Best news I've heard in a long time! Faviora user for over 6 years without an issue and have been holding out buying MTB Garmin pedals in hope of this. Thanks Ray for the awesome review.
Me too I couldn’t even wait for Garmin. I started with Xpower SRM 1st generation and always trouble with discharging battery when not in use, then added Garmin XC (converted from Vector 3) with over 200€ just for the pedal bodies but in total cheaper than Rallye. It’s a pity it took so long for Assioma
Thanks Ray! Happy Assioma Duo user since 2018. I even mounted those (Duo) on my MTB for a race held mostly on forest roads. Still work (and look) like day one. The only problem was loosing the charging cables, but I had plenty of micro USB cables at home so I just ordered the overpriced connector... MX out of stock for 2 months!!!
Bought this pedal after watching your review. I've been using this MTB Power Pedal for over one month. During my 1,200 km riding, this power pedal performs well.
For MTB pedals, the engineering around maximizing bearing life and the serviceability of the bearings is quite important. I'd love to see this in the comparison video you're thinking of doing. For example Eggbeater pedals suffer from a very short lifespan when compared to Shimano pedals and so I wonder what this looks like for power meter MTB pedals... As always a big thumbs up and thanks to you and your family for all of the work you put into these reviews!
Check out PeakTorque, he just put out a video on them. He's done some analysis on this and has been riding these pedals for a while now and he seems very pleased which seems like a high bar for him.
100% agreed. I used to be a CB Eggbeater guy (for a loooonng time) until I finally had enough of replacing them every 2 years. Finally switched the shimano XTR pedals 3 years ago and those babies are still going strong even though I beat the sh*t out of them on a regular basis due to where I ride and probably my riding style lol. Would hate to invest even this much money in power meter pedals only to see them break after 2 years or less…
@@ericmagee9054 I'm of the same opinion of XTR. I saw the PeakTorque video, and the engineering seems to promote longevity. Perhaps these new pedals are finally something to try out.
@@MacNeilR I started to watch the video but he was on a cx or gravel bike from what I saw so I turned it off after a min. Is the video worth watching would you say?
@@ericmagee9054 It's the most in depth from a mechanical point of view that I could find so far. He said he used them on his MTB and on his Enduro bike (though pedals are not rated for Enduro) over the year he had them to test. I thought it was worth viewing, but you could skip the last half as that mainly covers the power meter accuracy which we've already seen in DCR's video is great.
This is awesome! I've been using the Assioma Duo Shi for about two years for my road bike and I am very happy with them. I've been wanting to find a similar solution for my gravel bike and this is it.
I know it's not the ideal solution, but I got a couple of usb-c to micro usb adapters that have a secure loop so it travels around with my usb-c cables. Relatively inexpensive from Amazon and work relatively well 🙂
Love my Assiomas. Will be adding these to my collection as soon as I can get my grubby little mitts on them. Heopefully this is a naming system that Favero will be continuing and that with the new spindle technology a Favero Assioma Pro RD is now in the pipeline. I’ve had duos for a couple years and love them. I’m planning to do more gravel this season and have needed an SPD solution. This is what I was hoping for!
Got my dual sided pedals today. They work fine, setup was easy and they seem high quality. They are boxy compared to XTR, definitely going to take some hard hits.
Thanks as always Ray. Read the full report before watching.... I've has the Assioma Duo for several years...long enough to actually have the recharge ability decay 😮. Favero support is amazing. great review (as so many others of yours)!!! just a quick question: how accurate is the MX-1? I don't have any imbalances between legs and I do believe that in XC due to the differences in the terrain , the balance is not an issue because it's natural that someone applies a little bit more power with one of the legs. I do believe that overall value and normalized power is far more important. Therefore, I am inquiring you about the accuracy of the "single model".
One comment on the pedal body (favero 49€ vs garmin 200€) - on Garmin there is a design issue so you can't change the body bearings, and when it starts creacking after 8-10 months, you can rely only on warranty to change the pedals, and after warranty you have to buy bodies...Hope Favero allows to change bearing of bodies - but if it is replacement at least the price is more reasonable...
500 USD is a much more reasonable price point than the absurd 700 USD Garmin is asking for their baseline XC100 which almost no one carries to begin with. From that point alone makes this a very good product release.
Thanks Ray for another great review! Any idea how the accuracy of these would be when using pedal extenders? I have to use 16mm pedal extenders on my gravel bike as I wear a size 16 shoe and my heels rub on the chainstays unless I use the extenders.
Hello Ray! thanks for the video, great content! I am interested in your opinion on having just this pedals for both a gravel and a road bike - on the former I am sure it works I am a bit unsure at length on having SPD for a road bike! thanks for the advise!
I did not even know these charging plugs came off until like 3 years into owning the Assioma Duos. And I’d still be fine them being permanently connected. So the micro-usb is a strategic questionmark, but hardly an operational issue
I disagree. It's cheaper this way for the company and for the consumer. If the cable gets bend, frays, etc, which cheap usb cables tend to do, you can easily replace it for 1 USD. If you had to buy an entire cable with propriety plug, it's going to cost probably 19.99 and you have to bet that Assioma makes the same plug in 4-5 years.
@@KerenWang I think the issue is more with micro usb instead of usb-c. Since almost everything is usb-c nowdays, having to carry around another cable is annoying
Hey folks - I've had these pedals for a couple months and I just cant get the entry / release tension right. They are either too loose, or a click or two of the allen and I cant get in. New (and slightly worn cleats). Tried three pairs of shoes I own. I'm a long term XT / XTR pedal user. Any tips? Everyone loves these pedals; I just cant get them to work. No issues with power data. Thnx in advance. I've opened a ticket with Favero but havent heard back yet.
One thing nobody talked about these is the fact that every pedal I have used ends up with some wear on the spindle at some point. So I would like to know how durable these are since it's the most expensive part of the pedal. Open one up for us
Hey Ray, Two Questions: 1. What’s the Q-Factor? (I actually fit better the Duo-shi with SPD mod) 2. Do we think Duo-shi and Duo will get firmware updates to keep parity feature wise with cycling dynamics?
1. Q-factor is 53mm apparently; i'm in the same boat as you, so that's slightly disappointing (especially as i'm currently looking to change pedal/PM...)
I think it's clear this is their new spindle design going forward. But whether or not that ends up being exactly compatible with a new pair of road bodies remains to be seen (just like how the base Assioma Duo's weren't compatible with the Shimano pedal version).
Very cool. I'm tempted, but how well does that charging port hold up over time? I currently use my rallys for cyclocross, so the pedals would get a lot of abuse, water, sand, thick mud..
We haven't seen any issues using that same port on the road side after I think like 7 years now. So, no real concerns there (and people have been using them conveted to SPD for MTB for at least 3-4 years).
I have been running the old Assimos with Xpedo M-Force 8 SPD pedal bodies since the pandemic in gravel and BC mud. The pods are a bit bashed from pedal strikes but no charging or any other issues. They just work. Even in last year’s Unbound mudfest. 100% support Assimos.
What's your opinion on using the 1 pedal setup, am I missing out huge by not spending 100s more on the 2nd pedal? I'm not in racing shape, I just get motivated by numbers and stats..etc..
I'm assuming the Garmin Rally XC pedals are intended for XC only, as the name suggests. What about the Faveros? Are they limited to XC too or are they suitable enduro and DH too?
Shane actually measured it. It is 11.2 but half of the height, from the center to the pad (spindle radius). Shimano state end-to-end height, spindle diameter (and I measured it). So it would be 22.4 vs 15.1 - XTRs are definitely lower.
Friend, I bought this pedal, the MX-2, I opened the Favero app on my phone, registered it, updated the firmware and recharged the pedal to the maximum. When I go to the live option, it doesn't show any data even when connected. The PCO part shows a red line with the number 0 as soon as I pedal but nothing else changes. Do you know why? What should I do?
So he doesn't want to "have to re-do the planned comparison video right away because something changes" 🤔 What short term change is he hinting towards across the different models he might be comparing? 🔮
a road pedal spindle option? I didnt hear any talk about such comparison with garmin rally (road/mtb) in the video, except for the price of a replacing the pedal spindle. I'm a garmin rally owner and if favero do release this, hopefully it will force garmin to reduce their ridiculously priced pedal spindles from 250 euro down to the 100 (50 each) level of the favero.
I want to know how they will hold up after 3+ years of riding in the southwestern US. Someone in Arizona / Utah please put these through their paces and report back 😂
You wouldn’t. Power is only useful if you are following a “power based” training plan through a coach or something like TrainerRoad. These training programs use power for your training plan and build future workouts based on your power
Got mine yesterday, so excited. Unfortunately not working, connects but reads zero for power. I tried switching to single sided mode and it works fine, so maybe a bad right pedal Anyone else?
Yes, followed the setup wizard 100%, it works when I switch it to single sided, but reads zero in dual sided (I. e. it's connected and reading zero watts, and not that it's not connected and reading nothing at all)
@@AutoxVideoHmm, Assuming crank length is good, you might try putting it into travel mode and back out (use charger to get back out). That’s basically the variant of a full reboot. Otherwise, shoot a note to Favero support, so they can get you sorted first thing in the morning.
@@Dcrainmaker Thanks for the suggestions, still working with support and no real progress. It appears to be either a sick right pedal or some device conflict. Will update with the resolution whenever that is.
Well, if anyone's still reading this - after ~3 weeks of back and forth, the issue seems to be buggy BT. The solution is to use ANT+ **AND** put the pedals into single sided mode even though they are double sided.
You touched on the pedal body changing tool. Is the Spindle compatible with Time ATAC Pedal Bodies? Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. Great content as always.
It’s shame that they are not compatible with Time Pedals as i need to use Time for the lateral float due to on going pain in their connecting tissue of my knees post full knee replacements. Thank you for your prompt reply.
I had a pair of Assiomas in the past and I've had a bunch of power meters berfore and since. The thing they all share is that sooner or later you will have issues with them, and there are big differences in how these companies deal with them. My Assiomas had an issue from day one and it took me five months to convince them to replace it, while I got a replacement set in two days after I called Garmin because my Rally pedals never came back alive after it prompted me to replace the batteries. I really want to like these new mtb pedals, I just don't trust the company. I would give it another try if they had a North American distributor for sure.
Yeah, I asked support like 3 years ago if they'd ever sell a USB-C version of the charger for my Duos (and got pretty much the same non-answer about maybe one day). Obviously their CS team cant comment on anything new so I didn't expect much differently then... but I'm sad to see that they are still using microUSB.
@@quincywalker4441Yup, I'm pretty sure we all have 15 micro usb's lying around, so I don't mind it. It's not as fast, but for a small pedal battery it doesn't matter
@@sgriff5692 so my top scenario that this is an issue is travel. To travel with the assiomas you need to put them into travel mode or else the accelerometer keeps them on the whole time. And then the only way to turn them back on is to plug them into power. And these pedals are literally my only device on microUSB, so I'm needing to make sure I have separate additional cables just for the pedals, and a specific charger with a USB-A output. If it was usb-C I could get rid of another charger and just keep the magnetic things in my bag.

So he doesn't want to "have to re-do the planned comparison video right away because something changes" 🤔
What short term change is he hinting towards across the different models he might be comparing? 🔮
Probably another pedal release
a road pedal spindle option? I didnt hear any talk about such comparison with garmin rally (road/mtb) in the video, except for the price of a replacing the pedal spindle. I'm a garmin rally owner and if favero do release this, hopefully it will force garmin to reduce their ridiculously priced pedal spindles from 250 euro down to the 100 (50 each) level of the favero.
At least in their shop EUR price way over 700 EUR... out of stock for 2 months.
Their shop lists the dual sided ones as just under 614 Euros AFAICS, but that is an ex-VAT / duties price.
still waiting for time shell based power meters ;(((
I want to know how they will hold up after 3+ years of riding in the southwestern US. Someone in Arizona / Utah please put these through their paces and report back 😂
Do they connect with Apple Watch ? Thank you
Yup, no problem! And something I tested too.
Honest question: as a recreational cyclist, why would I want a power meter?
You wouldn’t. Power is only useful if you are following a “power based” training plan through a coach or something like TrainerRoad. These training programs use power for your training plan and build future workouts based on your power
Got mine yesterday, so excited. Unfortunately not working, connects but reads zero for power. I tried switching to single sided mode and it works fine, so maybe a bad right pedal Anyone else?
Did you activate it in the app? Else, no power.
What happens below -10 C?
They start on fire😢
Micro USB is really weird…
Did they have this ready in the drawer and then slept on this design for 4 or 5 years?
You touched on the pedal body changing tool. Is the Spindle compatible with Time ATAC Pedal Bodies? Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. Great content as always.
No, just these bodies.
It’s shame that they are not compatible with Time Pedals as i need to use Time for the lateral float due to on going pain in their connecting tissue of my knees post full knee replacements. Thank you for your prompt reply.
120kg weight limit 😞
Anyone want to buy some 3 month old, slightly used Garmin Rally XC200?
I bought mine last month😂
Ha ha. I love the hint..
Busy day on RUclips I reckon you today 😉
On back order :/
Who wants to bet on new Garmin pedals?
Looks interesting, but the micro-USB is a deal breaker for me, I have to wait for the USB-C version.
You were too excited about these pedal, they are sold out. 🙁
Crank Brothers brothers getting nothing is sad
Right. Towards MTB, there's a huge percentage of riders on CB
out of stock now. sad
@5:35 Dude. GET A TORQUE WRENCH.
Not available for 2 months at least... not interested in another cycling shortage of product.
Man, the micro-USB thing really kills it for me :-/
Why?
Yeah, I asked support like 3 years ago if they'd ever sell a USB-C version of the charger for my Duos (and got pretty much the same non-answer about maybe one day). Obviously their CS team cant comment on anything new so I didn't expect much differently then... but I'm sad to see that they are still using microUSB.
I’d rather have micro than proprietary
If it was usb-C I could get rid of another charger and just keep the magnetic things in my bag.
micro usb in 2024...
