I'm assuming whatever university he went to did a combined electrical engineering + computer engineering degree or an electrical engineering degree with computer engineering electives. add some more dc bias to the base of the transistor, it needs to be sitting at roughly 0.7 Vdc to be biased properly. probably easier to start with a basic common emitter amplifier and add the other crap later. i miss this stuff... c'est la vie :)
Without a flyback diode across there, when the transistor closes it'll have a sudden and massive voltage spike across it unless there's a diode there to short it to itself once power shuts off.
The secret is the curly thing called the inductor. It basically develops momentum in the flow of electrons so when the gate closes and redirects the current across the resistor, a bunch of electrons get piled up (voltage) because the inductor is continuing to push them and they can only move slowly through the resistor
An inductor opposes changes in current by generating back EMF. Therefore, if there is a sudden drop in current (when the transistor, acting as a switch, becomes open), there will be a significant voltage spike with reverse polarity at the transistor's collector, which can damage the transistor. The magnitude of the spike depends on the rate of change of current. This is why a sine wave is not ideal for blowing up a transistor, as it switches off the transistor more slowly than a square wave. That's why he wanted to use a square wave.

Among the other replies here, one of Terry's purposes of TempleOS was an OS that gave you complete control over your computer at a very low level. In order to make this work without security issues he opted to not include any networking with the OS. Not only can you not use the internet but you cannot connect to any external devices.

So he used Linux for internet... Why didn't he invent a browser for his commodore like os?
when he was ordered to make an OS one of the details was no networking
He said in a interview at McDonalds that he would leave the internet networking up to the newer generation and that he didn’t want it in his OS.
