- UPDATE! THE TRAIL IS CLOSED NOW!
A challenging path through Moanalua Valley (Middle Ridge) to Stairway to Heaven, also known as Haiku Stairs. The stairway was built for the U.S. Coast Guard to allow access to the LOAN radio antenna. Hawaii closed down the stairway to the public in 1987 because the stairs were becoming worn and dangerous. This is a video of the full lengths trail starting at the Moanalua Neighborhood Park up the Middle Ridge to the top of the Haiku Stairs. If you decide to take the challenge, go at your own risk and please, be safe.

If you have any questions about the trail please leave them in the comments. Mahalo for watching.
Thank you for your video awesome I’ve hiked the stairs back in the early 80’s and it’s amazing and it’s the ONLY SAFE Way to get up there Moanalua trail is very dangerous and risky like I said the stairs is VERY SAFE but THANK YOU for sharing your videos
Thank you. Unfortunately the Moanalua Valley Middle Ridge is closed now too.
My son and I hiked this on 6/13/23. This video was very helpful in the preparation. Thank you.
Thank you. Great to hear that you enjoyed your trip.
Completed the hike Wednesday 5/08/24 thank you for your help. This was forsure a challenging hike started @4:10 with it raining and the wind speeds I questions myself a lot of the times wanting to go back but because some of the ropes weren’t there that was in the video. Made it to the top with no regrets! Tips for anyone else just be prepared with being comfortable with being unconfrortable!
I am glad you had a good time.
I'm going in September this is a big help! Thank you
I am glad it helps, enjoy!
That was an amazing video. Thank you for the tips at the end.
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it.
That was simply amazing!
Thank you!
I'm hiking this in just over a week's time and videos like this help me know what to expect! Music selection is also amazing! Thanks for making this
Wow, great job Toby! Too bad the weather wasn’t the best so you could enjoy the view. Very tough hike. You made it look easy.
Thank you Carlos. Yeh, my arm almost fell off on the top. 😅
Just did it yesterday and love it!
Good job!
Did this hike with my best friend last Saturday (10/7/23), just watched this video now. By far one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen, no pictures or videos can truly capture the experience. Definitely check weather conditions, went up with 7-13mph winds, watch your footing, and if you need breaks, take them. We finished the whole loop in 7 and a half hours. Also the rope in sections 32:52-33:06 is not there anymore so be careful, some parts are slick. Awesome video!
My wife and I were there today...
We went up to 23:16.
We were then greeted by a couple that flew passed us very early on the trip, but this time they were coming back down.
We asked "hey, how was it?"
They said, "turn around, the conditions are absolutely horrible. There is no grip or footing and it isn't as safe as it used to be. The drizzling has accumulated and made it too dangerous".
I didn't ask them about the rope... Or when they turned around, but are you saying that the rope at the mark you mentioned isn't there at all anymore? That may be why they turned around.
What's odd is that at the beginning of our trip, we ran into a young couple that said they did the whole thing. If they weren't lying... Then I find it nuts how they were able to while raining,, with running shoes on, and no rope.
Thanks, great video of the hike. Piece of cake, right? Thanks for the great tips at the end.
Thank you for watching. Depends on the weather. Good luck!
Tolle, lange Wanderung, wie der Titel sagt fast bis zum Himmel 💪🏻 . Der Aufstieg lohnt sich aber auf jeden Fall, eine der besten Plätze auf Hawaii 🌺 danke Tobi für den super Film
Vielen Dank. Bis bald.
Im glad u made it. 🤙🤙🤙🤙 yall have a good mornning
Thank you.
@@TobyVisuals808 your welcome
We tried the back way a few weeks back got about 3/4 of the way up right around where the ropes start. It rained off and on but ultimately we decided it was too narrow and slippery and way too dangerous to continue . I think I could have done it by myself but my wife couldn’t do it. Plus I think if we went to the top we’d be hiking the bottom in the dark.
Good call. Safety first. Also some of the ropes you see in this video have been removed recently.
Thank You frm New Zealand 🇭🇲
God bless Stay safe ☝️☝️☝️
See you n Sept stairway to heaven
Hawaii 💥💥💥💥💥
Enjoy your trip. Aloha.

Is there any other signs after that first yellow one at around 14 mins that you have to make sure you turn on? We hiked this yesterday and accidentally went the wrong way and hiked a different trail
No there is no sign since it is not an official trail. You can see the split at 14:44 where you have to turn right and the trail will get steep immediately.
Better hurry if you're going to do the hike from the Kaneohe side. The stairs are being dismantled in a few weeks. Too many hikers have tromped through people's yards and houses to get to the bottom of the stairs.
how far is this hike? are you walking or riding a dirtbike?
9.2 Miles plus 2900ft elevation gain. Unfortunately they started to remove to stairs today. No dirt bikes allowed.
Are you still allow to hike the back side? I know the hike is illegal and the stairs are being taken down but the backside still open for people?
Yes, but it's not an official trail so hike at your own risk.
Thinking about doing this @4am, I won’t have to worry about cops doing the hike from this side? And on the way down will I have to worry?
No cops on the back way, only if you take the stairs down. Also it will be muddy and slippery at the moment. Some of the ropes you see in this video have been removed.
@@TobyVisuals808 sounds good I appreicate the help with that being said should I be fine in just some regular hiking shoes maybe some gloves to get a grip on those steep areas since there no rope?
@@GPLEXUS I always bring micro-spikes for the way down when it is wet. Also don't miss the turns at 14:40. Many walk right by!!!
RIP Daelynn Moke Pua ✝️
I’m going in June and I’ve done ridgeline hikes before but nothing quite this long and steep. Any general advice for it?
Make sure to check the weather before. Even on good weather days it can be very muddy and slippery. Micro-spikes will help. Also bring gloves the ropes are super dirty.
is there any way to get there without the rope? i cant do the rope
Unfortunately not. Thera are other routs to get to the summit but they are harder.
Hi. How long did this hike take you. And what time did you start???
About 2.5-3h to get up to the top. I would start as early as possible, around sunrises especially now during the hot season.
@@TobyVisuals808 Your complete footage is awesome because it made me feel like I was hiking the whole time while I was watching for 40 minutes laying in bed. Because of your detailed video, I don’t think I will get lost 😂.
@@Traveljunkie01 There is only one place people get lost at 14:39. Don't miss that!
@@Traveljunkie01 The only place people get lost is at 14:39. Don't miss that!
@@TobyVisuals808 I actually screenshot it and took note of that, turn left . Thank you. Also, planning on going during thanksgiving week this year. I hope its not rainy season in Oahu that time. Also, I didn’t see the rope part in the video.
Can we start before sunrise like at 4am? If so, where can we park around this time?
Yes you can. Plenty of street parking. Just please keep is quiet. Plenty of retirees live in the area. Also it will be extremely muddy after all the rain.
How long did this take you round trip?
I normally plan on 6h. Depends on the weather condition.
Would you consider doing it alone? Or to unsafe? Can you hire a guide?
It depends on your hiking experience. Normally there are other hikers out there as well. If you need a guide try contacting www.hungaro-explorer.com
Is this hike possible without micro spikes ? Or is it to dangerous without it?
My son and I did it in June. It rained the whole way. We had good hiking shoes but no spikes. I don’t think they are absolutely necessary but might have helped.
Is 10 am a good time to start this hike?
No, way too hot. I normally start 30 min before sunrise.
I think its absolutely ridiculous that this is "legal" but the stairs arent. This is far more dangerous. Dont let the videos fool you. It gets worse year after year..

6. This is illegal, don't do it lol
😂 it was legal till it wasn’t. As soon as he stepped foot on the stairway, then it was a no no.
it is legal. this is the legal way.
