    I have a 7wood, was in California years ago playing with strangers . I needed to carry 200yds over water to green 208 to stick. Guy says my grandfather has one of those with a giggle. I hit it, beautiful high draw lands on green leaves me 6 feet for birdie. Guy looks at me surprised , I say can your grandfather do that? Good club to have even if you have good swing speed , definitely easier than a long iron.

    I've had a 7 wood in my bag for the past 30+ years. As Karl Malden use to say "don't leave home without it".

    I am glad you mentioned the 7 wood. Many golfers just add a higher lofted hybrid. I am older and playa with older golfers still in their 70s. They will carry 19-26 degrees hybrids and it’s like the long irons. They can hit them fine but they all go the same relative distance.
    Due to the longer shaft the 7 wood will go longer and it’s easier to hit of the tee than a hybrid ( I don’t know why but it is ) I fellow I play with every week ditched his 19 and 21 hybrids and I loaned him a 5 and 7 wood. He does not hit them off the fairway as he likes his hybrid for that. He uses the 5 and 7 off the tee. He now has a chance to hit the long ( for him ) par 3 in regulation.

    One thing I’ve notice is how much lofts have increased. 7 woods are now ~21 degrees (roughly 5 Wood in old money) and 9 woods are 23 degrees (roughly 7 Wood in old money). OEMs should move away from the old descriptions and simply use lofts.

    Callaway Heavenwood is the prize club. 7 wood loft with 4 wood shaft....can choke up and down on grip to vary distances and get great carry with tons of loft with same swing. perfect for hitting to greens with hazards in front requiring carry and stopping power. plenty of distance when played at full length. can take the place of two or three hybrids it is so versatile.Makes room for an extra wedge/scoring club.

    I have carried a 7 wood since the early 1990's, when I was in my mid 30's. Yes...I hit it much longer than I do now...but...I have a lot of confidence using it. My bag consists of my 13° Yonex Super ADX 3 wood, a Cobra 5&7 wood, 6-PW, Nike Slingshot Irons, Cobra GW, Ray Cook SW, Ping Zing LW and my mid 1970's Bull's-eye blade putter. I don't bother with a driver anymore...as I don't have the lower back I did in my 30's to late 40's.

    I have one and it's one of the most constant clubs I have. I don't use a 2,3,or 4 iron bc they are harder to hit constantly. I'm an 11 handicapper. I know golf is usually about curves either draw or slight fade for shot shaping example a dog leg but my 7 wood goes dead straight and I'm very happy with that. The most forgiving club I use. I have the Cobra 7 wood.

    Good video as usual!!! I just put the 7 wood back in my bag this past weekend. I hit it between 200-210. It is good for long par 3s and into shorter Par 5s. It is high and lands soft. I have trouble with the 5 through 3 Irons. My bag has the PW-6, 4 hybrid, 3 hybrid, 7 wood, 5 wood, Driver and my wedges. This video help me with what I was seeing. Ditto

      I noticed that you carry both a 7w and a 3h. Are the distances about the same ???

    • @michaelpope1710
      @michaelpope1710 5 лет назад +3

      2Bad they are about the same, but the 3h is good for coming out of the rough. The fairway wood is good off the tee and fairway. Plus the 7w lands much softer into the greens than the 3h. The 3h is good for your second shot on par 5s if you are looking for some extra roll. My 7w doesn’t give me much roll out. It is great for target golf or pin seeking.

    • @kymstock1852
      @kymstock1852 2 года назад

      @@michaelpope1710 My bag resembles yours with the exception of the TS2 27 hybrid set at 29 degress instead of my 6 iron. I also have a Cobra SL 3 hybrid instead of a full length Hybrid. The versatility of the short handled Hybrid far out weighs any loss of distance. My 4 Cobra hybrid ( 22 degree) goes a similar distance to the TS2 7 Wood ( maybe 5-10 metres less) , but is useful when I am in the rough on par 4s ( frequent) when the longer shafted 7 Wood is more difficult to hit. I have to manipulate the TS2 Hybrid ( choke down and fade some shots) to make up for the 22-29 loft gap, other wise a good hit with the TS2 went similar distance to the Cobra set at 25 degrees.

  • @jimpowell2296
    @jimpowell2296 Год назад

    Short answer is absolutely yes! I am over 70 with a handicap of 13. I have carried 3 hybrids for the last 5 years. I recently tried a callaway rogue 7 wood. This really surprised me. It is easy to hit and goes higher and longer than my 3 hybrid. So I took my 3 and 4 hybrid out of my bag and kept my 4 wood and added my 60 degree. Doing this gives me combinations I can change depending on courses I play. This club is the best change I have made in the last 5 years.

    Always in the bag: 70's Cobra Baffler 7W hybrid, real wood with huge brass sole plate....unless special course conditions suggest otherwise, usually joined with its cousin, the matching 9W .....generally partnered with my persimmon Louisville 4W.....sometimes my bag does seem to draw curious looks.

    Two years ago (2017), after moving to Southern California, I decided it was time to replace my sticks, in stages due to $$ budget!
    1) *917 D2 Driver, 917 F2 3 & 5 Woods.*
    2) *46, 50, 54, & 58* Vokey Wedges.
    3) *918 AP2 Irons 5-9* to replace *4-PW 990 B Irons.*
    (46 Vokey as PW)
    Went with *917 F2 7 Wood* instead of a 4 Iron because I have Never been a "Hybrid Fan".
    I'm pleased with my decision.

    I now have 3 Titleist hybrids which have replaced my 4,5 and 6-irons. The thing is that with the sophisicated hosels, loft and lie angles can be tuned very precisely. This allows for a smooth transition from hybrids to irons. My hybrids are such that my long game beyond a 150 yards is pretty darn good for an average amateur. People might not embrace replacing the 6-iron, saying, "I'm not ready for THAT." But having the hybrid in my bag has made those 160-170 shots fun. I am either going to be on the green, or just off it, every time. I'll take it, LOL.

    My bag stops at a 5 iron (poor little five gather dust in the corner).I don't have a lot of chances to get to the driving range and play often. So what I do to compensate is I keep more woods and hybrids in the bag because I tend to hit them accurately. I have also put single length irons in the bag. My 3 and 5 woods and my 22 degree and 25 degree hybrids woods give me a crapload of options from 180 to 250 yards because I can work them. If I were to purchase another set, I would get driver, 4 wood, 7 wood set up because the loft allows me to hit them long like they are on a string:) ....And land them soft

      Almost as though the traditional idea that moving your head before you strike might be mistaken and all that counts is that you can deliver the path and face angle consistently with the club each time regardless of your swing mechanics.

    So I actually carry a 4 and 5 iron and then a 3 and 7 wood I hit both fine it just depends on the situation but those clubs pretty much cover me from 185ish-240ish.... took me a whole year to figure it out though switching between 5 wood, 4, 5, and 3 hybrids (which I hate and don't carry) and a 3 iron until I landed on that combination of clubs for my longer distances. 7 wood is my absolute favorite though and has helped me hit some of my best shots

    I bought a 4 hybrid early in the summer to replace my 4-5 iron off the tee. But it's hook, hook hook 70 percent of the time. I just can't get consistency with it. I think it's because it looks like a FW but is to be hit more like a mid iron that causes my brain to malfunction. So now I've bought a used Adams Blue 7W from Golfbidder. I have high hopes for that.

    As you mentioned, the advantages for me having the longer irons seemed pointless as I really had very little difference between my 5 & 4 irons. I've had Yonex Vmass 7 wood in my bag for years now (as you can tell from the model). It has a great whip to it in the shaft and when playing a par 5 with a good strike I can clear 220yds. On 1 particular round I managed 2 eagles because of it which I know I wouldn't have been able to achieve with an iron.

    I'm 55 with a very dodgy back, I find a 22 degree hybrid gives me same / similar results in carry (180 ish) to a
    7 wood but is more consistent due to shaft length. But I've not tried a modern 7 wood, are the new generation 7 woods considerably better than an 8 year old model. My hybrid is a cobra f8.

      Try Cobra F Max 7 wood fantastic club and I am 6 years your junior. Going go get me the 4 hybrid in the same range too.

    I carry a 5 hybrid...best club in my bag and can vary the yardage between 170-200 yards dependent on hit strength and swing length. Play of 7 and should be off 5...more work on short game needed

    I would have liked to see you hit full shots with both clubs instead of bunting the 3 iron out.

    I was told my bag looks like a flower bouquet with all the head covers. I don’t care what it looks like. Function is what I am looking for. Don’t care about looks of clubs at all.

    What iron did you hit in the iron 7 wood test?

  • @donharrold1375
    @donharrold1375 5 лет назад

    The 7 Wood is the easiest to hit longer club period as far as I’m concerned. The bigger club head makes it much more forgiving, higher launching, longer and softer landing than any 3 hybrid I’ve ever tried. Anyone who hasn’t tried one should. Interesting that you mention that some players might benefit from using a 9 Wood. The problem is finding one these days. They’ve been killed off by hybrids more or less?

      Don Harrold I just purchased an Orlimar 9 wood off amazon, great club!

      Anthony Viola I think you can get the Rogue FW in 9 Wood loft and the M4 is available in 24 degree loft, marked 7HL. Both quite expensive and hard to find of the rack.

    Good video. I’m not the best hitter of irons to be honest. I carry a 7 wood, would I benefit any from supplementing the 7 with a 9 wood. Thanks

      Henrik Stenson, Annika Sorenstam, David Duval to name a few. Many top players practice it to allow their body to open up more through impact.
