This song is so interesting to me. The singing off beat in the first, to the unsettling guitar riff that leads into the smooth beat drop. He put a lot of science into this song. The first makes your heart beat really fast and make you uncomfortable and then when the beat switch hits it relaxes you and makes your heart beat even slower than before. He really knows what he’s doing.
Had a brief phase in early 2023 when I got laid off from my corporate job along with our entire office. Since I was fresh out of college, I didn't have savings to just stop & wait for the next job to come along. Ended up working many 12+ hr days in food service to pay rent. Now I have a great job & that experience really developed my character, but man this song really hit and got me through some shitty days at that time.

1:46 “the suns going down, time to start your day bruh” This line just hits, when life has become so sad and nothing makes sense anymore. What we used to live. It all just changed so fast and now I feel like It will never be the same again.
A master piece of songwriting. Each phase of the song can be interpreted as a stage of day. We go from the bright guitar based intro( day), to the beat switch where Ocean starts his "night shift"( the evening or early night) and then finally to the last phase and stanza of the song wherein we finally receive the context for the narrator's ( Franks') situation( deep night). The song has a narrative, but the narrative is not clear until the last phase or stanza when Frank explains how he had to relocate to Houston after Katrina, and this is how he met the lover to whom the song is addressed. Because we receive the background to the narrative at end of thr song, Nights rewards multiple listens.

Zoe Fitzsimmons I went on a few dates with this guy, and he put this song on while I was driving him back home while the sun was fading and it’s such a beautiful memory. But it didn’t end up working out between us so now this song just reminds me of him😭
I feel you. When I was done with school, I started working full time instead of pursuing a career. I earned money, watched the numbers on my account go up, but I didn't really care about the money. Money aint worth shit, compared to some real friends. The people I work with talk to me and stuff, but they're not friends. We're just people working together. When we're done with work, we dont talk. I miss hanging out with my real friends from school. I finally decided to tell my boss I quit, and im starting in school again, pursuing a career, and hopefully finding some real friends along the way. Friends are some of the most important people in my life. Its like a second family, that accepts you for who you are.
Man I dont even have friends that got similar music taste as me. Like they all have similar taste except me I'd prefer some Frank Ocean over like dababy or Roddy rich
@perla sanchez I said what I said Frank Ocean is trash, his music is bland and boring and not enjoyable to listen to at all...but the gays will say otherwise
Can’t believe Frank never made music videos for his solo songs, especially this one. Imo, this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Just always hits. Frank inspired me a lot as a rapper in the underground myself. I’m no where near as talented but I am eternally grateful for his musical influence on me. He truly is a one of a kind artist. Iconic.
Greatest song ever written? It doesn't even have a beat. It has no rhythm. He is just spouting out shit randomly and half of it is incomprehensible. This is hands down the single worst song I have ever heard in my life (and I grew up around Weird Al)...if you could even consider it music at all.
Whenever I listen to this song, I remember my older brother when he was struggling in a bad spot. He just got out of college. Not because he finished his degree, but because he dropped out. It was such a devastating blow for him, especially when he spent countless hours in high school to make honor roll, be part of extracurricular, yet he failed. Not to mention his girlfriend broke up with him within that same time. I still remember the night he cried out his heart and soul when she told him the news. He decided to get a job. It was at Chuck E. Cheese. Within 5 months he quit. Don't know why exactly, but I would understand if it was a shitty place like that. For the next 2 years, all he did was hangout with highschoolers, drive around a car he didn't own, get drunk and smoke with minors, and would still have the audacity to ask, or rather demand my mom for money. Later we find out he's had 2 kids with 2 different girls. His whole situation was fucked. He wasn't going to school. He wasn't working. He spent money he didn't have. He was surrounded by people who didn't give a shit about him. And on top of all that, he had children that needed child support. I was mad at him, furious. But really in my core I was just sad. Unbelievably sorry for him that sometimes I would break down and cry about my brother that I look up to. But now I couldn't be more proud of him. He stopped his reckless partying. He stopped being sorry for himself. He's making nearly 6 figures a year with a job he loves, and a proud father of 2 kids. If you see this comment, just know that I'm incredibly happy for you. I love you, bro.
its hard to describe just how satisfying that transition is. It literally feels like a breathe of fresh air after holding it in for 2 minutes. Just pure peace and bliss.
I’m not joking one time I was riding my skateboard on this road and I was listening to this song and EXACTLY when the part drops at around 3:24 I fell on my face and never listened to the song since.
This has to be one of the best songs that has ever been written, them lyrics, the beat, the transition, what I feel listening to it, I’ll never be tired of it, sheesh💎
@@DanielBrandt77 yeah, its one of the few newer songs Iv found with ``diffrent parts`` like a rhapsody or something, I like that its also is kind of daring
Listen to my friends song, it would really help him if u support him im trying to do this as a surprise for him 😃 ruclips.net/video/_Gcl4dLM9Fs/видео.html
this is my favorite song of all time. I remember driving home from Los Angeles one night (it was an hour drive) and this song came on shuffle as I was passing downtown. I cried. It pulled me apart at my seams and unraveled me into the universe and then painted the skyscrapers with my being. Frank Ocean is everything to me and this song vibrates my soul like nothing else ever has. When I saw him perform this life I swear I had died and entered heaven with this song playing at the pearly gates. It was nirvana.
This is music for every mood and every time. It has gotten me through the worst times and it has made the best times even better. I've listened to this song on train rides, in the car, walking the hallways in school, going on a run, man I know the lyrics like the back of my hand. Truly timeless art.
the way the chords, vocals, and instruments mix just causes euphoria it’s amazing and idk how to explain it i can feel it everywhere in my body and my heart skips a beat
I think frank ocean has one of the best ways to express sadness to the world. I was and still having a dark time in my life. I felt confused and saddened by all the sh*t I am /was going through. But his songs actually express a lot more than just sadness in general. The way he accepts the heartbreak and feels happy that once he had a spot in their hearts is such a weirdly happy and sad thing at the same time. Its like you are crying and smiling at the same time. Crying because they are gone and smiling because you have those amazing memories. Some things just don't work out as we wish. Hope to hear some more from you, Frank
many ppl say that the beat switch represents the switch between halves of the album. in my opinion every beat/track after the switch also has this darker nighttime feel as well
This song feels like a happy ending to a sad story. It's the feeling of starting something new but going through a transition that feels lonely, unloved, just a day to day feeling of nothing new. The song starts a little upbeat as if you were going upwards on a 20 degree angled rollercoaster, then all of the sudden you're dropping down fast while feeling slow. Just grasping the screams, fear and everything you can think of. After just one blink, you're getting off realizing it wasn't that bad.
i wish i could hear this song for the first time again
My first time listening to solo Frank ..been listening to the OF Frank but this is majestic

*In case anybody doesn’t know, the beat switch happens at exactly the halfway point of the album, basically splitting the album into 2 parts*
the difference between blond and blonde
adds to the theme of duality throughout the album

Every day patches the night up
On God you should match it, it's that KO
No white lighters 'til I fuck my 28th up
1998 my family had that Acura
Oh, the Legend
Kept at least six discs in the changer
Back when Boswell and Percy had it active
Couple bishops in the city building mansions
All the reverends
Preaching self made millionaire status
When we could only eat at Shoney's on occasion
After 'trina hit I had to transfer campus
Your apartment out in Houston's where I waited
Stayin' with you when I didn't have a address
Fuckin' on you when I didn't own a mattress
Working on a way to make it outta Texas, every
Droppin' baby off at home before my night shift, yeah

A master piece of songwriting. Each phase of the song can be interpreted as a stage of day. We go from the bright guitar based intro( day), to the beat switch where Ocean starts his "night shift"( the evening or early night) and then finally to the last phase and stanza of the song wherein we finally receive the context for the narrator's ( Franks') situation( deep night). The song has a narrative, but the narrative is not clear until the last phase or stanza when Frank explains how he had to relocate to Houston after Katrina, and this is how he met the lover to whom the song is addressed. I just really wanna go on a late night drive with my one true love while listening to this song, is that too much to ask?

we here bro, we all one big family
👑 I want you to put it back. You are precious if you listen to this masterpiece. Have good life King
I don't have friends that listen to Frank either. So lets vibe to him together 🥂

I’m absolutely glad your brother got his life together. Shit isn’t precisely easy. Congrats on him!

He wanted change and it happen in hes timimg. May he keep going forward👍
This made me tear up , congrats on your bro I’m in the same boat as him minus the kids

this is my favorite song of all time.

I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU HAPPY NEW YEAR
This song feels like a happy ending to a sad story.
After just one blink, you're getting off realizing it wasn't that bad.
this album is so powerful, man...
one of the best albums of all time, in artistic way
