  • In total, the Queen Mother was a widow for 50 years of her life. During that time, she became known for two things: extravagance and an unpaid tab that ran into the millions.

She brought new blood into the family. The Bowes-Lyons were aristocrats but not close to royal. It also reconnected the Royal Family to Scotland. The same goes for Princess Mary's marriage. The Lascelles were an old wealthy English family. After WWI there was still a lot of anti German sentiment. Changing the name to Windsor was a solid first step but not nearly enough. The Duke of Gloucester's marriage was also very popular. His wife Alice is the longest lived royal. She beat The Queen Mother by over a year.

The media in the UK have traditionally been on friendly, cooperative terms with the British royalty and have turned a blind eye, made excuses, silenced or been reigned in by threats of legal action, so that they would not report unflattering, image busting stories of the royal family. Not so with the overseas, foreign press and investigative writers. The legal jurisdiction and gag orders do not extend, nor are legally recognized beyond the UK borders. Much to their dismay!

India, Pakistan and many over countries would have no democratic structure and would be even more backwards. Wow. I wonder if this had any bearing on Elizabeth's penchant for frugality. Though I also do wonder if this has been blown out of context and the cause of the late queen mother's partying was for much needed diplomatic schmoozing purposes to maintain the required political relations to keep the realm stable in the greater political landscape.

Yes , she may have counted the chickens in the freezer, or whatever, because she didn't want the servants to steal anything, plus the harshness of the war is hard to shake, but NOT because she didn't want to live ,or have her meals and houses prepared, as she chose! 🙄

And in contrast we have all those cleverly written TV shows and movies that help sustain the efficient propaganda of a romanticized and glamorous and even heroic, patriotic view on monarchy, nobility and the high classes. And they really do work, they even fascinate those people around the world whot don’t even have at least that very specific kind of birth’s attached (basically useless as per personal merit) privilege. Because they know that the most efficient road to the commoners’ heart is their own secret (or outspoken) desire to resemble them, making the fantasy part of their own personal or common identity and even their own ethnocentric, national pride. So many tactics to mention. Giving lesser titles to those who may seem to be seen as prominent social figures is another way of seducing and bribing logic with fantasies. BUT, as long as it seems to work, much, much worse countries can live with leeches, why wouldn't Britain retain theirs.

With her daughter's support, the dowager queen successfully carved out a new and hedonistic life for herself in her new royal position as HM The Queen Mother.
She loved being a working royal to the end, making public appearances, meeting people and revelling in her new image as the mother of the nation. It was quite an achievement. She was widowed far longer than she was married, and after losing the 'top job' to her daughter on the King's premature death, she might have faded from public life. But that was not her style!
The Queen Mother saved the best till last, and enjoyed a glorious final act, healthy, vigorous and fun loving to the end. The secret of her success? She loved people, and never lost her curiosity.
She also played a very important role as a strong, loving maternal influence on her grandson Charles, the future king. His own mother Queen Elizabeth ll was frequently absent, and his beloved Grannie happily stepped into the breach, sharing her love of nature and even teaching him fly fishing. But most important was the emotional support, wisdom and continuity she gave him. They remained close for the rest of her life.

    I don't believe this for a second.
The bills would go to the incumbent Queen(her daughter)
I'm sure that anyone could calculate how extravagant she was between the time she was widowed to the time she passed away, but that doesn't mean that suppliers were not paid.
I very much doubt that anyone would have been left out of pocket.
If you calculate $8,000,000 over roughly 48 years that works out @ $3200 a week (not allowing for inflation in the early days).
The British Royal family are simply not like that.
Tarnishing the Family name of Windsor would never be tolerated.

I have read that HM Queen Elizabeth II covered her overdraft countless times over after her Accession in 1952.
After all, who could or would ask The Queen Mother to rein in her spending!? She was well-loved and well taken care of, til her death.
This litany makes mention of the final balance.
