to Tsumago-juku in Nagano Prefecture. This little part of the trail is around 7.3 kilometers (4.5 miles) long and should take you about 4 hours to walk at a relaxed pace.

Yes, Magome to Tsumago is the way to go. I walked the trail in May this year, and felt sorry for the people coming from Tsumago. Some of them looked very hot and tired. I stayed in Nakatsugawa.

Good work. Yes, I couldn’t find any accommodation in Nagiso or Nakasugawa either, as it was Obon. And I was trying for weeks in advance. Still, it was a great walk. But I’d definitely do it from Magome to Tsumago if possible.

Thanks a ton! Really appreciate it - this was a new style for me, so I was a bit nervous about what people might think. Took a lot of work to pull together :)

@@TheTechPacker That's an intriguing idea... I'm heading to the States for the month of July, and when I get back it'll be too hot... Autumn (November) is the perfect time for hiking and visiting shrines and temples. My wife is from Osaka and we know a bunch of places to go. Let's talk in September or so. I'm retired and have plenty of time.
