inhuman perfection. there is not a single mistake or off moment, in not the tiniest detail. which is something most singers struggle to achieve in much easier songs.
but natalie dessay achieves this in the most murderous coluratura piece possible.
and to me this performance here is the absolute best of this song ever recorded. the voice is ideal, the technique is rock solid, the skill immense. and i am always pleased to hear a true and proper trill. which is kind of rare nowadays.
this cannot be sung better than she does here. incredible.

Meredith Anne this aria is why "Lakme" is hardly ever performed. In the opera is comes at the end of the 2nd act. As a recital piece it's easier to pull off. However, Dessay in her prime pulled the role off with ease.

Even though I enjoy Dessay and find this rendition incredibly appropriate and emotive, I also love Callas, Sutherland and Lily Pons (the most agile of all imo).
The dark voice Callas had somehow adds a different layer to this aria, which is always associated with a lighter, brighter, "silvery" voice. Even with all the weigh, darkness and "viscosity" of her timbre she manages to do all the passages with extreme agility and grace. She lightens her voice incredibly easy too when she wants. She had crazy control.
I don't think we should choose just one favorite rendition, but explore all the possible nuances and find the miracles (and the eventual tragedies! Lol).

    Et ne se souvient pas
    Que partout on repousse
    L'enfant des parias.
    Elle court sur la mousse,
    L'enfant des parias ;
    Le long des lauriers roses,
    Rêvant de douces choses,
    Ah !
    Elle passe sans bruit
Et riant à la nuit à la nuit !
    Ah !
    Ah ! ah ! ah !
    L'étranger la regarde,
    Elle reste éblouie,
Il est plus beau que les Rajahs !
Il rougira s'il sait qu'il doit la vie
    À la fille des parias.
Mais lui, l'endormant dans un rêve,
Jusque dans le ciel il l'enlève,
En lui disant : « Ta place est là ! ...»
C'était Vishnou, fils de Brahma !
Depuis ce jour au fond des bois,
    Le voyageur entend parfois
Le bruit léger de la baguette
    Où tinte la clochette,
    Où tinte la clochette
    Des charmeurs.
    (Imitant la clochette)

If it isn't sung this well (which one soprano in a million can do,) it would be painful rather than gorgeous. I think I wouldn't want to hear it unless Dessay were Lakmé -- and alas, she is not singing this rep anymore. :( (okay, slight exaggeration. I know there are good coloratura sopranos out there -- but none quite like Natalie at her best!)
