Yup that’s why they’re the good ol Grateful Dead
You said it all right there!
“ I can hear every instrument”
I’ve really only found that also with Iron Maiden !
Now I’ve listen to both my entire life only difference is I’ve been to 14 Grateful Dead shows up to 92. A couple the dead shows after. One. Iron Maiden show in 83 so there’s that and of course I don’t listen to much of IM records after the 4th or 5th I can’t remember they have great live shows too. But they’re big two in 80’s are just as instrumental just different.
Anyway point is these two are the same in respect to your statement. I love them both. But I only learn music musical history and lineage of so many different types of songs and genre from one of them take a guess lol. Ol Jerry really turned me on two more music and artists than I can remember.

@@johnconroy8323 Nice, Maiden was one of my favorite bands a lifetime ago. I saw the Powerslave tour at Irvine in 1987. To this day one of my top 5 shows. I saw the Dead over 60 times. Over 500 concerts all together. I will have to see if I still have any of my Maiden CDs around and give them a listen. Hallowed be thy name.

    • @kevinr.3542

Its actually still pretty vague, with no real obvious references to Altamont. Other than the timing of its release and the fact they told people it was a reaction to it.
I know it says the line "in the heat of the night a man died in cold" but even that is fairly standard for Grateful Dead lyrics. Death, Gambling, Roses

Was right there with ya Bruce. Usually 20' FOB center. Started in 70 off for a bit, I jumped back on the bus in '84 after a few year haitus and caught 90% of B.A. and Sacto shows. Up close, witnessed it all, the rise in popularity, building of Shorline, the coma (voided 102 BB seats@ cancelled shorlines!), the recoup, the loss, the first P&F show at BCT and the last Shorlines...so many roads. One way or another, we knew it wouldn't last forever.

but sometimes we just didn't want to think about that end. Even my vision during a show on summer 95 I pushed out of mind best I could. I did not think it was Jerry that was leaving as he always seemed to survive and had just had half of 92 off and returned in 93 looking better. by 95 I hardly watched the stage or monitors anymore and stayed back or moved around so totally didn't see the slow decline...could hear it on tapes but every show sounded great at the time.

An iconic blues classic, where Jerry's vocals infused into my body and mind's musical receptors, I could feel his soul and emotions on my very first listen to the Workingman's Dead studio version as an 11 yr old. It took 49 years before I learned the song was written about the Altamont Festival. 60 years old now, and I'm still getting surprised and amazed with little nuggets of treasured information and hearing new things in the music; like getting surprised with special gifts on Christmas morning! Ah, the dead - never cease to amaze me, and I just know the gifts will keep on coming and never stop!

It probably reminded them of Altamont, riots, and the gate crashing the occurred on their 1970 train tour.seen in Festival Exprees. the song is about the darkness and trouble present during the last gasps of the 60s hippy movement. They were dark days, people were anxious to move on and leave the darkness behind. I think this song was so wrapped up in the implications of the era, they decided to shelf it or just had no urge to revisit it.

      @kevinr.3542 5 лет назад +2

I saw the tour he & the Range opened for the Dead. Brent passed & Bruce stepped up nicely. The Buckeye Lake show, with Violent Femmes opening, Bruce & Vince both played. Bruce's tinkling ivories really fit the Dead's old timey-esque sound on so many songs. I hated seeing Keith go, & being replaced by Brent. But Brent Mydland's sound belonged. Saw Brent's last show @Tinley Park, hated seeing him depart as well. But Bruce really put his heart & soul into his time with the band. Lot of transitions with the band since PigPen passed... but each emanation has been special & unique, & a blessing to so many whose lives were touched by the music.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one behind the reintroduction of this song. He was always pushing them to try new things, he was like a fan himself.
For example I heard him in an interview say he was always pushing for a first set Dark Star..He wanted to see them get weird right away, in the first set! Start the jams EARLY! But they were always like "we cant do THAT, that's a second set tune!" They had their formula for how the show should flow. But Bruce was always up for something new and interesting. He pushed some of those jams to new heights.

I got to see Bruce in the late 90's in a little theater in my home town and the Man was talking requests from the audience it was great. Someone even wrote out the lyrics to Tangled up in blue. Good Times.

If I'm Vince Welnick and I suddenly find myself playing in the Grateful Dead because I can sing high harmonies, I would be holding back in my playing a lot more.

Truly love this song, all versions, this Jerry version, the latest Dead & Co. with Bob singing, I found a 1970 version with Pigpen on harp but the video is awful. 1970... go figure ha. Thanks for sharing it!

Having trouble remembering a certain venue, hoping someone out there can help me. It was a show I'm thinking Maine, or N.H, around late eighties, at an old race track? It was so long ago, great show, did a great West L.A. Fade away. Some old raceway? Ah! It's right there!

Theres alot of, dare I say, substitutes playing alot of good GD these days. Of course not The Real thing, but still have The ability to mąkę most any fan smile, smile, smile!

@@baileyfurio2327 True. All true. At least we have all this GD media at our disposal these daze. I wish Jerry was still here and that 'The Real' you mentioned never took a bad trip but that's life. I really dig that openish style of all things GD has become. The material is EVERYWHERE now. Some people may disagree though.
