    A white Silicon well pallet like the fidget popper from last year would be ideal as the acrylic just pops out once it’s dried.

      I agree. Finding a white one however is like looking for a straight banana. And I can’t understand people buying multicoloured ones for speedpaints. It’s hard enough to see the colour without dripping it on a silicon rainbow. 🤣

    As someone who moves their painting station around between home and my place of work, this is an amazing tool kit. Its perfect for starting out, and, while definitely needing some improvement (noted the same issues you had), it seems like it does its intended purpose. Definitely not a game changer per se, but a great tool kit for those that are on the go.

    Man, I love your take on things. I DO love the gear acquisition aspect of our hobby. But I like one tool, that does the best job and lasts because it’s quality…not so much 20 of slightly varying versions.
    I never would have considered the black mixing trays until after purchase.

    • @thestateofplay2023
      @thestateofplay2023  7 месяцев назад

    Thank you for the thorough review!
    I usually shy away from things like this marketed for the hobby, but it's actually a price I'm willing to pay for something I've been looking to do just this. AND YOU SAID IT SEEMS DURABLE, WOOHOO! I like being able to stack away all my related tools (paint cups, wet palette) together, plus the brush holders actually look genuinely usable, which will be a new tool for my setup. It'll be nice having some smaller wet palettes I can squirrel away when not in use. I may divide them by project, or one for me and one for my brother, then keep my previous homemade jank one as a backup or use it for something else.
    I saw they have a green & sand colour option instead of blue & black. That definitely helps the visibility problem, but I still despise the idea of cleaning paint out of the plastic wells. However, I think those'll be useful for storing bits & basing materials. I currently lack such a thing.
    I'm perfectly happy with not having something meant to carry all of my tools and models in one. Too heavy a container can be just as much of a hurdle as space for me, and the compact size and specificity of its role means it'll be an asset at my all around craft table as well at the twice monthly Warhammer meetups.

    It's an interesting idea (it just needs a little tweaking to be great for mini painters), if I had to move my products from A to B every time i paint. But like you, I've got a dedicated painting area so.
    Some things I'd need to be able to use it at all.
    1) A proper well palette in white PVC (I still use the OLD GW ones that came with their paint station and love them) with wells that aren't bigger than the RGG Wavy addon.
    2) Bigger size so brushes will fit.
    3) I'd also love some paint storage tray. I mean, if you can't store your paints with the palette and brushes, i can just get 2 plastic containers and my RGG palette instead.
    (There is another product out there that I like, that features all my wants/needs in a handy format, but it's obviously more expensive. If I had been interested in taking my paints, brushes etc with me when I go on vacation etc.)
    I do love the brush holders though! And would happily buy something similar as a stand alone product.
    Always a pleasure watching your vids & happy to see you getting the recognition you deserve! Although honestly, I haven't had time to watch content at all lately. :'(

    I live near Cardiff but travel to Plymouth frequently for overnighters due to work. Quite like the idea of this for doing a bit of on-the-go light hobbying. I do have a proper toolbox but, if I’m only away 2-3 nights, I don’t really want to lug everything with me. I’m talking the sort of “finishing up a couple of models I was halfway through before I left” kind of hobbying. When you’ve got a spare hour.

    Did you try painting the black wells?
    They’re plastic after all. Some primer + white + gloss varnish ought to make them pretty darn usable.
    If the primer doesn’t stick, attacking it with a dremel for some light roughing ought to get the primer on there.
    AK Interactive actually sells gloss white primer (Dual Exo) as a single step possibility.
    Thanks for the info. I’m looking for a mobile solution and this is on my short list.

  • @PocketPigments
    @PocketPigments 7 месяцев назад +1

    Honestly I was sent one of these as well and couldn't really find much use for it beyond the top storage and water pots. The biggest problem to me is the fact that the wet palettes don't even work. The paper provided is very non-porous - none of the moisture soaks through. My paints were constantly drying on the palette after minutes, no matter how much water I put in the palette, or which orientation I used the paper in. And as you mentioned, the dry/well palettes are nearly useless for miniature painters both in how we use our paints and the fact that it's black which makes it hard to see a lot of colours.
    However the big water pots, storage space, brush hangers and wet palettes being condensed and transportable are great, for sure.
    I'm really conflicted on it. I want a nice, consolidated storage solution but I'm not 100% sold yet. Perhaps I will toss out the dry palette trays (I don't see myself ever using them) and cut my own wet palette paper, it would solve most of my problems. Just feels bad throwing part of the product out and cutting my own wet palette paper in order to make it usable.

    • @thestateofplay2023
      @thestateofplay2023  7 месяцев назад +1

      The pots are good. Storage is good. Silicon brush cleaner I s cool. Brush holders are great. The wet palette sponge is good. Just swap the paper for supermarket baking sheet.
      The well pallette is terrible but great for storing spare sprue bits like guns and weapons.
      I just improvised. 🤣

    • @PocketPigments
      @PocketPigments 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@thestateofplay2023 haha agreed for sure. I think it's a useful product, but just not specifically targeted at miniature painters. It definitely requires a little improvisation to make it work for our purposes. And that's fine for some, hobbyists are resourceful animals :P

    • @thestateofplay2023
      @thestateofplay2023  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think it’s a product for the Asian market for gouache paints. But to target the western market they’ve Kickstarted to mini painters. Not a bad plan per se, but I think talking to mini painters up front may have been a better shout. I’m curious whether they take anyones reviews into account. That would make a huge difference to the product AND their brand.

    • @PocketPigments
      @PocketPigments 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@thestateofplay2023 absolutely, I got that impression as well (that it’s primarily designed for a different market). They are definitely a smaller team so I have a feeling changes won’t be made to this product anytime soon. But I would definitely implore them to look at designing a separate product specifically for the western market once they’re done with this kickstarter. There’s definitely some good ideas here, and the price point is far lower than I had expected. If they can tweak it a little bit for the western market and keep the price down I bet these things would fly off the shelf :)

    Very good and very fair review there. I was also sent one to review, hoeever, because I work away from home mine is still under testing. When I get home Ill be able to see how good the wet palette is.
    Very good point about using it how you wish to use it. I am more along the lines of scale model painting so the wash issue doesnt come into it as much for me. I use the wells for oil paints though and I agree that black isnt the best colour. For me the solutiion would perhaps to offer that section in white, grey or black.
    Didnt know about the stickers, and that is going to bug me no end.
    But yes, very nice and fair review.

      I do like it. But the well palette thing is such a shame. With oils (not as washes) it should work great. Even watercolours. But acrylic mini paints really need rounded wells, ideally silicon.
      Come back and link your review or tell me. I’d be interested.

    Products like this are more useful as a gauge of judging the honesty of hobby channels, than anything else really. Im happy that you tactfully didn’t endorse it basically.
    I’m not an industrial product designer, I’m a graphic designer but even the few courses on product design I took as part of my overall training, are enough to allow me to say that this product is useless for many reasons.
    The core idea is not a bad one but the execution is not good at all. It’s as if this was designed for a different purpose altogether and now they are trying to reuse the basic design by throwing in some ‘’hobby related’’ artifacts, or the designer in charge never painted a miniature in his whole life and didn’t even bother to ask someone who did.
    Judging from the black palette, this strikes me as a gadget for people painting with heavy body acrylics or most probably gelly gouache and poster paints popular in Asia. Even the black tongues suggest that they are there so that you won’t wipe your loaded brush at the border of the paint well, polluting the gelly gouache color layer in the bordering well.
    The storage doesn’t fit brushes and it’s too shallow for most of the basic tools. The outside brush racks are a nice idea but I doubt they can survive transport.
    The wet palette is only good if it can seal air-tight. And that’s the main reason why a common Tupperware, or a Ferrero Roche box, is most of the times performing better than many fancy smansy palettes costing x10.
    I saw that the suggested price for the whole kit will be at more or less 40 euros. 40 kicks maybe…
    Products of this kind and at this price range are de facto targeting a very small part of a very small market. Only the ones with top quality and designed specifically to meet the needs of a sort of posh part of the hobby community, can justify their existence and avoid being accused as scam schemes.

      I get the feeling this is a goache pallette for landscape artists and some thought, “hey, miniature painters use paint, right?” But didn’t actually ask any.
      My kids love it though. And they actually enjoy tidying it away so I get no mess and a stress free clean up!!!
      That’s the new market!

    • @joek600
      @joek600 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@thestateofplay2023 The real question is…. Would you pay 40 euros to buy it for your kids?
      I did some digging and now I’m even more convinced that this was intended to be used with gelly gouache or poster paints. They are very popular in China, Japan and Korea. But that again makes it’s intended pricing completely off.
      I’m saying this cause usually when we say gouache, we think big brands with products aiming at artists or art students. In Asia most of these paints are kind of low grade, not lightfast, cheap media and very accessible. I mean the only reason the old hand painted anime backgrounds were done in these paints, was that they were used in big quantities and they were super cheap. It’s like using these big bottle liquid gouache made for kindergarten kids. So this is a quite expensive set up for such cheap paints.
      I might be too suspicious here, but my gut feeling is that this thing is already made for use in the local market, but before it’s normal circulation they try to market it at the ‘’Hobby suckers’’ that are used to buy simple art supplies for 10x their value, so they won’t even notice. They will get what money they can from them and then proceed to market it at a better price for it’s intended target group.

    As you so rightly point out, this appears to be a product for landscape artists that they are trying to shoehorn into the mini painting hobby. The black paint wells and water pots are entirely unsuitable for minis. The fact that the brush storage is so small is laughable. Basically, the product needs to be larger and the mouldings in white rather than black. Not something that I will be looking at backing.

    I like hobby innovation but this very much felt like reinventing the wheel. Every issue it claims to solve another issue takes it's place. Not to mention this only seems good for those with little space or on the go. Both of which there are many options for.
    Not to mention the regular issues crowd funding is subjected to. They already have the product and packaging, so some amount of production capabilities. I don't see why they need our money upfront.
    So much of this product shows issues. Most would be better off with a different product. Having gone from having to keep my paints and stuff stored when not in use, this product does nothing new that a bag and containers can't. Plus hard to pronounce name from Hong Kong screams scamazon.

      @thestateofplay2023 @thestateofplay2023 while yes, as a foreign language, it can be difficult for us, there is a track record on Amazon for companies to pop up with weird names sell a generic product for some time then disappear once the bad reviews have come in just to appear with a new name right away.
      I just took a look at their website, and under point 2, it is blatant false advertising. There's literally paint on the brush that they "prove" their silicone insert gets more paint out of. Meanwhile, the regular brush is just wet and doesn't even look used. Plus, in the before and after, there is a mini, a sprue, and a cutting mat in the before. It disappears in the after. The mat and sprue literally can't fit in it. Point 4 is also blatantly wrong. At least in terms of our acrylics. Ours are very susceptible to separating and over thining/drying out when left in a wet pallet. I don't even trust paint left for a couple of hours in mine, and from what I hear, that's universal. I'm going to stop searching for issues. It seems misleading at best.
      They also use very generic language for their product. Let alone a proper product name. It seems more like a prototype name. I think we are just to assume it's called "all-in-one modular art box." Which screams back to Amazon with run-on titles to hit those keywords.
      I honestly can't even find who this product is meant for. It's very generic in "you use paint, get this thing"

      Again I can’t disagree. I think you’ve hit a lot of valid points. But to play devils advocate here I’ve used this for 3 weeks now, am a fully qualified product designer, engineer and executive creative director with 30 years experience. Much of the stuff you say is right. They’ve bent the truth a bit in their marketing. Although from HK, I’ll bet it’s made in Shenzen and considering it’s already made I can’t see the point in a Kickstarter.
      Being honest, I’ve never bought a single thing from Kickstarter - ever. I struggle with trusting anyone there and hate the idea of paying only to wait months or more for something that might never come.
      I’ll probably use the water pots as the silicon works really well. And I’ll get use out of the wet pallettes. But as a system - I don’t think I’m the audience.

      I understand your fear. And the basis of your comments is mostly fear. From an outsider view it is scary. But I am have a very different view on kickstarters than most. I have multiple accounts at super-backer. I dig in deep and speak with these people personally. Though I can understand them probably becuase I spend more time talking to asians than anyone else, i do think their english is good. While talking to these exact people I have found them to be overly informative. I’ve had to ask them to block and retract sensitive information from others and myself lol.
      Anyway, kickstart is the place where startups play Russian roulette with only two chambers. They get loans and take advantage of connections to be in a favorable position. The kickstarter should pay for the loan at a slight loss and the project is a fail. But these people usually keep pushing and pushing out of fear of a public failure. I’ve coached so many not to make these mistakes.
      You’ll find them young and in debt. But they truly believe they can make something great, or very good enough lol.
      My point is I’ve talked with them. I’ve seen the product. I’ve seen the molds and paperwork. This is a real product. They are wasting too much money to fake it.
