- Y'all, when Normani tweeted in the summer of 2018 that she had her album title, I had no idea that we would have to wait 6 whole years to finally hear it. And to be honest, when she officially announced her album "Dopamine" in February of this year, I had zero expectations of it would actually come out, but here we are and I am still in disbelief that this moment has arrived. I am proud of Normani for overcoming all of her personal and label challenges to finally drop this freaking album. I will say my favorite songs would be the first 6 songs. Literally back to back to back with Big Boy, Still, All Yours, Lights On, Take my Time and Insomnia is -- chef's kiss.

Normani’s debut album is very Janet and Aaliyah coded, with a sprinkle of Brandy, and I like it. To me, it was solid. The album was sensual, anger, and just having fun. The only gripe I have is that Wild Side is almost three years old, and the album could have came out sooner. Tantrums and Insomnia are on repeat for me.
Yes, I can hear all of those inspirations in this project as well, and I think she did a great job at using their influence to craft her own sound. Also, the production is just so incredible to me. But I understand what you mean about Wild Side - it's just another reminder how this album should’ve came out years earlier.
Yessssss I explained to my friend the album is like if Aaliyah Beyoncé Rihanna and brandy and Janet with a hint of Ciara album had a baby
It’s NOT Aaliyah coded.
@@SideEyeee_nah, it is. Not the whole project, but some songs definitely give off Aaliyah's vibes.
Lmao literally
I think that not including the extended version of Wild Side is my biggest gripe about the album 🤣 that bridge is necessary
That extended version is incredible. Definitely a missed opportunity there
She delivered! That album good asf
She really did!! Hopefully, she promotes this album heavily because it deserves the recognition.
@@ashleykairayou completely ignored the song little secrets😮😢
No I briefly talked about it at 8:04 my friend 😊
@@ashleykaira oh, thanks 😊
Absolutely loving this album! Lights On is my favorite track for sure. I didn’t love Candy Paint as a single but the new version on the album clicks with me.
Lights On and Still just gets better and better with each listen. I also love that this album is pretty short. Anything over 15 tracks would have been excessive imo
Humbly, Normani popped her shh, i rock with this body of work. . Theres something for everyone. Issa real pop record. That deserve commercial push. Havent seen this since Rihanna.
Fav records - all dem. Lol even the singles.
This album passed the car test for me, and I agree it is a solid body of work for a debut. Hopefully, she gets on the festival circuit soon.
Candy Paint literally truned me away from listening to the album when it dropped. After waiting so long, that song just did not sell me. I'm glad I came back around the listening to the whole album though cuz there's about 8 songs on my rotation now. Happy to have an artist like Normani
That’s exactly how I felt initially. That song didn’t do the album any justice
Thank u for giving the girls a short but sweet review to the album
Oh yes my friend!!! Thank you so much for watching!
@@ashleykaira anytime i hope u review my ep when it drops
Absolutely!!!!!
The album from track 1-5 is absolutely perfect. Like I just cannot stop replaying that section. I wish Distance was in the top half of the album.
CandyPaint could’ve been a bonus track along with Wild Side on a deluxe album.
1:59 made perfect sense in the context of the album and wish it was a deep cut instead of a promo single.
The album had room for other songs that Normani scrapped and would’ve made perfect sense. I wish she had added Time Waster, Blue, Waiting For You and 1 On 1 on the album. Those songs would’ve elevated the album so much in my opinion.
This is a great review. Gotta love anyone who gives Normani her flowers.
Shoot.. Normani needs to add you to her team ASAP 😂😂
Thank you for watching!
When i tell you this album is timlesss and awesome 💯 ,,, im obsessed with it so very cleverly done and very unique ❤❤
‘Still’ has been on repeat for me. Overall, I can tell they took their time curating this record.
Thanks for watching!
Normani’s debut album 💿 encapsulates everything you love about the late 90s and 2000s Iconic Rnb Sonic landscape, the perfect Sonic Elixir, of Janet, Aaliyah and Bandy. I give it a Ten out of 10, you don’t have to skip a track just play it from start to finish. Perfection takes time🤘⭐️🎸🎶🎶🎶
I like the album's sonic cohesion, you can tell Normani and her producers had a clear vision with this era, though I hope she has the label support and budget to execute that vision with visuals/tours. As for the album itself, I do think the first half is very good, but after Insomnia, the remaining tracks don't really stand out (e.g. Grip, Distance, even like you feel, Candy Paint). I do hope she can achieve some level of commercial success with this record, but I do feel a lot of the general public has lost interest with only her core fanbase riding for her
We literally have the exact same thoughts! I 1000% agree!
The general public didn't lose interest.. Because the general public never really knew who she was. Some of you live on the internet and don't really know people in the real world. If you talk to people who don't tune so heavily into pop culture on social media, you will find out that the overwhelming majority of people don't know who Normani is. They know some of her songs and they know some songs that she's been on but they do not at all know her.
@@13579hee No, I do live in the real world, but I can see where you're coming from. Normani definitely has a proportionally stronger online presence than mass appeal, but I do think compared to her R&B peers (I'm thinking Chloe and Coco Jones), Normani has a relatively good appeal to the GP. She had crossover success with her collabs with Khalid and Sam Smith, and Fifth Harmony did have successful hits in the mid 2010s, plus Motivation and Wild Side did quite well with solid debuts on the charts, although I will admit her success is more concentrated in North America + other English-speaking countries. However, I do think this long wait for her debut album hurt her in terms of GP mass appeal, as shown by the performances of 1:59 and Candy Paint, both of which didn't make much noise outside social media. I do hope this era does pan out well for her though, at least enough to warrant her label to invest in a sophomore effort
I loved the album!
Me too! It’s getting better and better
Exceptional review..
Thank you so much for watching!
i hope ppl realize criticism is important so plz don't come at me ,but this album was all over the place ,not bad and some songs hit as you said ,but not as well made either ,especially not something you'd wait for 6 years for ,i hope she has better luck with the next one and that it doesn't take as much time
Those are also Sevyn's belts in the backgrounds of Distance... Actually she all over the backgrounds throughout the whole song
Wowow she ate that up
She’s pissing me off. Still isn’t releasing any visuals… I feel like she should have released 1:59 and even candy paint to keep the buzz going. and the nerve to say I’ll see y’all on tour at her release party. When will that be?
If there is not a video released by the end of this week, that tells me that she’s not serious. It’ll be a shame if her team drops the ball again by not keeping up the momentum with this project.
I feel like Little Secrets should have been the opening track… other than that… the album is excellent
The literal delusion. One of the most anticipated albums in 5 years? Big boy got like 10k streams in a day. That’s not anticipation. That’s getting dropped from your label type shit.
Well we’ve been saying it for years, gotta stop coming for other people and stream your own girls music. So sad. At least y’all got this mid album though
Maybe she wants to be dropped, its not like rca pays for her music videos. She might as well do independent.
big boy got almost 300k spotify streams first day alone so not sure where that number came from… she’s definitely not getting dropped when this album hasn’t even exhausted all of its promotional lanes (visuals, physical copies, performances), let’s remove the negative energy and root for her.
Nahh I don’t think she’ll get dropped. Some songs off of this might end up being sleeper hits, you never know. As long as Normani spends the rest of this year going hard with promotion, this album might have staying power on the charts and grow in sales/streams.
Exactly!!
going independent would be a much tougher route for her out the gate, but I hope the label has given her a decent budget for shoot some visuals.
