  • "Running Bear" was recorded on March 26, 1969 and released in April 1969.
Here is what Sonny James had to say about "Running Bear":
"Now the song itself “Running Bear” was written by the late Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson and it's a Texas song out of Beaumont and I recorded it and I guess of all the things that I've done on television, personal appearances I end my show most of the time with “Running Bear”. My group is very active while I'm singing it. You know it's perfect for, we have a lighting effect and things to end the show with which makes the show very exciting and it's an easy song to sing. It's relaxing to sing and most of the fans will recall that a number of years ago there was a tragic accident when the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly were all killed. Three very very fine artists. And all of them, there's no telling what they would have accomplished even thought they were all just giants in the buisness but he gave some good songs. He was an excellent writer, J.P. Richardson and certainly I owe his penmanship. I owe him a lot of thanks."

I still remember hearing this on Mom's record player as a little girl - early 1960's. I have always loved many of Sonny's recordings & I'm now over 60!

When I was a kid and this song would come on the radio, I'd question my mom about how Running Bear could love Little White Dove if they never had a conversation. I'd ask her if there was a way he could've gone around the river. lol

Very pretty Indian maiden flowing hair
The Chief her father named Running Bear
Braves run away bare that father did scare
One brave stood his ground with a stare
And Running Bear Declared them a pair

You might have heard the song Running Bear, NOT by Sonny James! The Southern Gentlemen joined Sonny on August 15, 1964. Sonny's recording of "Running Bear" was with the Southern Gentlemen. Sonny's first #1 single started with "Need You" which was recorded on June 25, 1965 and reached #1 on April 22, 1967. In 1961 Sonny James was recording for RCA Victor which included song like Apache, Innocent Angel, The Day's Not Over Yet and only recorded ONE album. "Running Bear" was his 7th consecutive #1 song. I would recommend the biography of Sonny James "Wilful Shadows" by Gary Robble (a Southern Gentleman) for more details.

Johnny Preston had a big hit with it in 1959. His version sold more copies than anyone else's. It might even have hit #1 on the pop charts - I'm not sure. Here he is lip-sync'ing it on the Dick Clark TV show in 1959: ruclips.net/video/1PfrpcqLyzY/видео.html
