having read a bit of music theory i now understand how chords are made with root notes and notes within a scale, but when i started in March i was so FURIOUS about the variants of chords, i thought theres 1 real way of playing a chord and other variations are simplified, so i googled F chord or G chord and i saw like 5 different chords it made me so pissed many times :D Now i see you can play F or G in like 3 or 4 effective ways and it sounds almost the same :)

@@jspanos500 yeah i get your point, they sure sound different in mids and highs with different notes or muted open strings etc, but when you starting out its so confusing, very few teachers, websites and youtubers will tell you, "this is a G chord, u can play it as ROCK G , classical G, full G etc" they will just say hey this is how u play G chord and thats it, and every person plays it slightly different i didnt know which one to learn as beginner, but after some time it all makes sense :)

So I’m a decently experienced guitar player but thank you for this! I don’t have any trouble with barre chords but I’ve got some guitarist I’ve play with (he’s really a keyboard player but he plays acoustic sometimes) and I’ve been trying to help him plan an F. I always play it either with a full barre chord or just do the top 4 strings (which involves barring just across the first and second strings), but playing the middle 4 looks easier (no barring) so it might help! Thanks!

  • @TractorMonkeywithJL

When I was a kid, another kid showed me how he played F. He was using all four fingers. But he used the first finger on F, second finger on C and then so forth. It would take him like 15 seconds to change chords to that configuration. I then showed him how to bar the E and B strings with the first finger and how much faster that was. He got pissed at me and never invited me over anymore. Yeah, I couldn't bar the F at first either, just takes time and practice.

One thing a lot of instructors and books fail to point out is how important the position of your thumb on the back of the neck is. It sounds trivial, but it can make a world of difference if you use it right. You should think of your hand as a fulcrum that pivots around the radius of the back of the neck. Your thumb should be apposing your finger tips, helping to fret down the notes without putting way more stress on your wrist and hand muscles than you need to, which is what makes you hurt. Until the muscle memory kicks in where you can fret a chord without having to stop and think what the notes are, you need to focus on not over working your hand muscles, which discourages a lot of people in the beginning. And don't just hook your thumb over the top of the neck, it can be a valuable tool if you use it right.
