I bought a used Garmin Nuvi many, many years ago (from Craigslist; I think I paid about $60 for it, and that was a great deal back then). As cell phones came along and were able to easily replace my Garmin, I kept it anyway. Now, some 20 or 30 years later, I still use it occasionally, like when I'm traveling long distance by car and I don't want to have my phone tied up by using it as a GPS; in that case, Garmin Nuvi to the rescue! And, all these years later, I still get free map upgrades, just as Garmin promised. Thank you, Garmin. Great company. I love their smart watches, too.

I like to use my old Garmin Nuvi the exact one in this video so that big tech isn't tracking every journey I make, and also because sometimes I go on camping trips and these often take me outside cell range. Easier just to click than to download maps. This is a huge help as my maps were updated 10 years ago and are missing a lot of key items. IMPORTANT UPDATE: After a lot of frustration and trial and error I have discovered the following with a Garmin NUVI 1350: * IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED OR UPDATED THE GARMIN MAPS ON YOUR GARMIN USING AN SD CARD there will be a "Map" directory that the Garmin utility created on the SD card when the Garmin utility updated the maps. Do NOT create a "Garmin" directory - just delete everything from the Map directory then upload the .IMG files to the "Map" directory. It's working great for me! When I copied into the "Garmin" directory it would only load one map IMG file. When I coped into the "Map" directory it loaded multiple image files and they are the ones from Open Street Map. Hope this helps someone!!!
Thank you for this video. I have my sister's nüvi 760, and Garmin wants to charge me $89.99 for maps. Fortunately, this Garmin is newer has no issues with files larger 2GB. Downloaded the maps. Joined the files as you explained. Copied the files directly to my 8GB SanDisk class 10 SD card. Inserted the SD card into the Garmin. Turn on the Garmin. The Garmin started loading the maps. I went to Tools ---> Settings ---> Map ---> Map Info , and verified that the Open Map Chest maps were the maps being used.
My girlfriend's car's AC does not work, and she has a 16 hour long road trip coming up. Her phone overheats and shuts off, so using it for GPS wasn't an option. I spotted a Garming Nuvi 780 for $5 at a local thrift store, and was dismayed to find the map updates were paywalled/unavailable. Your tutorial saved me a huge headache. Thanks!
What do you see as a big difference between OSM that you spoke about in the video above and the Garmin inbuilt City Navigator maps? I would certainly appreciate the Automatic Lane guidance and also the Junction view if that would work in OSM maps as well. Do these older Garmin devices do better than old smartphone in acquiring GPS signal? Many of older smarphone GPS simply stops working or working acceptably, due to changes made in GPS.
I cannot speak for older smartphones, but once a signal has been found with an older Garmin GPS, i've never lost signal unless driving through a long tunnel, which is normal
Super useful. How do I find out the file size / number of files restrictions for my Nuvi 2569 LMT. Also are there any differences between the Garmin supplied maps and the OpenMapChest versions? Do they look the same / have the same info? Cheers again!
I would check with Google. Usually the file size and the map data itself (excluding any requirement for any Garmin map licence)... Both will work and get you to where you need to go, but they are not the same, no.
Hello Thank you for the procedure to get the maps. I have a Oregon 450 and the SD card was corrupted so I had to format the card. I lost my Garmin City Navigator, so I downloaded Canada map from Open map chest and then open it with QB.torrent on the 4G SD card in a folder Garmin but it does not show up. The process worked fine for me when adding the Mexico map onto my Garmin 255W using an external 2GB SD card. My 255W gave me road instructions from Portland, OR to Cancun, Mexico (66hrs and ~3850 miles). Did you add your files into a "Garmin" folder (in the base directory)? Was the SD card formatted to Fat32 (as it should be)? I’ll be getting a larger SD card in a few days and will be adding updated US and Canada maps. If I have trouble with this I’ll report come back and report about it - but I have no reason to believe I’ll need to. @@rjrobbins2
I have managed to put USA NE on my 2022 Zumo 346 by following your instruction as far as downloading the torrent files. however when I come to try to join the regions I get an error file saying the "header length not even.. Tried dowloading again but same issue.. I renamed the USA NE file to gmapsupp.img, not sure id I can remame the others supp1 supp2 etc

I can see why you didn't bother to try and update the nuvi 360 (one of the ones you showed) because garmin express doesn't recognize this device, they no longer support this older device, so why did you give the impression it could be upgraded with garmin express?

Maps are old. Can't find 2 of fhe addresses I tried. Worthless maps. Not sure if the official Garmin maps would be any better. They don't date their maps before you buy them. So current for them might be years old.
Honestly, this video goes in all directions from wanting to do too many things at once! Instead, you should have focused on ONE task and explained how to do it! In the end, this video goes in all directions at once, and becomes useless! Sorry!
Similar to @Bills5423 problem below, I've downloaded Western Europe, followed all the steps and unzipped (‘OpenMapChest Western Europe.gmap') into its own folder as per your vid but now I have hundreds of folders within the OpenMapChest Western Europe.gmap folder, but all containing odd files?? I got as far as 7:15 on your video "..extract into their own separate folders".. but I don't have any maps extracted into their own separate folders, only the hundreds of folders containing 'stuff'.. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

You can actually just combine the 4 maps and rename the bigger US south map instead of splitting it 3 and 2 for the entire maps. saves you a few steps
You could certainly do that on later devices with more lenient requirements.

i extracted the openmapchest folder(for Europe) and i doesn t have the img file just a bunch of folders (over 150)

Perhaps re-trace your steps. The common step people do is forget to create the Garmin folder

Maps are old. Can't find 2 of fhe addresses I tried. Worthless maps.
Not sure if the official Garmin maps would be any better. They don't date their maps before you buy them. So current
for them might be years old.
Of course they are not old lol. Open maps are updated weekly, if not more frequently.
I'm going back to Carmen because on Google maps they are shit now and I'm pretty sure they're going to start putting ads more and more

Similar to @Bills5423 problem below, I've downloaded Western Europe, followed all the steps and unzipped (‘OpenMapChest Western Europe.gmap') into its own folder as per your vid but now I have hundreds of folders within the OpenMapChest Western Europe.gmap folder, but all containing odd files??
I got as far as 7:15 on your video "..extract into their own separate folders".. but I don't have any maps extracted into their own separate folders, only the hundreds of folders containing 'stuff'..
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Don’t bother,the graphics are so bad on older satnavs you are better off with a free version on your phone from play store
