Might be one of the tightest bands of all time. Everyone is doing their part, playing in the pocket, and the final result sounds way bigger than 4 musicians. Incredible musicianship.
I caught an ear on it watching Yellowstone. I realized, that sounds like new old-school country that is spot on so I grabbed my little do hickey and did an audio song search and BLAM! There it was like magic. Such a turn of events to find new music that I can really dig. It's got that old-school country, a little boogie-woogie, and outlaw country music sound to it, complete with a guy that writes, sounds, and sings very similar to the great Waylon Jennings. Now who don't LOVE that?!
I was heartbroken for a second, but I'm so happy for the exposure Sturgill got him. Not sure what he's up to now, other than playing Hendrix in Nashville, like a beast. Also this bass player plays with Margo Price last time I checked.
Alex Bigelow little Joe is great.....I should check out where is at it's a little more roots but check the guitar guy....utube.....woody pines make it to the woods....lmk
I remember this night. I tried to stay up to watch Sturgill. Fell asleep and woke up mid way through the song. Shot up, watched, woke my whole my family up singing and then laughed so hard at Dave’s reaction after it ended.
I still to this day think that's Dave's coolest reaction to any band that's played on his stage. And I laugh every time I reply Dave's grrrrr to that's fantastic... over and over .. You can hear Paul say ....time passes on
I've watched this so many times and each time I'm so glad that Dave is so into Sturgill. He's obviously excited about what he's heard after decades of live music in his career and it's Sturgill that he shows this much excitement for.
I hardly ever watched late night shows. Especially the musical acts. This time I did watch. I had almost always been disappointed, wishing that I hadn't. But I was going to the kitchen when I thought I'd check it out for a seconf or two. I sat back down and that's when I heard the best sounding setup that I had heard in many a long times. The sound coming from that dude's Telecaster and amps just blew me away. I really dug these guys sound. The guitar player with that telecaster, found something that most players, including myself hasn't found yet. He found his sound. That sound that makes your nipples hard when you play that first chord.
"That don't bother me none" Edit-- If you'd like to hear his voice better and just how powerful he can be with just a guitar you should check out his NPR tiny desk music gig, does a great version of this.
Yeah, that's why they don't sound very good and can't play well. That's what I like about Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, they are great because they wear and toss expensive clothes all day every day, and you can hear it in their great and timeless music.

Man it's almost 2024.Nashville sucks. This guy is the truth.
One of those songs that can get you up and moving. Drunk as hell trying to two-step but just don't care. Songs that make you smile.
Still coming back to watch this performance.
Me too bro
Miles Miller killing it on the drums and backing vocals
Heard he's working for the rail road now.
Last I saw he was touring with his own band. @HighSpeedNoDrag
That's a song that you don't want to end.
Yup. Watched it 3 xs in a row
This is the new Waylon Jennings guys!! Love his voice. The control and rhythm is pure country!!!
Hold on. There’s only one Waylon Jennings sir.
I first heard this on "Yellowstone" and have been hooked since.
This song and artist are awesome!!!! REAL country music
Erik Kurek yes....real country.....Jason isbell, many others
Dave's reaction epic and funny as it gets....I still laugh out every time ... Dave sincerely meant it. ... FANTASTIC
Bro-country fans,...THIS is real counrty music! Walk away from the shallow swill.
Absolutely outstanding performance by Sturgill and his crew, contemporary groove. Some real talent on show 👌🏻
this is such a masterful performance. The guitarist is wonderful

Laur jaumets guitar performance is way underrated, dude RIPS
Alex Bigelow yes...but no longer with sturgill
I was heartbroken for a second, but I'm so happy for the exposure Sturgill got him. Not sure what he's up to now, other than playing Hendrix in Nashville, like a beast. Also this bass player plays with Margo Price last time I checked.

what blows me away is that he was unfamiliar mostly with this genre of music when he auditioned. That's the sign of a true pro.
He’s in Drivin N Cryin now
I've watched this over a thousand times! Pure genius!

Have you not seen when he had Springsteen on? He was pretty stoked then, too.
My son got me started on Sturgill. Thanks Sam.
My dad got me on it.
The Greatest performance ever in the history of The Letterman show 😁 That telecaster freaking nails it!! Love it!!
I love that sound. This guy found his sound. And it is good!
yup. Fuckin dialed in@@scooterbrown4334
fantastic, great band - tight.
Love this song. Sturgill has so many great songs.
Throwback to the Outlaw Country, as real as it gets right there. SS is one hell of a Country musician.
Greetings from Spain. Beautiful band. So tight. The guitar player is fire.
Laur Joamets is one of the best in the business. Dude crushes it everytime...
Yep, and he said he's done playing country. 😕
I know only little about this AWESOME BAD ASS GTR PLAYER. YES THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE PERFORMANCES I CAN THINK OF
I spy a super reverb and a tele; a staple. Sturgill a modern outlaw of country. Good stuff.
Jomets is playing through a 70s era Fender Musicmaster bass amp. Seriously.
Absolutely mindblowingly amazing! Love it! Hillbilly music at it's finest ❤️🎶🎶
Love “Waylon “ sound in his voice. 👍🏻
Wish I knew more about music so I could properly express how their music makes me feel. There’s something in that makes me feel older than I am…
Like the tempo..upbeat..very awesome...
A few sips of shine, a couple of tokes and a whole lot of Sturgill!
It's a beautiful night in the country!
Love Letterman! Sturgill Simpson. F yeah!
This was the band at its best.
I hardly ever watched late night shows. Especially the musical acts. This time I did watch. I had almost always been disappointed, wishing that I hadn't.

Stephen Merchant killing it on the bass.
Kevin Black but I can see the resemblance
Little Monkey fella
YEAH!!! Thanks to "Yellowstone", I found you!!! I hear me some Waylon in that song!!!!
He’s such an amazing talent. I love his music
Which of his songs is your favorite
Rare to get such an awesome response from Dave. That has to make you feel good!
They killed it!!!
People plz witness greatness in its natural form.
This is beyond comprehension how amazing this performance is. Laur is out of this world with that rockabilly stuff. Tasty AS FUCK!
Still here. This is so good!
Here now
keepin' that Tele action down in the first two frets, the way its supposed to be
I feel bad for the miserable people that actually give time to hit a thumbs down on videos like this.
You should invest your sympathies in people a little more worthy of them.
This was his best band.
Three years later I'm with you.
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE FOUR PIECE BAND...ONLY THING THREE GOT ON YOU IS A STANDUP BASE 💜💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏💜💜💜⚡
TRUE ARTIST 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Badass song
It just dont get any better than that
Love this!
Does anybody know what he says at the end of the "none" scream and before the "Lately"? At 2:11
"That don't bother me none"
Edit-- If you'd like to hear his voice better and just how powerful he can be with just a guitar you should check out his NPR tiny desk music gig, does a great version of this.
Since radio can't classify what genre of music Sturgill Simpson is in, create a new genre of music named after this group. Any thoughts?
George Jones on the drum kit
Searching for real music tonight. I just found it
That's all you need right there.
Love
With a name like Sturgill... he's got to be good!!!
guitar player reminds me of James Honeyman-Scott. Serious picking"
Great
so good
Awesome!
Boys are some good man
The guitar player from Drivin N Cryin
Nice!
Letterman knew what he’d witnessed
ROCKABILLY!
Commonwealth of Kentucky flag on the bass drum. Yessir!
Matt Eldridge Kentucky outta be proud, Sturgil is a bad dude. As a proud Georgian I tip my hat 👍🏼
REALLY wish he stuck with this kind of stuff.
Haha...yeah, copy that...Was shocked to see he went away from this and into some electronic fanatsy music style. Well, I stick to his old music
Sturgill simpson kicks ass
Who's that Tele player? Wow!!!
I don't usually care too much for country but Hot Damn!
it's really rockabilly
It's really good, regardless.
That's not rockabilly. Not even close.
This is more genuine than most of that top 40 pop crap they try to pass off as country music nowadays.
Johnny Ballinger This is more country than cousin-fucking.
That was tight.
Bass 😊😊😊
awesome
Damn right
Its 1976 and I’m driving a big rig and the wipers are slapping time to proper white mans blues
Love it man
Good Gawd!!
What model Tele is he playing?
Laur's is a monster!
No doubt that he's a WAYLON fan. Who isn't?
MANNN this came out on my Birthday! Must've been living up a Life of Sin. Cheers, forever, Sturgil. I'll see you in hell!
Awesome. What the hell happened in 2019?
Letterman has a way with word's...
I'm thinking I like country music.
quality
LOL he's waiting the same shirt he wore on NPR tiny desk after saying that was the only shirt he owned
Yeah, that's why they don't sound very good and can't play well. That's what I like about Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, they are great because they wear and toss expensive clothes all day every day, and you can hear it in their great and timeless music.
One thing I’ll say about Jay Leno .. he’d always stand for whatever band he had on , out of respect.
Bummed he won’t be making any kore tunes like this
Never say never😁
That entire band was tighter than a nun's cooter.
That tele sounded amazing.
real deal none of that pre-fab bro country.
Duuuuude
Dave.....
very high compliment from mr. letterman. but the question remains the same..."who the f**k is sturgill simpson!???"
hmmmm!
Got the shirt!!!
STURGILL IS GOD
I saw this movie on Netflix and now.....
fgteev bendy
Laur Jamets blows my mind every time. Also, first time I've seen Letterman genuinely impressed by the musical guest.
it's really rockabilly!
I'm pretty sure this is Texas swing, not rockabilly.
Similar, but Texas swing is more country.
This country boy. gtfo
Oh that twang 😍
Come back Sturgill!
Dave’s groan 😂😂😂
Great music performance...followed by Letterman's stupid, lame words
