    Fantastic discovey. Explains a lot about why these clone FTB brakes don't perform properly. PS, I made the mistake of opening up my Aldebaran's brakes and having to reinstall the springs. Not easy is an understatement.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  2 года назад

      Not easy at all! I do think this issue is isolated to newer production dark wolf ultra sun an attempt to fix the “weak” braking performance many people were experiencing with earlier batches. That being said, implementing a “quick” fix that disables the dynamic nature of the fake ftb is quite disappointing…

      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  Год назад +1

      Haha yep you’re right. These early videos I made are pretty cringey to me 😅😅😅. Turns out though that the LH DWU don’t work even if you revert them to a dynamic state. The OEM failed to mirror the fake FTB system properly and so the brake shoes actually move inwards away from the spool as the spool accelerates. So… for LH reel owners this modification is moot sadly… Paul over at Fishing Discoveries made a really great video explaining why this is the case. Cheers my friend!

    • @yep.fishing
      @yep.fishing Год назад +1

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL yea I was curious if this was a LHW issue like the BK2 has. I'm having a few minor issues with my BK2. Braid gets caught in brake hub with no spool free play. Also U think mine is static brakes and wonder if the magnet upgrade will help even the RHW brakes

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  Год назад +1

      @@yep.fishing afaik the bk2 is a DWU clone and so it also suffers from the LH models not having their ftb brakes mirrored correctly… as far as whether your model is static vs dynamic, try looking at your brake shoes. If you can see a spring in that small channel or if the shoe can move in and outwards then it’s dynamic. If you bought your bk2 relatively recently then chances are it’s a static version. Static versions don’t need more magnets as they increased the magnet strength. The dynamic ones do because their magnets are a bit weaker. Finally, I haven’t heard of many folks having issues with line getting between their spool. What kind of line are you using and how much are you spooling? If you go too thin this could be the issue but also if you have too much line that could also be an issue. I prefer to stay around 0.6goh or 0.128mm diameter braid and I typically only spool up to 50m of line. Iirc I’ve only had one time when I got line stuck between the spool and frame. Hope that helps and cheers!

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL hwy I'm using 6lb J Braid which is apparently .06mm and it's fully spooled. Btw Andrew Knots 4k had a video on this same issue with his DWU. He just went up to .14mm

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  Год назад +1

      @@yep.fishing yes what you’re using is close to 0.1 or 0.2 goh which is very thin. By sizing up you should be good and not run into this issue. Hope that helps! Cheers!

    The way the sideplate is set on the table, the spool is spinning counter clockwise when making a cast. So the hinge on the brake mechanism is on the wrong side, the brake mechanism is backwards. The hinge should be on the left side and the spring on the right. On shimano ftb reels it’s like that, the hinge is on the front side and the rear side is the side that is spring loaded and rises up. Chinese engineering, copied but made as mirrored

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  2 года назад

      Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. You are very correct in that the manufacturer did not copy the system correctly. That being said, I’m not sure how much of a difference that that would actually make. The idea is still the same in that the shoes will move outwards as the spool speed picks up. Unfortunately, I don’t have a means to actually test this as well. What do you think?

    • @jiihoo5588
      @jiihoo5588 2 года назад +1

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL hard to imagine that it works dynamically since it tilts opposite to what the spool rotates. Shimano engineered it tilting to the same direction as the spool spins for a reason i guess

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  2 года назад

      @@jiihoo5588 if the system didn’t work then the spool wouldn’t slow but I can assure you that it does. Whether it’s less efficient than the “correct” direction is something I can’t verify. The only way would be to get a LH and RH version of the DWU that has the dynamic brakes and test cast both. Unfortunately, I only have my LH model. I do have a different clone of the DWU that has a traditional static brake system that I hope to test my DWU against.

    This does not work on the left hand models. It will actually make your brakes weaker. The brake shoes are physically the same on both right and left handed models, which, is actually a problem and why they revised the brakes to begin with. The real Shimano FTB systems brakes are mirrored on the left hand version so that the brake shoe pivot points will be in the proper direction to force the magnets closer as the spool spins faster. Since the spool is essentially rotating in the opposite direction on the left hand models from the view point of the brakes at least, this means the Dark Wolf left hand models with the right hand braking system are always static. And since the stop pin was cut in this case the brakes are now slightly further away from the spool resulting in weaker brakes.
    Fishing Discoveries has a really good video on this.

      Hey Kevin! Thank you for sharing! I actually was mentioned in Paul’s video and am very good friends with him. I believe in a few of the later videos I made on this that I explain that this does not on LH models and actually reference and link to Paul’s video 🙌🙌🙌. Nevertheless, you can still make the RH versions back into dynamic brakes but I also found that the LH model I reverted worked fine as well. So… I’m not sure how big of an impact the style of braking system has in this case. Anywho, I really appreciate you taking the to share! Thanks so much and cheers!

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL Oh ok nice! I really wish Tsurinoya was able to make a proper mirrored system for the left hand models. I’d gladly pay a tad more for one if they did. Я добавил на каждую колодку Dark Wolf Ultra по 2 магнита 0,5 мм и переставил пружины с Fishband Brilliance GH100 на Dark Wolf Ultra, потому что у первого пружины слабее чем на Dark Wolf Ultra. После этих переделок забросы минимальных весов с каушкой Dark Wolf Ultra стали очень комфортны.
    I added 2 0.5 mm magnets to each Dark Wolf Ultra pad and switched the springs from Fishband Brilliance GH100 to Dark Wolf Ultra, because the former has weaker springs than Dark Wolf Ultra. After these alterations, casting of minimal weights with the Dark Wolf Ultra coil became very comfortable.

      @@staryi5119 that’s great! I recently found that it seems that LH DWU that have dynamic brakes may actually not be working as intended. Good morning :) I have done the bearing upgrades, but with low lure weights 1-3gr I have a lot of trouble while throwing. Because I h ave one of the static LH ones I am unsure of what to do. I would have tried to make the update using the springs, but if it worsens the brake it will mess it up even more.. Do you have any recommendations? Should i simply replace the magnets but not install springs?

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  20 дней назад +1

      @@gamefixxer5974 hey game! Hm… if you’re having that many issues I wonder if you have tried adding spool tension to your casts? See if that helps smooth out your casts. Additionally, you can consider adding some magnets(if possible) to your existing ones. Look for 4mm(diameter) x 0.5mm(thickness) N52 magnets. You may or may not be able to get some out on top of your existing ones as the space between the existing magnets and your spool might not be the best. In my experience, I was able to get a few added without having them scrape the inside of the spool but it was random as the overall height of the preexisting magnets is not exactly equal. I would suggest not doing the spring modification as it is not easy and I don’t think it will really help much in this case. Try spool tension and also consider the 4x0.5mm magnets. Hope that helps! Cheers my friend!

      Hi there! I have not tried a homemade spring yet as I have no experience with this. It does sound like a good alternative to purchasing a spring. Do you have any information, that you can share, on wire gauge? Thanks again!

    • @qtn9279
      @qtn9279 2 года назад +1

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL Since it is a very small spring, you have to find a stainless steel wire of less than 30/100 diameter ("piano" wire that you can find at any good fishing store) and a shaft /mandrel of less than 1mm diameter (could be a drill bit or a needle). Block the wire with the shaft inside the drill chuck, and press the button on the drill to slowly bend/turn the wire around the shaft. You can even only use pliers to turn the wire around the shaft by hand since it is very small. You just need a few coils on the spring.

    it would appear to me that cutting the bottom peg moves the brakes farther out and although creates dynamic, it will not go to the max brake that it was on before as it doesnt appear it can travel the full distance to the top peg with the spring on it. so you have reduced the brakes by my view.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  2 года назад

      Hi! Thanks so much for your comment! Actually, the top peg can still allow the brake shoe to fully extend even with the spring. The spring, when compressed, is the same height the top peg is. The spring needs the top peg to act as a seat/guide to keep it in place inside of the channel. If you were to cut the top peg the brake shoes would extend further and make contact with the inside of the spool. I hope that explanation makes sense! Thanks again for watching!
