I'll say this again, I have said it before. Jony Ives! Since he has left Apple, it's like a completely different design philosophy. Apple has stopped trying to come up absurd designs that affect the functional user experience of the actual product. All the things you mentioned i.e. MacPro Trashcan, Magic Mouse, No ports, Touchbar all decisions that are being rolled back to get the actual functional experience better. And for once, I'm loving this new Apple!
I've also made that conclusion. He left in 2019. LITERALLY after he left, we started getting much more functional design. He left and we immediately started seeing better Macbook Pros that actually fit the Pro name. We got iPhones that actually do shit and are able to hold their own against Android phones respectively in all aspects.
Wow you are so right!! I never thought about that. Mac design/performance was such a step back from 2016-2019
And now apple is making thicker, more efficient products with insane performance. Absolutely loving it!!
It's possible and it appears that way but I would imagine Apple thinking a lot further into the future when it comes to products. It's not like they design everything they showed in the past year or so. But at any rate, as long as we benefit, I don't care what happens.
He’s still doing work for,Apple from his own company. In fact, Apple remains his largest customer. So,we really don’t know what he’s done for, them since he’s left. He’s also don’t some of the very best work Apple ever did.
Jobs passed away too. He was all about aesthetics too.
M1 Ultra... Instinct? A chip so fast it processes without your input.
:D
Dragonball vibes
best comment ever HAHAHAHA
You’re a dork…. And so am I. LOVE IT!
@@pr0ject25o1 If Apple doesn't go with the M1 Ultra Instinct or Ultra Magnus for it's Mac Pro, a little nerd-dork part of me will be devastated (though not surprised).
I'm tired of people complaining about the names Apple used. Just be thankful they're not using Sony style naming. The new chip could be called the "The Apple M1-PX-439-H2SSV4 chip!"
to be fair it would be more inline with playstation rather than their audio division
so Apple Chip 1 2, etc etc
Is that annoying for you. Do you call for help in forums to choose what color should you buy?
Exactly what we need, tech reviewers speaking about the product as is and not whining about the name of the product (also pointing @the verge)
lmao i died but u have a point 🫡
Make sure to get the Bravia series ‘ES’ Edition for best results. :-)
The ultra is two pounds heavier because of the copper heat sink instead of aluminum.
In my opinion, I can deal with an extra pound as long as the machines is cooled properly. As we know, a proper cooled chip has extreme potential. What do you think?
Yep, clearly this was filmed before Apple answer the question.
@@clacorson the extra weight is worth it. It's a desktop computer not moving around many times.
It's two pounds heavier.
@@aninditabasak7694 Thanks, I fixed my previous comment.
Now with M1 Ultra, the “max” it’s not max anymore.
Max ie, maximum they can get from the M1 architecture. Ultra means beyond the limit - they had to stitch two chips together to achieve that.
@@ghas4151 it’s a good point
@@ghas4151 Smartass ...... leave some women for us
They should have called it the M1+ Ultra
@@ghas4151 Maybe the Mac Pro will get the M1 Ultra Duo
All i can think about is the new 27inch iMac we didnt get.
I feel like they are gonna call the m1 chip for the mac pro "M1 Goliath" and they are gonna make it just a bunch of m1 maxes fused together. I can totally see Apple doing this
2027: Apple comes out with the M1 Exodia, you need to have 5 different Apple products with the chip in in your hand order to activate it but once you draw them all in the same hand, you immediately win the duel.
@@oddmerit6530 LMAO
Surely they should call it the M1 Voltron “Extreme Form”
@@nicklaskowalski When they run out of those adjectives they'll just call it the "m1 sexy" !
😅😅😅
Wouldn't it be crazy if Apple had built in a wireless magsafe charger in the top of the Mac Studio, so you could charge your phone there while you're working on something? And maybe for heat management, the wireless charging only activates, if the NFC chip of the iPhone talks to the magsafe system on the Studio when it detects that an iPhone is resting on its top... That would be nice imo
the option with the m1 ultra version has a copper heat sink instead of an aluminum heat sink in the m1 max version.
Does modularity mean you can connect as many mac studio boxes together as you want?
Question: Please tell us when using the Photoshop Magic Brush, is there any difference in performance between the Mac Studio Max Vs Ultra? The Magic brush uses GPU power so it should be much better on the Ultra. Thanks
M1 is the generation. There are four models of M1 so far, and max is one of them. Once all M1 models Are launched, M2 will be launched. It is a very clever way to manage product variations. If you buy M1 ultra today, M2 will come soon, which is less in performance, so customers will not feel bad. So it will take more than a year for a model to become old generation.
Apple could have a BM and some people would say it was very clever
@@deViant14 Apple's success is not by luck but they are not angels also.
If only Apple would support MST we could daisy chain between monitors. Instead we are forced to plug every monitor into the back of the Studio. Maybe this is a feature they are holding back for second revision of Apple Silicone? Also missing from their display is a second Thunderbolt to achieve daisy chaining on their displays.
You can buy spiral conduit to cable manage behind desk to ground, so you have just a 1 to 2 foot lead from PC to behind desk, then run conduit down to last few feet where cables split off to various plugs.
I think what they meant by “modular” is the addition of extra ports
🤡
They meant “BYODKM” (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse)
Extra ports, yes. A typical Mac Pro Tower will have quite a few extra cards installed in the back (video capture cards, for example). When Apple talks about this being a "Modular Setup", it's kinda like the original mac compared to PCs of the late 80 / early 90s… those modems, zip drives, etc, etc on a normal PC would have been installed internally by the user, whereas with these Modular Mac Desktops they're thunderbolt / USBC devices that connect in with a cable and sit somewhere else on the desk.
Really, it's the same theory apple used with the G4 cube, the trashcan Mac Pro, and the original iMac from 1998 where it was no longer possible to install expansion cards inside your Macintosh.
@@waltonks8172 yeah that’s what they meant but calling it modular is dumb and misleading bc by that logic, all computers minus all-in-ones are modular when you can plug them into a display. “Modular” implies you can change the components in the mac studio so they shouldn’t have presented it like that
@@extra4542 Agree
Please call Dev2D on your studio.. everyone would love ❤️ if MKBHD and Dev talk on new stuff.
I can imagine these being the center of extremely high end studio workstations.
Imagine the amount of tracks running with stacks of effects in pro tools and logic pro.
A squid of thunderbolt docks coming out the back and routing to all the cables, as God intended it really.
Funny I think thin clients are the way God intended professional work. Certainly more scalable.
@@deViant14 I can agree with that.
I love all the Dave2D shout outs.
When did the Mac mini have an sd card slot?
what mic is Marques using?
I’m thinking a under-mount for a desk setup would be super badass u can keep your access in the front for sd card slot and might have better cooling. As well
When Apple finally comes out with a front facing port design “Macmini”, why on earth would you think of putting the box as a backpack on the display? Kind of defeats the reason for the design… Might as well wait and get an iMac pro with the M1 ultra (which is bound to come out one day, probably later in the year or next year) …
Is this thing gonna go inside a laptop if not whats it gonna do with that efficiency.
I really think we might get a "X1" instead of a M series chip for the Mac Pro considering they might have to redesign the Max chip for more Ultra Fusion links in order to attach more dies together.
Edit: This moniker could work well as it replaces the "Xeon" chips
Edit 2: This could be very likely now
If I remember it correctly, they said in the March event, that M1 Ultra is the last M1 chip. What I think is, that they are gonna redesign the M1 Max die with the latest features, that came from an A16 and then interconnect four of those redesigned M1 dies together to create a single chip, possibly called X1. The multithreaded performance is going to be unparalleled while they are going to beat both Intel's and AMD's chips in single threaded work loads for the next two years. Also, I think, that the top tier Mac is going to feature high speed cores only and use the A16 architecture with higher clocks. In my opinion, this is the most reasonable next step even when you consider game theory. If they are capable of delivering higher single threaded workloads they should deliver them as soon as possible, preferably in their top tier product using a distinct branding. X1 would sound fire.
@@jurajchobot possible but the M is for Mac so I think it could be MX1 or just MX Gen 1
@@mk_mason Ya most probably, but I was just thinking about it, they could probably use the "X" in line with the Xeon chips offered in the current Mac Pro. As in it would make more sense if they addressed it by saying that the X moniker replaces the "Xeon" in terms of a new performance standard and a differentiator like with Intel.
@@jurajchobot It really depends on the release schedule, if it's June/July it's gonna use the M1 arch, if it's late this year or next year, it might use M2 arch. But I do think that they might use the M2 arch base and use that to form derivatives that go into the macbooks, iPads and the Mac Studio moving forward, almost like a trickle down effect.
They should really make a special chip for the pros alone just like the Xeon was, something to distinguish it from all the others
I thought the "modularity" claim would manifest into an endlessly stackable system. Like.... physically stacking macs on each other. But it would require some form of an "Ultra-Connect" cable to tap into that Ultra-Fusion Architecture and actually realize such a "modular" system.
It looks alright , one thought comes to mind , with those small perforations around the bottom for the air inlet , how long is it going to take for dust to choke it up , not all environments are clinical dust free areas , and should we need to blow it out internally , how do we go about it , does it have a removable plate on the base ?
Good point
@@tpf352 Thank you .
Which mic is markiss using
Hey Marques! been following you since your NEXUS 5 review! Just commenting to say enjoying your videos more and more and they've been very helpful! Thanks
Apparently, online people think the "Modularity" is the IO, with the large selection of ports. I guess we'll have to wait to see what they mean by "modularity".
We don’t have to wait and see. It’s blindingly obvious. There is no internal expansion of any kind. You buy a particular configuration and that’s it. The only way it’s different from a non-modular iMac is that the monitor is separate. That’s it.
@@williamp6800 OK. I was just curious.
My concern is that the fan seems to be burried and difficult to service and clean. There also doesn’t seem to be any prefiltation. So that is going to be an ongoing problem of cleaning by design. Am I wrong?
randomly clicked on this video while another one was playing and my god the difference in quality is jarring. the audio is so ~crisp~
Do "M1 ultimate "sound good for another chip?
Hey but 12 south could make a mount that hooks it to the stand on the studio display. So you can reach the button still easy and not actually behind the monitor, but attached to the stand.
Congrats on your tech influencer of the year.
Yes, modular. What was that about I was expecting things to slot out and replace parts but your right I guess the IO was the only modular parts lol.
@mkbhd you have the Mac studio already, am sure your desk is clean now lol 😂😂😂
Now their users can scroll their social media even faster I guess
@08:50 Why not just mount the mac pro underneath the desk?
The interconnect between the two Max to make the Ultra goes up, so you can stack the Ultras on top of each other. Ultra 3 Floors?
Knowing Apple, the next level M1 chip may be called M1 Ultra Max, which is basically four M1 Max slapped together.
I can not wait for the videos on the main channel
Modular because you can make every peripheral the same shape and stack them together in a tower, you can stack a few computers into a supercomputer.
This seems so powerful... why even wait for the Mac Pro? What the hell will that be?
M 1 Hyper
The new Mac Studio tops out at 128GB of RAM. For an average desktop user, that’s huge.
But the current Mac Pro tops out at 1.5TB of RAM. Similar PC workstations top out at 2TB of RAM and we’re on the verge of having workstations that top out at 4TB of RAM.
For the computing tasks that require that much RAM, the Mac Studio isn’t powerful.
The next step: two M1 Ultras together.
🙂
Cable management tips?
Why can't all companies make their PC's power supply external in order to lower the weight & size of the PC?
I won't need a new Mac for a few years, but if I were to buy one it would be the Studio, and I would fabricate a bracket so I could bolt it underneath my standing table.
That feeling when a monitor has a more powerful SOC than the Apple TV
after doing it "subscription added" - "subscription removed" kept popping up in the left bottom corner for a solid 15 sec at least...
When he says "modular" he's comparing it to a MacBook and talking about peripherals (display, keyboard, input device).
It's a matter of perspective and a completely valid use of the word even if it's not the kind of modularity we'd all prefer. External vs internal modularity.
I agree. Its certainly more modular than an iMac which you basically have to give/throw away even though it has a perfectly good display that you may want to keep. Modularity doesn't always mean being able to open the thing up to add things.
At this point I feel like the graph choices are intentional to say “hey, don’t believe our graphs too much but this is what we were able to find internally”
I DGAF what they call them as long as they’re fast and work without problems. Cant wait until i see some real world tests on the studio max and ultra. I produce music and design so I’m leaning towards the Max version but it depends on how the actual testing ends up.
Ed from Tech Source said he would help out with Cable management if you need it
Off subject, I’ve been listening to podcasts the past few hours with some headphones.. and the quality of richness of your podcast is mind blowing. Well done 👏🏻
My guess is the big ship in the Mac pro will be named the P1
Is there a clip of PewDiePie reacting to MKBHD's setup??
Why do I feel like Ive seen this video before but its saying it was only uploaded today? Am I crazy?
Think about the thunderbolt ports are all hub ports, so with the max you can take the back four 40GBps ports to sixteen 40GBps ports!
On the ultra that’s 6 to 24 full speed thunderbolt ports!!
how about m1 ultimate?
Given that each Thunderbolt 4 port is 4 PCIe lanes, and they’ve got 6 of those on the ultra version *in addition* to 10GbE that has its own bandwidth to the chipset, I think that’s what they mean by “modular”. You can’t swap out your RAM or internal storage, but you can connect an absolute ton of beefy peripherals to this - something like 3x as many as a macbook pro could manage, given that if you want 10GbE on a docked MBP you’re already burning one of the tb4 ports on that alone.
That's a charitable interpretation, considering that they highlighted absolutely none of those possibilities or developed any peripherals specifically for it. I think that Mac Studio is a great looking computer, and I'm happy with my MacBook Pro 14 inch, but I think they simply meant "you can choose your own monitor!" which is pretty lame when describing the system as "modular". They literally could have just omitted it and kept it the same. It just felt like they invited criticism for no reason
I wasn't really trying to be charitable to apple here in their marketing, I agree the word was somewhat muddled and vaguely applied; they didn't actually *say* what they meant. I am just saying that for me, personally, this level of I/O bandwidth is what I would want in a "modular" system; the hypothetical possibility of replacing RAM or internal SSDs on a machine this high-end designed for professionals always seems a little silly; by the time the internal SSD is wearing out or 128GB of RAM is insufficient, you should probably be buying a new machine. And sure, Apple's gonna charge you an arm and a leg for those resources and make aftermarket upgrades hard or impossible, but they're not in the parts business, they're selling whole integrated systems.
Mac Studio is modular according to Apple? I guess iPhones are also modular, since you can nowadays choose your own charger!
lol, anything except a one single unit is modular according to apple
Just listen to what Apple actually said... they NEVER said the Mac Studio is modular...
Apple said that many want a modular system and display so that they can get the perfect setup for them. Which literally just meant that the Mac and its Display are no longer in one body but two separate devices...
Well the Studio is modular because it's not an AiO like the 27-inch 5k iMac which it is replacing. You can choose your own peripherals, accessories or in other words BYODKM(Bring your own display, keyboard and mouse).
Imagine if 2 M1 ultra stitch together.. that so sick!
Apple has a patent for just such a thing.
You two are a couple of nerds, I love it....keep'r going !! :)
iphone 14 pro max ultra
I can see that iphone 14 ultra coming
I am seeing linus watercooling Mac studio in future, just imagining 😌
What's the point to mounting it in the back if the sd card is in the front 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤯
Modular? They should have made this like a nuc. When the m2 or m3 systems come, let you swap out your existing m1 ultra board, reuse chassis + psu + heatsink.
If you consider this to be the replacement for the iMac Pro then the ‘system’ it is replacing includes the display, and this is more modular than that.
The fancy version of the iPhone/iPad chips are "Bionic" - do we think we'll see an M1 Bionic in the Mac Pro?
When can we game on them!
it is modular. if the ssd fails you can keep the monitor
but is it more powerful than the mk ultra chip? that one has served me flawlessly for years and I really don't feel like upgrading yet.
M1 ultimate for Mac pro?
Missing space grey line on those new products
M1 Ultra, time to grab a beer 🍻
Weight difference is due to copper v aluminium for the heat sink in the ultra
Very confusing that you use 'power' and 'performance' interchangeably... one is consumed, the other is the output of the system unless it is an engine, right?
Interesting that one word can have multiple meanings
is it still better value for money to build a comparable PC in 2022?
I reckon "Godlike" will be the moniker attached to the die they put in the Pro.
Now imagine apple designing the M1 ultra as a single chip and merging them together with another M1 ultra for even faster performance
I think for the Mac Pro chip that comes out fusing M1 Ultra’s together should be called something like the M1 Exclusive or M1 Signature
M1 Extreme for Mac pro would make a lot of sense. lol
Bummed the Imac pro is dead. :(
M1X a visualization of the interconnected chips in the top tier performer. Just a guess.
Well, maybe the next one will be called M1 Extreme, 2 M1 Ultra.
Doubt it.
I think they're done with their naming here.
M
M Pro
M Max
M Ultra
Apple said on the keynote that the M1 Ultra is the last chip of the lineup. And there's no way that the chip in the Mac Pro will be M2 because that would mess up the entire naming scheme.
@@Raja995mh33 It's possible that Mac Pro gets its own name designation for its chipset. Separate from the M2. I'm guessing it's gonna be the 4-Die version of the 2-Die M1 Ultra, but with a modified chip that makes the base different from M1 Max, but they're gonna name it something different. Like M Extreme or MX, or something. Sort of like Intel Xeon, a specific name for the top of the line
I wish they would of put the headphone jack on the front of the mac studio... They used to do it back in the day...... Just makes it easier
I wish it was the m1 pro max ultra
"Modular" here meant relative to iMacs. Basically pair your own computer with external monitor (Studio Display) instead of everything in an all-in-one like the iMac 27". It's basically them trying to justify killing the iMac 27" lineup. But yeah the terminology is misleading at best.

With still no egpu support in sight, what’s gong to matter is graphics performance vs current RTX performance. Opening the same editing, and video processing apps… not really the most pressing business case as m1/m1 pro handles that well already.
Can't wait for the review of mac studio !!!
I always believed they shouldve sold the trashcan mac pro alongside the tower mac pro. Now my dream is finally coming true.
The trash can Mac Pro was a failure do to a flawed design that created overheating issues.
@@redsoxers thx captain obvious
@@dgw4049 Well “genius”, if it was a flawed product why would they sell it alongside its replacement? Logic isn’t your strong suit, is it kid?
@@redsoxers if they had not attempted to replace the tower with the cylinder form factor they would not have had to cram so much heat into such a small form factor. It wouldve been the compact mid range device they now clearly understand they have lacked basically forever. Every other computer company has a mid range desktop. Apple basically builds a Ford Escape (mini) and an Expedition (mac pro) and now they finally have an Explorer (studio). The trash can was an Explorer but they thought it was the Expedition.
What if they just called the Mac Pro chip the MP chip, a whole new breed specifically for the pro user
There will be one more chip for the Mac Pro which will be 2x M1 Ultra.. That could be the M1 Extreme. (Jace 4C-Die)
Wait... Can anyone tell me when did pewdiepie roasted mkbhd's setup?
maybe they'll double that again for the Mac Tower and since they're "borrowing" names maybe theyll call it Quattro
I think they might name M1 Extreme versions that will go into Mac Pro
They said in the presentation
This max Ultra would be the last in the m1 family
But if you see in another perspective isn’t this just M2 ( M1+M1) and i feel they would make M2 like M1 ultra or pro but they will say we have tone it down such a small factor
I want to claim my guess as "M1 Infinity" for the Mac Pro's chip.
