I loved hearing him speak without the awkwardness he usually has in interviews . Getting to hear about the influence his siblings had on him and how play acting as a child inspired him was awesome. I thought his performance in Signs was amazing and also in You Were Never Really Here. ❤
I could listen to Joaquin talk for hours and hours…his voice….his thoughts…..the way he can explain complex situations in a sophisticated way that is so understandable… he’s brilliant empathic and amazing
Love this interview. This format is perfect for him to just talk without the uncomfortable weird TV interview show these guys are pushed to do to promote their work.
Joaquin is a true artist. It seems his body won’t allow him to act out a scene if it’s too scripted. He’s the best ! I love how everyone just pays attention really well when he’s speaking. Respect.
Gladiator? I have to ask again: Gladiator?? If you mean that it would be a fitting ironic comment on the relative uselessness and ineptitude of the 'Academy ' when it comes to recognizing and honoring artistic achievement, then absolutely yes, Gladiator. But if you're being earnest, then you really should see The Master. If you have seen Master, then join all of existence, now and forever after, in disregarding this comment. But that's probably a decision that you've already made for yourself. I don't know about Walk the Line; I saw a bit of it on cable years ago. Reese Witherspoon seemed fine in it, although I really admired her in Freeway and Election. I think I had more fun with Walk Hard. I like John Reilly in everything from Hard Eight and Boogie Nights to Stepbrothers and Check It Out! and Moonbase 8. And his movie with Diego Luna, and definitely the Little Hours with Molly Shannon, and of course Talladega Nights. I was kind of perplexed by comments I heard John Reilly make in an interview while promoting The Sisters Brothers, that movie he did with Joaquin Phoenix. (I'm glad to see Westerns come back any time, and thank Red Dead Redemption 2 for its role in that. RDR2 and The Master have had the strongest affect on me of just about anything I've seen, read, or played recently.) JCR talked about his ability both to take the lead as an alpha in a partnership, as well as to cede that role to the other player if the role and the production called for it. JCR said he loved JP and would take a bullet for him. But at some point JCR described watching JP work like watching a raccoon root through trash. I'm not a good judge of people, and I miss a lot of nonverbal communication and social cues - as might have already seemed pretty likely by this point - but I couldn't tell if JCR was taking a backhanded swipe at JP or not. The comment seemed to have been a response to how well they got along or how they worked together, but you can never tell since an interview can be edited and rearranged in any way.
In answer to Arnett's question, Phoenix gives a brilliant comedic performance in Inherent Vice, holding his own against an array of comic actors like Martin Short, Maya Rudolph, Jeannie Berlin, and Owen Wilson.
The Bealtes were the Beat-als (beat- all s) right after being the Silver Beetles, and Johnny and the Moon Dogs. Stu Sutcliff (original bass player) goaded John to switch it to Beatles. It was in reference to the drum beat and the popular beat poets of the late 50s, early 60s. But then, there is that flaming pie story that Lennon made up for the press.
What a cool guy- I always picture him as his character in Parenthood- and I feel like he is still that hurt little boy thats because this amazingly interesting and complicated Artist.
Only just started listening and I immediately gotta say he and Cate Blanchett are absolutely top tier guests. Good job dudes. I'd love to hear like Elijah Wood, Kevin Nealon, Josh Hartnett, and Elliott Page soon.
Yes to Josh Hartnett, especially b/c he left & recently returned to Hollywood (kinda like Brendan Fraser or Colin Farrell, never fully gone from the movies, but diminished star power). Interesting to hear about his experience filming the adaptation of Jeffrey Eudenides' The Virgin Suicides (such a good book & oddly liked the film too, which is rare). And curious about his experience at SUNY & being expelled - if & how that changed his life trajectory.
@Kitty8791 yeah The Virgin Suicides was a decent book and movie. I'd love to hear him talk about The Faculty and although I've already watched Lucky Number Slevin with his commentary it'd be nice to hear his thoughts looking back at working with that great cast.
45:14 I remember this thing and as I really like Joaquin's work I was really trying to see if there was something there to appreciate in this new... phase he was going through?! I mean, I wanted it to be some sort of joke but it felt like maybe a far stretch?! 😳 Well, I'm happy to be wrong... ish. ❤
Super old news. Entirely a joke. No mystery there, just Casey Affleck and Joaquin trolling the entire planet. Not many people got it. But. That’s people for ya!🤷🏻♂️
I had been following his career for years when he made 'im still here' and it was really obvious to me what he was doing and deeply fucking frustrating watching the world debate his sanity.. sadder to see people seemingly enjoy a spectacular downfall; that had happened when 'squeaky clean vegan' River died and I wondered if that was part of what led him.
I rewatched Master because of this interview. Joaquin is amazing for sure. (Would have been great to have had PSH on here.) It was interesting to hear JP talk about how humiliating the whole business of acting is and must be. I always assumed actors were extroverts comfortable with revealing themselves. But I bet he’s describing feelings experienced by many actors.
Flea was very good friends with his brother River. I remember a while back, Flea had to record a bass lesson on video (tape back then). And had River do it with him because he was so timid and nervous to do it alone. Wouldn't doubt if it's on RUclips.
@@christophersherman5007 One of my all time favorite movies, another Gus Van Sant production, My Own Private Idaho, starred River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, & Michael Balzary (aka Flea). They seem to have become much closer friends during filming, but shared a musical connection too.
Booo. Wish you had kept that damn good "Duran Duran" inspired intro song from last episode. And if you guys don't start adding video or at least clips on your channel with video, I'm just gonna have to keep listening. Keep up the great work guys! #haventmissedoneyet
Considering the 100% organic Bruce Wayne deepthroat promise… this is impressively even better than all expectation. And expectations are super fucking high. Over.
have you ever heard his 911 call about River at Viper Room. The police were absolute horrors to him on that call. Not shocking because they are all owned by US Corp (ie. The crown/vatican)-still to this day.
Yes, and I was working as a DJ one New Year's Eve at a Hotel. I worked in a Disco in the Hotel and the partying went on all over the hotel. So, too many people were in the elevator so it stopped in between floors and a person walked into the open doors and fell to his death. True story, it does happen. So sad but it really happened.
I can't believe you got him to do an interview
I loved hearing him speak without the awkwardness he usually has in interviews . Getting to hear about the influence his siblings had on him and how play acting as a child inspired him was awesome. I thought his performance in Signs was amazing and also in You Were Never Really Here. ❤

I was a regular fan of this podcast...and then along came JOAQUIN. Now, I'm a super (grateful) fan. You're the best, SmartLess!
I love when he mentions River. It keeps him alive.
Jason seems scared sh*tless that he is going to say something to piss off Joaquin 😂

Yes. True to his body. We can all learn from this
Parenthood was the first time I saw Joaquin 💯🇵🇷✊🏻 and Keanu Reeves.
That’s right! Joaquin was known as Leaf back then.
Space Camp for me
Joaquin should have three Oscars. He has one for Joker, but he should have an additional two for his performances on Gladiator and Walk the Line.

@@gentlesoft6627 I fell asleep trying to read your essay.
Mission accomplished. Solace taken in the consolation of art
Thank you very much, such a priceless experience. Brilliant!
He was great in the movie "Her". About a futuristic time period.
Joaquin is so much fun to listen to here. Thank you so much for this guys 😁 subbed!
Such a great actor. Good interview!
JP in The Master is the most powerful performance ive ever seen.
Just 4 master's of their craft hanging. ❤🎬💯
Very cool actor
He seems so relaxed and comfortable. I don’t know how you guys did it but great job!
Leo, Bale,Joaquin are the 3 best actors today.
Excellent! This man was born to act. Can’t wait for Joker 2 ❤
Great to hear him speak. It allows you to see his humanness.
When the interview first started, I thought that it was going to be like pulling teeth. It was incredible to hear him open up. What a great interview!
According to Oxford, ‘goodnight’ and ‘good night’ are ‘both forms of acceptable spellings’. #leaveseanalone 😂

the best smartless so far

Omg Why can’t this be on videooooo I love Joaquin ❤

Joaquin Phoenix is at the 7 minute mark
Imagine Sean Hayes on Arrested Development
YAY...MY THEME IS BACK...WOOP WOOP. NOW I WILL LISTEN TO INTERVIEW!

The I'm Still Here thing? Yeah I didn't see it til after hearing what it really was and even then I thought it was a hard watch being so cringy.
Super old news. Entirely a joke. No mystery there, just Casey Affleck and Joaquin trolling the entire planet.
Not many people got it. But. That’s people for ya!🤷🏻♂️
i loved the master
It's so exciting to talk about makeup and hair
LOL
He was so real and funny in this interview. Maybe his best one ever.
After what
His best one ever is being interviewed by his sisters Rain & Summer on their podcast 'Launch Left'.
I agree, his performance in The Master, is perfect, uncomfortable, truthful
That was amazing
I had been following his career for years when he made 'im still here' and it was really obvious to me what he was doing and deeply fucking frustrating watching the world debate his sanity.. sadder to see people seemingly enjoy a spectacular downfall; that had happened when 'squeaky clean vegan' River died and I wondered if that was part of what led him.
How does Joaquin’s voice sound exactly the same as when he was 11?
I rewatched Master because of this interview. Joaquin is amazing for sure. (Would have been great to have had PSH on here.)
It was interesting to hear JP talk about how humiliating the whole business of acting is and must be. I always assumed actors were extroverts comfortable with revealing themselves. But I bet he’s describing feelings experienced by many actors.
They absolutely are not. The amount of ‘I did theater to come out of my shell’ Stories are endless.
The master is my favorite movie of all time. His performance is also my favorite of all time
Jason Bateman just plays who he is....Joaquin plays characters.
Hey Joaqu 😂😂😂
Loved Joaquin in Two Lovers.
Check out the Sisters Brothers with John C Reilly ⭐️
When Joaquin talks I hear flea from RHCP
Flea was very good friends with his brother River. I remember a while back, Flea had to record a bass lesson on video (tape back then). And had River do it with him because he was so timid and nervous to do it alone. Wouldn't doubt if it's on RUclips.
Flea, John Frusciante and Joaquin basically all have the same voice

Woah. Now that’s a get.
How are they getting these guests?
by asking probably. they do know the same people, if not each other
@@obscure.reference one of them said towards the end of the interview that Rooney got him his dog so I think he's friends with them

Will is underselling the import of how widely detested LA Law's Rozalind Shays character was leading to her trip down the elevator shaft.
I’d say it was on par with the killing of Ana Lucia on LOST 👏
went undercover for 2 yrs
...its like team sports
The cool kids 🤟🏼👍🏼🫶🏼👊🏼

This is amazing
Homie is GRINDING that jaw. “What a twat”-Agreed.
He sounds like a tortured soul
sure would be cool if sean and will could shut up
The master is my favorite movie of all time. His performance is also my favorite of all time
Id agree. I think his character in Master rivals DDL in there will be blood 👍🏼
