That looked like an amazing trip Derek. Good for you for making it a priority to check these kinds of adventures off of your bucket list. Some excellent tarp hangs as well! I also appreciated your shot framing and storytelling on this one. Well done! Glad to see that you had an A, B, and C plan to account for unpredictable weather. Good call on not rushing from destination to destination. You seemed very relaxed and in control despite your many challenges. Thanks for taking us along. 👍👊
It was an amazing trip, and looking forward to start planning my 2025 trips, this one will be hard to top! It was definitely a hard trip but having backup plans and knowing the distances that I can do helps to keep me calm even when things get tough Been practicing my tarp setups so I can set them up quickly with storms rolling in 😅, a tarp is only as good as how fast you can pitch it when seconds count.
The Berg would definitely be nice to paddle the other way 😅 (with the current), a lot of the rapids and Swift's are easily runnable and you will make good distance. The walleye was delicious, it's one of my favorites, right up there with brook trout 😋
😊thanks, happy the video was inspiring, I definitely recommend going up there , but maybe go after bug season 😅 And btw, you were right about the drive up there, the scenery along the east and north shore of Superior was amazing 🤩
And here I was thinking I am just an anonymous dude when I drive around 😂. I remember that Timmies stop in Wawa, I just woke up from sleeping in the back of the car 😂 Looking forward to your trip video when it comes out, always solid content!! I guess you were in Wabakimi the same week as Eze
@@DerekSOutdoors the logo on your canoe gave it away lol. Yeah I actually almost ran into Eze when I was out there. We missed each other by just a few hours.
@kevinthewild I thought people would just think "DSO" was a canoe rental shop 😂 I was joking with Eze that he spent less time flying over here and making his way to Wabakimi than my 18 hour drive from Toronto 😂
Incredible. What a great intro to the park, glad you were able to scratch it off it off your bucket list. Wild weather glad you kept safe, and still had some great weather. Felt like I was right here with ya and making 2nd guess my temgami plan 😂 Like the new camo shoes💪🏽.
Thanks! Bringing people along with me on the journey was the feeling I was going for! It was pretty cool just to be in that remote of a place. Next time I'll try to plan for a fall trip so I can film and relax in peace without swarms of mosquitoes and maybe train or fly in to see a different part of the area My old shoes finally started to deteriorate after 4-5 years of hard use and camo was the only colour they had in my size... I was worried I would lose my shoes when I took them off... They'd Just blend into the forest and gone into the abyss 🤣
A wonderful place eh? and what a difference a week makes in terms of the bugs between our two trips eh? I was able to get around sometimes without swarms of mosquitoes 😅
Thanks! It was a great trip out there I think next will be going further north to Yukon or the other territories to catch some greyling and lakers on the fly 🤩 But I will always go back to Algonquin for brookies in spring, there is no place like it for the brook trout fishing!
@@DerekSOutdoors Feel the same about Algonquin . Given the right time of year and route it can also be quite remote . I do some good walleye fishing there too. 3 lbers in the evening
The fishing was great, a lot of the fishing didn't make it to the final cut of the video. I saw some people, closer to the access point and up on whitewater lake where there are some lodges and it is a more frequently travelled lake.
Thanks Jeff, it was a great trip out there. The fishing was good, a lot of it doesn't even make it into the final film or else it would have been a 4 hour video of just catching fish 😂
Thanks Greg, glad you enjoyed it, it was a great trip and next time I will go back to explore more of the area or maybe complete the unfinished business from this trip!! 😁
Thanks Jay 😁 yeah better to be safe and change to a more sensible route than to get stuck out in a dangerous situation! Now that I got a taste I am going to go back to explore the other areas, or maybe deal with the unfinished business from this trip 🙃 53:04 was a pretty awesome shot, all about patience and luck on that one 😅, just so happen to strike center of the frame
Thanks for watching! I dont carry a full sized spare paddle, I have a sleeve for my fishing net which turns it into a paddle in case I drop my paddle in the water
@ good idea I carry one of the collapsible ones when on solo trips. Otherwise I just look at my partner and say looks like your going to have to get us out of this mess😁
hahaha I am going to have to try that little trick when I go in my tandem boat next time ;) It will give me more time to fish from the front of the boat hehe
Brand new sub, loving your content Derek! We did a similar route as your plan B (check my series out if interested). Did you camp literally on Best Island and not go to Wendell Beckwith's cabin?!
Oh, I am going to have to check out your video, can never get enough wabakimi content and ideas for future trips. And yes I made it to wendells place, it was pretty cool. Originally I wasn't going to go there because it was on the other side of the island, but glad I changed my route because I got to see the cabins before they deteriorate even more.
@@DerekSOutdoors Pretty cool place. Did you find that the visitors book was there when you were there? it was gone when we were there in July. Would highly recommend the route I took, through White Water Lake, to White Clay, down to Cliff lake and out via the Pikitiguishi which you can drive up to (we flew into White Water Lake). Cliff Lake is just epic. You were pretty unlucky with the wildlife though.
I did not see a visitor book while I was at the cabin, maybe it was hidden? Next time I go back definitely going to try a train or fly in trip, just depends on where I want to go and what I want to see, cliff lake is definitely on the agenda.
@DerekSOutdoors yeah, the book should be in (from Joe Robinet's video) in the tin which appears in your video. We had a good look around couldn't see it. Shame, think someone has nicked it. Pretty cool place though!

The Berg is on our bucket list so we are thankful you changed your route. I can almost taste that walleye 🎣

Oh wow this is such an amazing video!!!! I love it!!
Thanks 😄, it was a pretty great adventure up in the middle of nowhere
wow, what an amazing trip, great scenery fishing and I wish I could go to Wabakimi one day too!
It was a really amazing trip up there, you can definitely go. just going to take a little bit of planning to get maps and make a route 😀
What an amazing adventure! Your videography is fabulous and the trip was epic. Making us want to head up to Wabakimi ASAP!
😊thanks, happy the video was inspiring, I definitely recommend going up there , but maybe go after bug season 😅

Nice trip Derek! I actually spotted your canoe / car at a Tim Horton's in Wawa on my way back from Wabakimi. Now I know where you were heading 😄

Looked like some really good walleye fishing!. You got some beautiful shots. Did you come across anyone else?
The fishing was great, a lot of the fishing didn't make it to the final cut of the video.

Great trip Derek! 4 day's of storms means sometimes you have call an audible on the route.... 53:04 was an awesome shot and great fishing as always.

Great trip thanks for sharing it with us. I do have a question. Do you carry any kind of backup paddle in case you lose the double?
