Link mentioned in the video stopped working. Here is new link where you can extract maps. garmin.bbbike.org/ I don't have my Garmin satnav anymore so i can't fully test it.
Many thanks. My map was 10 years out of date. As a 77 year old pensioner I could not afford to pay Garmin to update. I am so pleased to have my Satnav updated. :-)
@@mr.sowhat3796 Older Garmins charge for map updates. A quote I have on a 2012 one is £79.99 on Garmin Express. Tried transferring a map file from a newer model (that was free) to this one and it doesn't work
Thanks a lot! I have the exact Garmin model and year (2010) and had given up on it since it is not financially logical to pay Garmin $$$ for lifetime updates on this device. Your easy to follow video has injected new life in it. Thanks again!
Nicely explained! Worked perfectly. I thought at first that the downloaded open source map would replace the existing Garmin map. But after listening carefully to your explanation and noticing in your video of the now TWO options in the Garmin menu, I see that my hesitation was unwarranted. In fact, I am now encouraged to load more countries individually. (I reside in western Europe and do a fair amount of traveling. Sorry for the long-winded comment, just wanted to send you a sincere thank you for your tutorial. Keep up the good work! Best, WL
Thank you again for your excellent tutorial. I got a bit braver and added some of France to my UK selection, and chose the extra scenery option. The added detail is excellent, and it all worked first go, including requesting the special file with the added areas of France which had to be sent to me by email. You have given new life to my GPS when I had nearly given up using it with its almost ten years out-of-date map. A Gold Star to you!!
Thank you so much 🙏 !! I did it first time myself. I followed exactly what you said for downloading the torrent file. Later I formatted my SD card and created a Garmin folder and copied the .img file into that folder. That’s it boom !! I can see the updated maps. My device was more than 10 years old .No need update software in it by adding device on Garmin website unless you want it . Just download the latest map and copy it to SD card and put it in device.
Thank you so much! Worked like charm on my Nuvi 2405 :) Map updates from Garmin are very expensive and they don't show all streets and adresses correctly in my country (Slovenia, Europe), and these free maps are perfect. Thanks!
Thank you, very useful. Updated maps for Eastern US with these on my mom's Nuvi 255W and also added Mexico maps to a 1450LMT. Note: Added a 16Gb Sim Card from Walmart to both to hold either these added maps or Garmin's map updates.
So I take it that if I choose North America it will not download ALL of North America as a whole Map, but rather I have to choose each State Map separately and download that map and add it to my SSD Card and then choose that State Map as I enter it when driving?? Is this correct? Can anyone answer this?
It's a pity that it doesn't have the Post code search and the city search is very limited. To get round this I do my search using the old version and save it to Favourites, then switch back to the new version to find my destination.
Thanks MRP - Great video! :) it's so much better this way than torrent sites as those could have viruses / crapware which could attack you're PC/Mac etc
does it support garmin zumo 595 lm.i want to use it for bangladesh.and bangladesh map is extra100$ to buy..so will it support do u have any idea regarding this? thank you
No idea why but I just received the latest map update for free from Garmin for my very old nuvi 255w. About every six months I cycle through all my GPS units (7 in total) and install any software updates available. In the past the only map options available to this unit was to reinstall the old map (I think it was 2009 year) or pay $59.99 for a new one which was never going to happen. For some reason, this last time they said a map update was available and it was to install the 2023.10 map. A very welcome surprise but I have no idea why. Maybe they've stopped supporting their oldest maps and have to offer something else instead? The only downside was that it required a large flash card, 4gb wasn't enough. It said it needed 5gb minimum so the next thing I had available was 16gb, but it worked just fine.
Tried it (Generic Routable (new style)). First disappointment: I can't download the entire United States in one shot. I then had to select the State of Maine, and then select every single individual map piece for the rest of New England. Next disappointment: the maps were not as accurately displayed as the native Garmin maps. For one thing, the roads are more crudely drawn, and do not come close to matching up with Google Maps or Google Earth. I cannot have confidence with mileage and time estimates if the roads are not accurate.
Thanks MRP - Great video! :) it's so much better this way than torrent sites as those could have viruses / crapware which could attack you're PC/Mac etc
works perfect on the Garmin Rino 650 & Nuvi 660 (my Rino 750 has latest Australian map installed never bothered try sure it would work) Thank you for sharing
Thanks for this, tried it out and it certainly does update the maps and gives you options to use the old or new or even both but the limitation is that the open source maps are not very good to search by postcode or even street names at times. I believe I have both maps enabled so I get the option to search by post code and hopefully they work together and give me routes based on the newest maps, yet to try it out on the road properly though. (Garmin nuvi 760, 2020 OSM update)
after doing it, my gps has a new Map but it can not SEARCH any address, the error message is NO STREET NAME IS MATCHED or NO CITY NAME IS MATCHED ! do you know why?
Hi, thanks for your help. I managed to download the maps i wanted (ie: France),but I would like to ask you if it is possible to download additional updated Europe maps like (Italy Swizerland,Germany etc) on the same 32 GB SD card i have in my Garmin?
If you stop video at 6:38, you will be able to see option to select maps. If you upload additional maps (different countries) you can select multiple maps (activate maps for different counties (France, Switzerland, Germany etc) I hope my comment make sense :)
I was able to download a map for Germany where I'm going tomorrow and it looks good. Will post if it actually works ok or not all the way once I've tested it. Thank you very much!
Thanks, this worked great! One question though...Since I was looking for maps for the mid-section of the USA I had to manually select my area of interest. When doing it this way you do not get a map date like you did, so I have no idea if this map data is current. Can I just assume that all the map data from that open source map site is fresh?
It DOES NOT WORK on a Garmin Nuvi 265w. I have tried the regular map, and the "new" map. It will NOT find addresses that are even in the old 2010 map that came with my unit. Sorry. This just doesn't work.
Same for the 205w Garmin I have. The original 2010 maps found addresses that the new downloaded map did not find. So far, this has been a waste of time.
Followed steps, GPS isn't doing the last step by showing the new update. I go to map info and nothings changed, I've already repeated the process from scratch. Garmin Zumo 660 using 2gb MSD card ??
Very informative and thank you for that as well as being clear spoken. (it's rare) lol I have a Nuvi 255W but I don't have an SD card. Here's the interesting thing. When I go into it's data through Windows file explorer, it shows it has 2Gb internal storage. There isn't much free space but if I am updating the maps, couldn't I delete the existing ones or move them to my pc and replace the file with the newly downloaded one? Saving the whole need for an SD card? Just a thought.
Better keep a copy of the old Garmin map, because when you find the new one does not support postcode (Zipcode) search or street search your new map might not be very much use at all. I am trying to find a fix for that, but so far no success.
I did exactly everything you explained on your video. I extract the image file that was downloaded. still don't show the open source. The Garmin I have is a Garmin Nuvi 200.
Did it exactly as said but Garmin does not read card. BOTH satnavs Hopeless! Just found out that Garmin do not recommend cards over 8gb so I have ordered two and will try again, so maybe my fault.
SD card must be formatted to FAT32 for my 1310 to see it. Although It's NOT seen on the boot screen as here in the video, but is seen in the settings/maps/Info place - BUT, there is NO place to input a UK Post Code, which makes it pretty much useless for any UK owner!!
I have downloaded the maps and they work on my garmin but I seem to have lost sound. I no longer get verbal directions. Has anyone else had this problem?
When I select North America, there's no option to download maps for the continent. When I add tiles to cover NA it says file too large. I remove tiles to be able to add my email and when I submit I get a message that it's still too big. Very frustrating especially that most others are a single download for North America including Mexico.
Hi MRP, thanks for the helpful video. After following your instructions my Garmin Nuvi 250W does not register the Opensource Maps on the opening screens. However when I go to Maps, More Data, it lists the Open source generic routable map I downloaded to the SD card. As I enter address info , house number , then street number, it does not provide complete address information on the subsequent list so I have to manually look at each location to ensure the correct one is selected. Any suggestions you may have would be welcomed. Thanks again.
Hi I have done the update on my Garmin for the UK However it does not give me the option to insert the Post codes It only allows me to put in street addresses How do I change this setting Regards Pierre Viljoen

John Rosario for the US maps what selection did you chose? It only let me select my state for North America
Still works like a charm in 2020, thanks
2020 and it still works, thank you so much:) it would cost me £50 to update it on their app.
this is the way a tutorial should be made. very comprehensive.

Great tutorial, can confirm this still works 21/11/19
I did it a couple of days ago. It was very simple.
Worked fine for me (May 2019). Garmin Nuvi 200. Thanks!!!

The File OSM Generic Windows.exe file is a self extracting file. If you don't want to use Winzip, Winrar, etc. It's an exe file instead.
Thanks a lot
It works fine although some places names are not correct but mostly it's accurate

Thank you so much for the nice and useful information,
In the past when I updated, I just connected Nuvi to USB and accessed root to update map.
Thank YOU so much 😊 such an informative and easy to follow video

The OSM map for my state (Georgia) really REALLY sucked. Couldn't find even basic addresses. My 2010 Garmin map is better and more reliable. Too bad.

So the Garmin download site reported to me that my map would be available to me for download in 661 days???? Not very helpful.
Hi I have done the update on my Garmin for the UK
However it does not give me the option to insert the Post codes It only allows me to put in street addresses
How do I change this setting Regards Pierre Viljoen
Thx pal you saved the GPS, works fine in a Garmin Nuvi 245W. Just a question, how I can update the speed signals and the speed warnings ? with the old map I got it but with the new one not, I tried to update the GPI but doesn't works. Regards.
Speed workings is one of premium features of Sat Nav. So far I've not came across free option.
Its not giving me a option for what country to select . Will you go there and check it out and see if you are still getting maps ?
It bricked my model 255W . Bravo
The maps have worked great thank you! but is there a way to get postcodes on there? It is not letting me search postcodes through the OSM maps.
but this my favorite RUclips video
Very helpful video. Thank you so much.
Thanks! Wonderfull tutorial! I am downloading...it is a little bit slow but is working. I will let you know! Thanks again1
Hi.
I did use this for a few days, but unfortunately the image does not do postcodes. I go to all my jobs using the postcode on the company worksheet.
I have downloaded a csv file of all GB postcodes (over a million), just need to know how to add them to the image file.
I use Linux, and have installed QMapshack and MKGmap, but can't find out from the web if I can do this.
Works great and easy to do thanks
What does the new style look like? does it slow down the device?
Tried this out and the map is only available for 120 HOURS. The expected delay, according to the received e-mail is 664 DAYS.
Totally useless.
