Is there anywhere I can pay to download Scott Henderson -- Jazz Rock Mastery?
"blazing run in the wrong key" is one of my favorite quotes from Scott on his "Outside the Blues Masterclass". He is talking through his choices while playing over a backing track. Barely get time to process his comment before he launches into that quick burst of madness.
I had Jazz Improvisation on VHS and wore it out! Great video, Scott is an excellent teacher. I learnt a lot about phrasing from this video. The way he compares musical phrases to speech made a lot of sense to me.
This dvd put me only the path of 1. Being a more mature minded player but seeded interest and growth in becoming a studio engineer and producing music and for that I thank scott. Also his new album vibe station is AMAZING.
Wow, apparently he approaches the frightening soloing-over-chord-changes beast from its very basic level. One note per bar/chord, even I can do that! Think I am ordering me a copy of this. Thanks Levi. You a great guitar instructor in your own right.

I remember getting the first video on VHS from REH and I remember a favorite lick on that one, which is in A minor and which I can still play to this day in 2021 although I may have dust it off a bit. Lol!
Yeah I got that when it came out. I remember spitting up my drink when he said some like "Play it like Ed has Sex with his girlfriend"! lol

You could watch Scott's video over and over again and learn something new every time. It's one of the best ever.

Jazz guitar rhythm chops- Don Mock is a must. Any video with Joe Pass. Rock Discipline -John P. and Paul Gilbert intense rock one and two. And digital downloads- anything by Tom Quayle. This is all the videos you will ever need:-) And perhaps Killer Guitar by Dave Kilminster for good measure.

Excellent, thorough discussion, thanks! I bought the first SH video back in the days of VHS tapes and loved it, though I must say I found it really daunting at the time. Fortunately it wouldn't go away, and I've gone back to it over the years. Each time I do, I find something else to gnaw on that I wasn't quite ready for before. It's really a treasure trove, and I love how even today, Scott speaks of all this technique, theory, etc. as if it's no big deal. I personally find that attitude helpful, in that it's not someone saying 'This is the hardest thing you'll ever do in your life, and this is how I do it'. His approach is so organic and 'light', and everything he does he seems to look at simply as a tool for expression. IMHO, it doesn't get any better than that. He's a humble guy who plays his axe as though he's madly in love with it, rather than fighting with it, as many blokes seem to do. We don't need to conquer our instruments, which is a very constricting approach; we only need to become intimate with a tool that allows us to express ourselves without us getting in the way.

When a guitar player wants to play like Scott,he needs to think about playing around arpeggios with chromatic approach, this is "just" jazz... Every serious jazz players know very well this part of approach.... The most important thing is "don't thing like a rock guitar player specifically thinking about scales and i particolar diatonic scales and don't think in vertical boxes(mick Goodrick and john mclaughlin knows very well)

I own one too and love it..Looks like I am going to own a Scott Henderson DVD soon..Cheers for the advice, I cant wait for it to arrive. I love Scotts playing and own 5 of his albums and one instructional book. He is an amazing player. He strikes me to be a bit like yourself, as in, he doesn't fuck around and is very serious about his shit..Keep up the good work man. Peace

Either you've talked to someone my age, or you've done research: if you did want to play like Yngwie, Wolf Marshall (there's a name I haven't run across in decades) would have been one of the very few sources. There were maybe three people advertising transcriptions in the back pages of Guitar Player.
I'd like you to have enlarged on derivative vs. parallel modal theories as this distinction is kind of lost on me. My personal lightbulb moment came from watching John Scofield explain the major and melodic minor modes, so I'd tend to treat harmonic major and minor the same way. And then there's Rick Beato, whose level of knowledge and thoroughness is an example to all and an inspiration to most, I think.
And I'm old school. When music was there, I, you know, made an effort? Of course it hurt my head, of course I got things wrong. That's all part of learning.
And the phrasing/speaking thing I picked up from Zappa, who was never afraid to accommodate speech phrasing into his compositions from the beginning, and of course culminating with Steve Vai doubling his improvised vocals on three tunes on The Man From Utopia.
But Hermeto Pascoal, back in the seventies or eighties, did some tracks where he'd take a brief spoken word passage (and Brazilian Portuguese is gorgeous to listen to): you'd hear the plain version, and then you'd hear it again with overdubs that transformed it into an astonishingly lovely piece of music. Percussion would come in at rhythmic moments, handled with superb delicacy and accuracy of phrasing. If anyone knows about this and can link it, that would be so awesome because I've lost the cassette tape I had these gems on.
As for the early days of guitar synths... you might like to take a listen to "Hippityville". John Abercrombie KEPT those glitches, and I suspect it's because it's the best take he got with what was available at the time. Fantastic tune, though, and Em - Cm is a gorgeous change to play over. It was what it was. Scott H. gets off pretty lightly here, believe me.
At the time, I reeeeeeely wanted to play like Holdsworth, so when the SH video came out, I didn't bother, primarily because I'd by that point been exposed to the material he was covering from other sources. I do like his playing, although I'm not super keen on the people who copy him, because, until recently, there already was one of him. Ouch. I used to get Guitar Player every month, eventually swapping to Guitar Techniques. I even tried to do all the exercises every month for a while (GP not GT). So for me this kind of video was a luxury, and I tended to go for individualists like Tuck Andress. Eric Johnson, too. I definitely wanted to see what he was up to. Another valuable purchase was Emily Remler's video on bossa guitar, which started me off with thumb independence and paying attention to bass note choices.
I've seen enough to like the Scott video you're recommending though - plus I'm a lot more forgiving of his sound choices than the new generation, apparently. Wouldn't you like to be able to just hit a chord and hold it while you play over it? Handy for some of your videos, and you can nowadays get that facility in a pretty cheap pedal. Back then... ooooh, flash!
Like a lot what you’re doing! I spent quite some time today watching most of the video on must-own books today. Absolutely useful! Now to Scot. I really really like his stuff, particularly the latest more Blues oriented Stuff. Is there a more perfect minor blues than “Tore house down”??? maybe SRV’s ‘Tin pan alley’. Same league. I purchased the dvd recently and put it away quickly. Will get back to it later. Too intellectual for me at the moment. I like to identify myself as a right (brain) hemisphere musician. I like to breathe and feel music. A left hemisphere musician ‘thinks’ music, like solving an equation. I have difficulties thinking fast enough and I make too many mistakes, so I prefer the gutt approach. Nevertheless, there are loads of interesting ideas Scot develops here. (But man, does his sound suck!!!!). Glad he is using Suhr gear now!!!! ;-)

Cheers man. Would you care to make a video someday about chord books? Your view on that subject and perhaps some good and not so good books...I´ve talked to many guitarists and opinions on chord books are so different. That would be great..
I've not read a good chord book - I learned everything there is to know about chords from meticulously applying music theory to the neck - that resulted in my chord encyclopedia DVDs, and hopefully one day a book

His other one is even better in my opinion. If we're talking about "learning how he approaches things" and not just a bag of tricks, I'd go for "Melodic Phrasing" every time.
This is about the two, and IIRC I’m vocal about how average the first is, but how AMAZING melodic phrasing is
@@LeviClay LOL! I feel so dumb. I did skim the video too see, because - surely - you couldn't recommend the worst of the two. But I missed the part from 6:45, and never even realized it was a box set. So sorry man, and great to see someone recommending this video. For me it had an impact on more than just music, but got me really interested in communication and language as well.

Scott? Well he's got two big things in his playing, the jazz fusion stuff, and the blues. The Dog Party album is all out blues and well worth the time, but if you want some more fusion influence (without losing the blues) go for Well To The Bone... if you want to go all out jazz fusion, give Face First a look as that's pretty accessible, or Nomad if you want my favourite!
