    • @kapytanhook
      @kapytanhook 3 года назад +20

      Yeah, but its hard to tie DNA to a crime. Your car probably has DNA of a bunch of people in it. It takes a lot of time and effort to do right and only tends to be used in murder cases and such. These criminals seem like slippery types and all let stuff cool down the same way. Unless they get caught red-handed they are unlikely to be caught

      @@kapytanhook I feel like this is exactly the reason to gather evidence. And no I wouldn't suggest getting a lab team out to every dodgy van found. But it's the future.. You can scan prints as well in the field as you could in the lab 20 years ago.. Straight into a digital database in the cloud.. And swabs are cheap. We could equip officers with some rudimentary evidence gathering tools. So that on the day Crims A and B get unlucky, they end up getting tagged to a bunch of stolen recoveries... Not just whatever petty offence they did to get noticed. Anyway, I know I'm kidding myself.. But they say if you stop dreaming you die.

    Love these videos! Listening to that RF bleep made me think of our old CB treasure hunts back on old AM CB before FM came in.
    We'd hunt for the beacon using a loop antenna which give you a direction to the beacon pointing away from the flat sides of the loop. So two locations would give you a cross on the map. Ideally you'd use three readings that gives you a small, triangular location for the beacon.
    This is where the phrase "Knocked into a cocked hat." comes from. That little triangle being the cocked hat.
    Buy you could use an RF direction finding loop on the roof. It'd speed up your finds i think.

      Most of that the cops would have done anyway, if not at the scene then after it was recovered and no one likes being told how to do their job so if you want to stay on the right side of them better to be a bit more diplomatic. So re. the VIN say something like "Oh look, they've hidden the VIN number! Typical!" rather than giving them a blunt lesson on cross-checking VIN's with number plates. And these may have been cops early in their career, knowledge comes with experience.

      Also consider getting a kill switch put in. Its fairly cheap and means they have to tow it if they can't start it. they may just move on to another target instead.
