  • Aside from all of the discourse surrounding the Kendrick Lamar and Drake feud that is ongoing, another debate that was circulating around the platform X, formerly known as Twitter the last few days is the deliberation on whether SZA makes R&B music or not and if she is seen as an R&B artist. This debate, which is upsetting A LOT of people online stemmed from SZA's recent cover story with Dazed magazine. This discussion reminded me of other musicians who previously spoke on the consequences of being pigeonholed to the genre such as Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Whitney Houston, Kelis, Diana Ross, and Dionne Warwick.

    Here's my two cents: artists aren't upset with being labeled R&B. They're upset because they don't get the mainstream recognition that certain artists get. All R&B singers should be performing at all the award shows, talk shows, and the like. They should also be having billions of streams on streaming services and massive radio airplay. But they can't due to unfair industry politics. So that's why they're frustrated with being labeled R&B. All because they don't have a big machine behind them like other artists. Again this is just my two cents.

    Starting this video off with that Kelis clip was perfect. As someone who grew up on the school of Kelis, I feel like she’s often forgotten in these conversations when she paved the way for some of these more contemporary acts.

      She really is. She is true artists' artist and she have paved the way for a lot of artists and does not get her just due (even though Chloe Bailey gives her, her props).

    Its not the blackness they see as reductive and limiting. Its the idea that anyone can automatically determine what they think i need to be BECAUSE of my blackness. If you know your ancestors, you know your ancestors music is the root of EVERY genre of music. Not just rnb. Our ancestors didnt want us to be one thing. Period.

    Sza never been strictly R&B. Her music is alternative mixed with pop sprinkles with R&B. Her album SOS was very musically diverse. "Snooze", "The Weekend", Love Galore, "Hit Different" and "I Hate U" are her only songs that can be considered R&B. It's just like the group TLC. A lot of their biggest hits like "Unpretty" and "Waterfalls" aren't R&B.

      That's a good point. I think the confusion lies with most of SZA's fans became a fan of hers during the CTRL era, so a lot of people don't realize she's always had alt/pop/r&b elements in her music. Thank you for watching!

    Well I must be deaf. Cuz Frank and especially SZA, have made R&B/Trap&B music for a while now with the exception of a few songs here and there. This day and age is so interesting to me because artists like them will look at R&B so low brow but benefit from it at the same time especially when R&B/Pop stars still exist.

    • @ashleykaira
      @ashleykaira  4 месяца назад +1

      Not a lot of mainstream artists take pride in strictly R&B anymore and it’s pretty insane to me.

      @@ashleykaira which is crazy because it’s not like R&B singers can’t be considered Pop. “Pop” itself just means popular. So many “Pop” stars were also R&B back in the 80s,90s, and 2000s.

    I see both sides of the fence I understand what a lot of these black artists who feel racialized in genres vs their white peers but I do agree with alot of the Twitter users who critique sza as her and other black artists who say this comes off as elitist and looking at R&B and hip hop as low brow it’s like how can you complain about being racialized but then using that same racist language to distinct yourself from black genres. Not to mention for sza and Frank ocean their music is in the foundation of R&B yes they experiment with other genres and sounds but everything is under R&B influences that’s why I call them alternative R&B like don’t pick and choose for the approval of the same white people who are thd first to box you in, this argument works better for artists like Dev Haynes, FKA twigs, Rihanna, Bree runway etc.

    • @ashleykaira
      @ashleykaira  5 месяцев назад +4

      Yes, I totally understand the perceptive of the Twitter users because it just seems like we hear it so often with this generation of "R&B" artists and how they want to detach themselves from the genre. I don't understand the negative or restrictive aspects to it and why it might be seen as a bad thing. It really just makes me appreciate artists like H.E.R. and Muni Long who really live and breath R&B, and have no qualms being known for that specific sound.
      Thank you for watching!

      @@ashleykairaagreed like one of the Twitter comments said R&B is so multi-layered, diverse, and eclectic it can transform and experiment into different sounds and still keeps its musical trademarks similar to hip hop, like listening to teen pop music of Britney Spears, Christi’s Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, nsync you can instantly hear the R&B influences through and through underneath the umbrella of it being dance pop music,

    I think the only black artist if I’m not mistaken that I’ve seen never ever been considered a r&b artist or get nominated in that category is Rihanna

    • @ashleykaira

      The billboard awards Komi aged her for quite a few R&B categories but for the most part, she was nominated appropriately because she is purely a pop artist
