  • They say the Spanish authorities are making crossing the border a lengthy and difficult business. We'll see how things play out! Will it be a walk into Mordor or a Picnic laid out in a Sunny Atrium? See exactly how to cross from the British Gibraltar to Spain.
Helsinkipop is in the place and he's on the case.

As a Londoner I really appreciated your comment that “standing in a queue isn’t horrible- German V2s landing on London was horrible”. 👍🏻 People really need to toughen up and stop moaning about small issues.

Ehm, what? You could just walk through like that? No passport control? No baggage control? How does that comply with this being an outer Schengen border?

There is something not quite right with this video. We are shown massive queues and are told of a half hour wait. I will say that the frontier does seem especially busy on this day for pedestrians, even busier than at rush hour when all the workers who live in Spain are returning home after work, but I have never encountered a half hour queue for pedestrians. Strangely the frontier seems quite quiet as far as cars crossing are concerned, disproportionate to the very large numbers of people on foot. There can be long queues for cars sometimes even longer than half an hour if the Spanish customs are in a bad mood and searching all the cars, but not half hour queues for people on foot. Also, taking into account the fact that everybody seemed to be walking straight through without anybody checking anything, it is difficult to see a possible cause for such a queue to build up especially as we then see people simply walking straight through all the controls and not massive numbers of people either.
What is shown in this video is crossing from Gibraltar to Spain. I have crossed this border many times although not recently and have never seen those automated passport scanning gates. This is a new building and in the past it was normal to show the passport to a Spanish policemen standing at the frontier gate. With EU passports it was usually just the briefest of checks, it usually being only necessary to open the passport to the photo page hold it up so he could see it and keep walking. I would speculate that passports had already been shown at some point prior to entering this building and that these gates were recently installed and not yet in use.
The customs checks are more intense although those with no bags can normally walk straight through. Suitcases and large bags are normally put through a X ray machine while smaller bags and supermarket type plastic carrier bags are looked into mainly to check for duty free cigarettes purchased in Gibraltar. The customs checks exist because Gibraltar is not and never has been a member of the CUSTOMS union and Gibraltar is duty free.

@@StevenKeery It is not why there is that queue. The problem is that Spain dont want that the tobacco and drug from Gibraltar enter. And another problem is the polítical one.

Did you think this statement through before spewing onto us here ? Gibraltar is British, just as much as Ceuta and Melilla on the northern shores of Morocco's Mediterranean coast are Spanish. Infact those two enclaves on the African continent form the European Union's only land borders with Africa. Or u suggesting UK let's go of Gibraltar and Spain forgoes too its African annex !? 🤷🏾‍♂️
