My previous work phone was an iphone and that was so incredibly annoying compared to my Android. Especially because I am bilingual and I refuse to switch keyboards all the time because that's fucking stupid. I want to learn to type on one touch keyboard, not two slightly different ones.
FaceTime voice(video?)mail is such a wonderful feature to finally have. Anyone with loved ones across the country or world knows how special it is to see and hear those people and have it saved. Sure, people can already record a video and message/email- but this feature will feel like a continuation of the old “please leave a message after the beep” that the grandparents/less tech-savvy people will actually use. Granted, I know half of the video messages will be a few seconds of grandpa and grandma waving their fingers around looking for the button to hang up… and I’ll love those too.
Oddly I find Google Assistant responds quicker when I use pleasantries like please and thank you. Kind of makes sense since it also checks if you say things rudely like, "turn on my TV, idiot," as it will respond telling you to not be rude, so I guess if you say please it just ends computing? Idk why but it's notable and interesting
Additional point on Personal Voice: it's also great for people like me with autism who may be nonverbal at times and need a way to communicate verbally without awkwardly writing things down or what have you. It's honestly very well thought out and I'm glad Apple added it.
I am sorry but I don't understand..don't you need to talk to the phone to unlock that feature and you still do need to type the things you want to say. So how does it help an autistic person? I just need to understand.

As a person with a stutter, I don't think personal voice was meant for me, but I can see it being super useful for me. There are days where it is really hard for me to communicate. Personal voice would let me order food and get help when I have days where I am having lots of difficulties.

The accessibility features are really nice in this update. As someone with a family member who had a stroke and finds it tough to speak, the fact that over time he could get through those sentences and then use it whenever he’s too tired to try speaking is much more personal than the current solution of texting.
You mention this, and my mom had a stroke herself almost a decade ago. If I told her about this, taught her how to use it, etc etc, she'd probably be an Android-to-iPhone convert (unless Google has or already Had something available already, Besides random app store downloads).

Wow, it's incredible to see how technology has come full circle! As the CMO of the original company "Bump" that was acquired by Google in 2009, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia watching Marques Brownlee discuss iOS 17 and its new "bump" feature for automatic file transfer. Witnessing the evolution of such innovative ideas from the past into the present is truly remarkable. Kudos to the tech world for continually pushing boundaries and making our lives easier with these advancements. Excited to see what the future holds! Keep up the great work, Marques!
I remember my first phone ever for Christmas 2006 which was an LG VX5400 flip phone. I had two basic phones afterwards from an LG Venus to a Pantech Hotshot and then I wound up getting Straight Talk (ironically they’re now owned by Verizon) in September 2014 and when I did my first iPhone was a 4 that my dad used and I’ve had iPhones ever since. There’s been the 5S, 6, and I’ve had my 8 Plus since July 2020 with plans on getting a 14.
Same reason they removed the jack. Because they are going backwards. From quick and easy to more annoying steps. I didn’t want to go to virus gobbling Android, but apple left me no choice. I require tight ear lobe fitting buds, which don’t exist unless wired, not that I’d plug radiation into my head if wireless did fit snugly. Now I’m expected to type my code in 20 times a day versus a single touch?? No, I’m not a dumb slave who hands over facial recognition.
I think the whole voicemail thing is super cool actually. Like you said, it is like the answering machine back in the 90' / early 2000 but I think it's going to be a cool feature and the video message sounds good too. Can't wait to try these out.
One feature that I've always wanted to be updated is the Optimized battery charging. What I mean by updated is I want to be able to choose when it turns on because I have a weird sleep schedule and am not always charging my phone at the same time.
I really wish there was a setting in that section which could let us choose what percentage we want our phones to be charged to. Like if I pick 80%, it just stays there without giving the phone more juice (unless it dips below 80%).
I used the Shortcuts app to turn on/off battery saver based on my sleep Focus. It’s not what you are asking for but it helps the phone not drain unnecessary battery while I’m sleeping.
Standby mode (8:03) reminded me of Blackberry's 'bedside mode', where the clock would display (although the clock looked a lot slicker (red in colour)). Good to see some of these old features popping back into modern hardware.
One UNDERRATED feature is the new crop tool. If you zoom in on a photo it will immediately give you an option up top to crop it in that way instantly. That’s a USEFUL feature
@@roboticvenom1935 Yes. very minor. but I bet people crop their photos and videos more than they will send someone their number in that manner. That's why Android doesn't sell as well. They focus on "Major" stuff instead of useful features
The phone bump feature was already available years ago in Google Nexus. But almost nobody I knew had a Nexus back then. But it was a charm to use when somebody had one. I wonder why Apple didn’t bring that much sooner but I am happy to finally use this extremely helpful feature better late than never again missed it so much over the years
Not sure if it was a different feature as I never had a Nexus, but Android Beam was available in a handful of other handhelds. Thought it was a pretty neat feature even if it was rarely used (and admittedly a little finicky). Maybe this release from Apple will prompt Google to bring the feature back again, who knows.
Yeah I felt like this was a thing a long time ago. Vaguely remember it. Glad to see iPhone is stepping up the game lol. I switched to the dark side from android two days ago. First iPhone ever, still getting used to it.
Standby is actually very useful for cars without car play. I use it in my old Audi TT to switch tracks on Spotify. As the display is essentially always on and the buttons are massive it’s very easy to quickly tap and switch tracks. It’s great
As someone who just joined that Apple eco system with an Iphone 14 pro and got my apple watch series 7 yesterday. I am still getting used to it (its overwhelming) but finding those new improvements and features. Those throwback featues make me happy :) Great to see the direction they are going. Facetime Voicemail is something I've been saying IOS needs forever. It just makes sense that when you're Facetiiming someone and they don't pick up, you can leave a video message right there. Probably my favorite update
Not much of an Apple fan but I love the idea of personalized contacts (hoping Google implements similar especially that screaming to a MaterialYou or similar branding) and recorded messages.
Video message is a bit too much but personalized contact is actually a great feature. The issue is that most smartphone brands use different apps for contacts. So they either have to work together to add this feature in all of them and decide on a common format for the personalized contact that can actually be modified into the style of each different contact app. Or Google could use it as a way to force their own contact app on all Android devices by not allowing other contact apps to use this feature.
@@newbie4789 well it's really only Samsung that is using it's own app. Any other major Company (Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, Oneplus) does as far as I know use the Google one. Also Google and Samsung are good friends (look at what the messages app on Samsung is, just the Google Version with OneUI on top), which means that if Google wants to add it, it would be done easily.
As a blind voice over user, I think the personal voice profile is really cool. You could even get the voice of a loved one. I would hope they would have support for remotely saving the data so you could keep it with you let's say a loved one passed away. I think it would also be a great idea if those voice profiles could be used as a voice over voice. If you're a troll like me, record your own voice and then have your phone in your voice speak to you all day as you're just going through your emails, or scrolling on youtube, or have the voice of a significan't other read your amazon shopping list to you and let you know in their voice from a text message that says, Why did I find 11 spoons in the couch"? I could also imagine potentially downloading other voice profiles from the internet or ones compiled by A.I. though it's in a controvertial stage right now. Cool stuff my dude
dude, that’s a super cool idea! imagine being able to share your personal voice alongside the profile card and other people can be read your messages in your voice! that would amazing, especially if it’s the voice of a significant other
It's honestly why my mom holds on to old wireless [landline] phones: it has old voicemails from passed-on loved ones that she doesn't want to ever forget. This is definitely - potentially, in the right hands - a very useful idea of a use case...if I used the right word.

the 'answering machine' feature is actually pretty cool, i remember that it used to be a dramatic thing in movies for characters to hear a voicemail and sometimes pick up to reconcile with their failed love, maybe they'll use this iOS feature in a movie as a replacement lol
Yep. Just like Apple to slap their logo on an already used Android feature and pretend like it's something so innovative. Even though I'm deep into their ecosystem, it is not lost on me how behind they often are when it comes to rolling out tech on their phones/laptops/watches.

After years of updates, for all my bilingual or trilingual friends, Siri language recognition would be something big. Especially for Text messaging writing and reading and music track selection. When i’m in my Car, people text me in English and French. Trying to guess what they said in French with Siri reading texts in English is the worst! And I want to keep my eyes on the road!
Lol, you act like you can't just not look at or use the phone? Turn it off while you're driving, then? Nothing is that important that you need to read or hear texts while you're driving.. "I want to keep my eyes on the road!" LMAO.. so do it and stop using your phone? Jesus..
Omg this would be an outstanding update, I hate it when my family texts me in Spanish and siri is out here reading Spanish in English like a 3rd grade Spanish teacher who doesn’t know Spanish
@JohnSmith-el4ez android doesn't. It's just no one turned on the old feature for sharing files via wifi/Bluetooth but nfc was always on for people. So it was easier to introduce the bump thing than to tell everyone to turn on and setup wifi-direct (which some OEMs wouldn't support and some carriers disabled)
To be fair he meant that as not needing to bump your phone with everyone else's, as in a group. This is great for quickly sending stuff to one person, but for multiple people the traditional way is still way better
I'm in my 60's. Back when we had "Answering Machines", we'd call it "screening our calls" when waiting to hear what the person wanted when they were leaving a msg on the machine. Now you can do the same thing with iPhone. Pretty cool!
So, just a heads up editors or Marques, the blur filter put in for the personal email is removed a couple frames early and you can see it on the name drop segment at 2:01
Name drop functionality seems like a starting point to something I’d love to see in future smart phones. Your phone number doesn’t only give someone access to calling you but this profile page or data that you want the caller to see, like social accounts, recent tweets or threads, possible instagram post, a photo of something..etc. Almost like a one page website.. especially if you have your smart phone in a mode that is silent or non-work mode..
But sadly now it’s gonna make calling androids less fun. And knowing iOS users, some of them will probably refuse to pick up the phone if there isn’t a contact poster 😢

I remember on the ads for the galaxy s3 like 10 years ago, they had the feature where you could share things by bumping phones together. The example they chose was sharing a playlist of all things, so literally no one used it or cared. #5 seems like exactly the same thing but on a smoother, more advanced level, or at least demonstrating more useful ways to use it. Samsung’s biggest issue has always been explaining how their feature is actually useful.
Airdrop uses NFC to find the phone but then sends the file over wifi, which is much faster. Beam used NFC directly to send it so a single picture could take several minutes and often would crash mid way
@@raulmartinezorteganah I remember sharing pictures with my wife on the S4 and it happened instantly. AirDrop sucks when you’re out in public and there’s no WiFi available
I understand the fear of it, but this technology can be very useful for people with degenerative paralysis diseases, like MS or MG. My father is in the early stages of MG and is starting to lose his vocal functions, so this is a feature we are looking to use once it is available so he can still have the ability to "talk" to others with his own voice if his condition progresses to the point of total voice loss.
Personal voice is so helpful! I was worried about it being stored on a cloud but locally stored voice is so nice. I sometimes go non verbal and this could be really helpful or even for someone you don’t see often to set their voice on your phone so you can hear them speak whenever you want. It’s so nice :)

As of today (July 18) the audio is all of the sudden in Spanish instead of English. It didn't used to be that way, and it isn't that way for other MKBHD videos. I just re-checked and now it is back to English…
Bro, my RUclips is glitched and Marques has a Spanish voiceover. I assumed it was him trying to show a new feature. I kept waiting for him to say something in English but he didn’t. This video is glitched it’s the only one doing this for me. 😂
I wish apple would add some more audio features. Like possibly an audio mixer so you could control multiple audio sources on your phone. Like say FaceTime and RUclips. It would just be perfect.
I think for sure WWDC 24 is gonna be the Siri Update. AI has taken off so much they know they are being torched. I’m sure it has been worked quite a bit in recent years and they’ve got some good stuff in the labs already, but now they will likely accelerate things even more given the state of the market.
I … wouldn’t be so sure. At least voice assistants just … don’t pay. Many have tried but nobody managed to successfully minutiae them yet … so interest in making them smarter is rather limited. If there’s gonna be an update I doubt it’ll be for free but I’ll be gladly proven wrong xD
at this point it's affecting their other product lines though. especially with homepod/homekit increasing in popularity, alongside vision pro release 2024.. wouldn't be surprised if they invest here.
Litterly the best intro music everr for a tech channel, tech related video!! You’re a genius marques it’s the little things that make ur content special for me
Just some other cool stuff I've noticed in the beta: -OFFLINE MAPS! To be honest, this should've made the video -There's a level in the Camera app that shows up automatically when you aim toward the horizon -The screen-wasting app bubbles in Messages are hidden behind a clean '+' icon. I had to hide those constantly -You can use a slider to adjust the boldness of "Lock screen text." It's beautifully done, haven't seen a slider to adjust typography before... imagine if this level of control existed for system text as an accessibility option?
And also looks like what the UI of the rumored HomePod with screen would be. I believe that’s why they made it mostly and thought of adding it to iOS too
am only I getting a spanish voice-over on this video and cant change it back? Running Firefox on Desktop, Win11. There is no option to change audio language in the settings and all other videos are in the language they should be.
My biggest question with the contact card update is whether or not there will be an option for a user to keep/make their own version of a contact card for any given person. For example: in iOS 16 if I have a funny picture of a friend on their contact and they share their new photo with me, I have the *option* to update their contact photo. With this new contact card update, Marques made it sound like whatever my friend sets photo to is what I will see on my phone. If there’s no opt-in, I will be kinda bummed.
Marques - as others have mentioned, the quality of your reviews is superb. You do your research before tapping "Record", and you always cut straight to the heart of what's important in a new product. Nicely done.

Instantly thought of bump when that feature was revealed 😊
Shame Google had this tech for ages and didn't do anything with it. Now they will that apple did though.

One feature that I've always wanted to be updated is the Optimized battery charging. What I mean by updated is I want to be able to choose when it turns on because I have a weird sleep schedule and am not always charging my phone at the same time.

@@mrkew48 That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking

@@roboticvenom1935 Yes. very minor. but I bet people crop their photos and videos more than they will send someone their number in that manner. That's why Android doesn't sell as well. They focus on "Major" stuff instead of useful features

Not much of an Apple fan but I love the idea of personalized contacts (hoping Google implements similar especially that screaming to a MaterialYou or similar branding) and recorded messages.
Google Meet does have the recorded video messages if that's what you mean
Video message is a bit too much but personalized contact is actually a great feature. The issue is that most smartphone brands use different apps for contacts. So they either have to work together to add this feature in all of them and decide on a common format for the personalized contact that can actually be modified into the style of each different contact app.
Or Google could use it as a way to force their own contact app on all Android devices by not allowing other contact apps to use this feature.
Think they can implement basic contact card sharing as a standard feature on Android. Maybe even an advanced feature version for pixel.

You still don't have to do that for airdrop. Nothing changed

Services like Carrd and Linktree are going to be sweating buckets if NameDrop becomes ubiquitous across devices.
But sadly now it’s gonna make calling androids less fun. And knowing iOS users, some of them will probably refuse to pick up the phone if there isn’t a contact poster 😢

Just some other cool stuff I've noticed in the beta:
-OFFLINE MAPS! To be honest, this should've made the video
-There's a level in the Camera app that shows up automatically when you aim toward the horizon
-The screen-wasting app bubbles in Messages are hidden behind a clean '+' icon. I had to hide those constantly
-You can use a slider to adjust the boldness of "Lock screen text." It's beautifully done, haven't seen a slider to adjust typography before... imagine if this level of control existed for system text as an accessibility option?
And the new text tones
I'm an S23 Ultra user, and it will stay that way, but i gotta say, the standyby feature as a smart interface seems really cool and usefull.
bros a android user 😥
And also looks like what the UI of the rumored HomePod with screen would be. I believe that’s why they made it mostly and thought of adding it to iOS too

The NFC share feature is similar to discontinued Android Beam (introduced in 2011, now called Nearby Share).
Such a great video. A little bit emotional when u said ‘’ I’m old now‘’. Wish u all the best and always healthy! 11:07
am only I getting a spanish voice-over on this video and cant change it back? Running Firefox on Desktop, Win11. There is no option to change audio language in the settings and all other videos are in the language they should be.
My biggest question with the contact card update is whether or not there will be an option for a user to keep/make their own version of a contact card for any given person. For example: in iOS 16 if I have a funny picture of a friend on their contact and they share their new photo with me, I have the *option* to update their contact photo. With this new contact card update, Marques made it sound like whatever my friend sets photo to is what I will see on my phone. If there’s no opt-in, I will be kinda bummed.
Don’t worry you get to choose the one you want to display
Yes. Whenever they update their picture or name It asks if you want to update it or keep the one you set.
You can choose
Marques - as others have mentioned, the quality of your reviews is superb. You do your research before tapping "Record", and you always cut straight to the heart of what's important in a new product. Nicely done.
"omg! a black can do things just as well as us white people 😱"
You’re my favourite on RUclips. Best videos 🙌 ❤
Bump used to be a thing a long time ago on Android phones before. Around the HTC One or the LG Evo. You could if you both had the app share stuff by bumping the phones together.
Way back on the iPhone 3g there was a 3rd party app literally called bump that did this
Does standby mode do anything to prevent screen burn-in? Like move the widgets around etc?
no
This is the best iOS update since Dark Mode, it's all so good hopefully they keep these types of updates coming.
Your voice is seriously so relaxing 🥰
Love the fact that this video begins with the notes about how Android already has most of these features and then casually shows Android throughout the video. Well done, as always.
i just spent the last 10 minutes trying to fix my youtube only to realize its not me. what the heck
11:19 The facetime video message thing was available on the OG Google Duo. I used to love the Duo app and used it most of the time. Don't know why Google killed it
Thank you!
Siri: You’re Welcome 😄
