  • On June 21, 1964, civil rights workers Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner were ambushed and shot dead by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi. Their deaths were dramatized in the 1988 film "Mississippi Burning." David Goodman, the brother of Andrew Goodman, reflects on the case that captured the nation's attention.

R.I.P Micheal Schwerner 1939-1964, James Chaney 1943-1964 and, Andrew Goodman 1943-1964. And may we remember that their efforts were not in vain as their deaths were followed by the passage of the Civil rights act a month later on July 2,1964 and the Voting rights act a year later on August 6,1965.

I was 10 years old in 1964. The murders were shocking then and they are still shocking today. I can't imagine the horror these 3 young men went through. And all because they believed in doing the right thing. My heart goes out to their families. Much has been accomplished in the fight against racial injustices since 1964 but we still have more to do. I think of the 3 civil rights workers and how their lives would have been if they had lived. May they rest in God's eternal kingdom.

    Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
    Song Notes
“Strange Fruit” is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by a white, Jewish high school teacher from the Bronx and a member of the Communist Party, Abel Meeropol.

He was just a kid that wanted to do the right thing. I just watched another video and it said that when they buried him in the sand after they shot him, he may have still been alive because they found sand in his lungs. My God. My all 3 three of these brave young men find the peace in the here after that this evil world did not give them. I'm so sad right now. So angry all over again..
