- Crashed BMW E39 M5 First Drive: The Supercharged S62 RIPS!
We finally got a chance to take the crashed Supercharged M5 out for a drive and see what the drive train was like.
We still aren't sure which way to go with the build. But making sure the S62, 6 speed manual and diff all work as they should was really important to what happens next.

I own one of these. I’ve been running it for 12 years. I have modified every single thing you can, with the car. Everything sounds normal. Until the trans is fully warmed up, 1st is always notchy. Just go to second and then it will drop right into first. If you’re driving around for 20 minutes, it will go away.
I love y'all. By far my favorite car of all time an theres not too much good content on these modded performance wise. Also have a E90 N54 so this channel is 🔥🔥 to me. Keep it up.
Thanks for checking us out. We’ll definitely sharing everything we do on our own cars. This M5 is just wild. But we’re already looking for ideas to improve the engine once the crash damage is fixed. Would love to get some E85 running through it and make some charge cooling. Gonna be an interesting build.

Sounds fantastic! I just saw a Evolve tuned Supercharged E39 M5 which has about 530bhp on 4 psi boost and about 630bhp on 8 psi and its ferocious! 😍

Thanks man!! We’re loving being able to play such a beast. This one should have some room for improvement. The evolve supercharger kits seem a bit better designed than the ess. Might have steal some of imrans ideas and blend them in to this! He seems to be an avid e39 M5 collector at the moment. We’re so stoked with the subs, thanks for helping us get there!!! Yeeowww

He’s clearly a BMW head! If you can let him know we exist that would be awesome. Any supercharged e39 knowledge he can share would be awesome. Actually one of our mates has an evolved tuned e60 m5 which is a monster and once this e39 is sorted we want to start tuning our e60 as well 👌

Absolutely worth the wait! Especially those bonnet-off shots. Excellent buy guys! Not the cleanest M5 (considering it's been on it's roof before) but that just gives it all the more character.. clearly it doesn't want to die after being written off twice and going more than 300k kms, so I stick with my comment on the previous video: pull her straight, give her some love and save her! Looking forward to the next video.

Awesome! Love the supergharger. I have a e39 M5 that I am modifying. I have done a slick top conversion and taken 350 lbs out of it.

Awesome dude. Its a but of a bizarre concept trying to get weight out of the big luxury cars, but it makes such a major difference to the driving experience. Have you done many mods to the s62 yet?

Zero To 60 well mine isn’t as crazy as yours! Lol ☝️but I can manage to do 4.8 0-60 and 12.8 in a quarter mile! I don’t have cats, and mufflers, K&N filters and mild tune on my car.... very interested about getting a compressor for my car and a set of proper headers !
I wouldn't run my '02 on anything but 10-60. The engine's oil system was designed around it and at close to $10k usd, I don't want to replace it if I don't have to.
Looking forward to following how this evolves, looks and sounds like an absolute weapon! Don’t overlook the fact that the supercharger increases load on bearings so I wouldn’t think you would want to drop the oil viscosity any lower than what’s needed on a standard engine.
That's a very good point. We are also looking forward to getting something sorted out. Whether its in this chassis or another one, the drivetrain package is freaking awesome.
My old E39 M5 box used to be very stiff until it had been driving around 20 minutes then it was great. Some say using ATF in the 6 speed BMW boxes works wonders but never tried it myself.

Officially the pfl E39 M5 needs 10W60 due to high oil consumption and the facelift model was 5W40 Wintershall back then in Europe. Nowadays it's common (and best) to use Castrol 10W60 on all non turbo M cars. Did it for years with great result, just make sure you take it easy when they are cold. :D

Personally in manual BMW's, ive felt 1st is always a bit hard to get into but should loosen up when it warms up after a bit of driving and shifting. Ive also driven a 1 series bmw before and after it had a new synchromesh for 1st fitted and this helped heaps.
Check the drive shaft mount & trans mounts, even motor mounts! Remove I think it’s called Cv pivot in trans for smooth shifts. I have a supercharged 540 sport with m5 dif

Hardest thing about fixing this is with the rear wheel,if can straighten it,is subframe bent or chassis rail bent??

Go liquimoly 10w-60. Yeah they don’t like going back into 1st, that’s normal. The supercharger sounds sick! It’s a complete beast. I’m thinking of SCing mine.
Really need to replace that wand of a gear lever! I've a E60 540i manual gear lever with all the bushes replaced and ZHP gear knob, OE short shift!👍 Sweet car though guys!🤙

What comes to oil use 10w60. There was a forum post where somebody went through bmw dealer and managed to contact bmw germany and their engineers. And apparently s62 was designed to only use 10w60. 5w30 that is "recommended" for facelift cars is all to do with marketing as these cars consume some oil and 5w30 is more available and also what every other bmw uses. Again, bmw engineers recommend only 10w60 for s62.
Rod bearing issue on these is overblown but should be changed on high mileage cars. Mine had 300k km when I got it. Bearings were down 1-2 layers, but not yet showing copper so did them just in time. Upper halves were all pristine.
With aftermarket flywheel and clutch will easily spin tires in second gear unintentionally on damp roads. Stock dualmass flywheel has some give so will not murder tires as fast.
Ps. If you are still not sure what to do with the car, my dream build would be s62 (well actually if budget not issue then s85) in e31 chassis. Just an idea :)

Killing me guys. A couple came up in Perth last week 😱. Regarding the gear box, on mine i change oils 3 times before I was happy, went with a blend from memory. Box takes ages to warm up and is sticky when cold. Cheers.

Zero To 60 if you go to the UUCMotorwerks website. Look at the lightweight flywheel sentient , in the technological reading section, click on how to reduce gear rattle . There is an article in gearbox oil. Cheers

Thought to use the best 5W-40 synthetic DIESEL oil until you confirm the engine serviceability? (I am old, this was a good advice for many years in my racing engines). Diesels have turbo's and high compressions/big loads on the engine bearings, so should be really safe for this engine if you do not want to use the OEM oil. I am an X5 guy myself.
The gear box in these things is the same as the box in the E46 m3. My supercharged s54 has the same notchy hard to get into 1st and 2nd. The 420G is like that especially when cold.
On the oil front, synthetic 10w60. You don't need TWS or the Castrol supercar 10w60, any quality synthetic of that weight will do the job.
On the fueling front when you get it straight, i recommend dragging it up the highway to Simply Tuning at Brendale. Let Dan tidy up the tune, he's fiddled with the majority of the ESS fitted M cars in Brisbane and will find the missing KW's.
My s54 went from 370HP at the rollers to 420's
Thanks for the info dude. Awesome to hear what Dan at simply can do with these ESS kits, its not slow, but its not what we were expected for a boosted 5l engine, definitely room for improvement. We wanted to get our N54 car in to him sooner or later as well. But getting a slot in his workshop is getting a bit difficult he's always so busy!

nearly, car still needs a little bit of correction work.
1st and 2nd on mine always feel tight to get in when cold but loosens up fine after driving a few miles. Just ticked over 100k so perhaps not uncommon for these.
That could be it. I think drive was just over 20 mins long so it might just need a bit more use after sitting for 4 months incase the synchros are glazed or something.
Same thing at 135k with everything new in shift linkage. It is tight 1st and 2nd. Just needs awhile to warm up.

This car looks like its Avus blue? or is it another colour? On camera it looks absolutely beautiful. I think this car with stock seats and the funky after market dials relocated to like the glove box or something could end up looking really really good. Looks a bit ricer with those seats and dials hacked into the dash like that. Looking forward to see what you guys do with this.
It's actually carbon black. Which is a really really dark blue. The car is at the panel shop still, but hopefully be all fixed and back on the road in the next 2 weeks.

E39 is the greatest car of all time. Even the non m versions. Had 490,000km on mine when I sold it, it just kept going and going
BMW recommends Castrol TWS 10w60 for these. Damn expensive stuff too.
Yeah!!! It’s anoying how they do that with thier m cars. Most Aussie oils companies have a equivalent oil. I spoke to Castrol on the phone and they actually said the tws is so old you’re better off using their new 10w60. But everyone’s aftermarket oil listings seem out of whack for the e39.
@@ZeroTo60Tube The facelifts 01-03 uses 0w-30 according to BMW, but I'll run 10w-60 in mine anyway, Castrol Edge Supercar to be exact, many run Liqui-Moly 10-60 and swears by it aswell. 5w50 will work fine too. Put the drivetrain in a touring, that would be awesome, an SE-looking beige 523i-badged one would be a killer sleeper with that blown S62 in it :D Great content guys. New subscriber here. How much bhp will this be pushing now?
"Evolve Automotive" have been superchargering M5's for awhile now but using the rotrex charger, they claim got two M5's with 530 bhp & 630 bhp,does that sound right with totally stock engine's?
Evolve wouldn't fudge any numbers so i am sure its legit, but they also tune for drive-ability, not just shoot for dyno queen figures. Their kits do seem to have a better way of cooling the charged air (the ess kit has nothing). Wouldn't mind seeing if they have any tips to improve this system to be honest.
I drive the evolve-setup. Mine runs with 594HP on 98 octane gas. over 600 with 102 possible without any problems.
Obviously a big displacement engine, but wasn't the engine moving a fair bit under load? Wonder if those engine mounts need to be looked at.
The super wide GoPro angle definitely didn’t help plus that was the SC which is probably the furthest thing away from the mounts. In person it doesnt look like it moves much at all but will definitely double check them on the hoist

Castrol Edge 10w60 oil all day long. Not worth using a cheap oil. When gearbox is cold can be difficult to get into first
Thanks for the info and a few people have said the same thing, this was the first drive the car has had in months and it would have been about 20 mins long, so maybe that first gear would free up a little.
Maybe it smells badly of fuel bc the manifold is leaking as well?

Without intercooler you will have big power loss after some pulls with that setup. This car needs an intercooler if the power should be there at any time.
I agree. Any ideas on how to set one up on the ess supercharger setup?
@@ZeroTo60Tube As I remember ESS offered the stage 2 setup of this kit with an intercooler several years ago. Maybe they can help you. Problem with the ESS kit is, after 2-3 pulls you will have stock power ;). That was the reason i switched to the evolve kit and my m5 goes now to 594 HP on the dyno with 98octane gas. Power always there even on higher temperatures. But nice car you got there anyway!

One top, remove the supercharger, it's not that great after all and the S62 likes being atmo. Use the money to fix the car to it's most original state, it will be worth more. :D
Jerain you are 100% correct. That would definitely net the most valuable car and the most money left in our pocket. But is that the most fun to be had?
@@ZeroTo60Tube I had an ESS supercharger on my E92 M3, while it was faster it didnt suit the car well. For example with drifting the revs would climb too fast and artificially...
Don't take it off man after all that was your main reason to even spend that money
